Juddmonte International Stakes tips, odds racecard & trends 2026: Clash of the season awaits at York

Racing fans are all set for a potential “race of the season clash” in the Group 1 Juddmonte International Stakes on Wednesday at York. The Ebor meeting kicks off in style on day one as Ombudsman and Constitution River have both been declared.

GG tipster Joe Napier previews the opening day highlight, analysing the runners and giving his verdict.

2026 Juddmonte International Stakes Runners

The anticipated clash between Constitution River and Ombudsman goes ahead. Aidan O’Brien sends his star three-year-old into battle on an unbeaten streak of five, his only defeat coming by a short-head on debut. His French Derby and Eclipse wins have been consummately professional, but both races were run ideally to suit. Neither represents the highest class of form.

Conversely, Ombudsman now has four Group 1s. All of those have been achieved by at least two-length margins. Over 1m2f, he is one of the best performers of a generation, capable of sustaining gallops or punishing rivals with his turn-of-foot. Barring trouble in running, or a messy race, he should win at the top level again here. With at least two pacemakers running, this should be run to aid his possible best.

Last year’s race appeared to boil down to the top two in a field of just six. However, seven more runners make for a more intriguing 2026 renewal. Item is certainly no back number, with two wins over course and distance already this term. His win in the Group 2 York Stakes last time out, beating another track and trip specialist in Pride Of Arras, was particularly striking. He races on 1lb better terms with his elders here due to the removal of his Group 2 penalty, while Pride Of Arras can again prove a useful yardstick on his favoured course.

Almaqam won the Group 1 Tattersalls Gold Cup earlier this season, but it now seems evident that he is below that class against genuine top level opposition. Zaydann is yet to step up to that tier though, but his unbeaten run is noteworthy and his form in 2026 suggests he i ready to step up.

Hawk Mountain is below Constitution River’s class, but proved useful Ballydoyle backup. Action does likewise from a pacemaking perspective, though he and Devil’s Advocate do not look the types to split the field. Ultimately, their presence should only help Ombudsman’s chances.

Awaiting racecard…

Weekend Watch tipster Dave Young has run the stats already for the Juddmonte International Stakes, and had produced the following trends which could be key to finding the winner.

2026 Juddmonte International Stakes Tips

Given Ombudsman beat a top-notch three-year-old in Delacroix to this race last year, Constitution River will have to be something special to beat him. The Godolphin runner was imperious again at Royal Ascot and may be better than ever. Constitution River has the potential to go closest to him, but his form does not convince and there are appealing each-way options for the frame in Item, Pride Of Arras and Zaydann.

  1. Ombudsman
  2. Item
  3. Zaydann
