July Cup Tips, Odds, Racecard & Trends 2026: Royal Ascot hero to reign again at Newmarket

Eleven sprinters will go to post for the Group 1 July Cup at Newmarket on Saturday 11th July at 4.35pm. We may not have a bumper field for the 6f showpiece, but it’s a who’s who of top class sprinters in what is one of the races of the season.

Steve Chambers previews the contest and looks at the latest odds, runners, trends and picks out his 1-2-3 for the event.

2026 July Cup Runners

Karl Burke’s Venetian Sun was a superb winner of the Commonwealth Cup and the top-notch three-year-old sprinter will look to follow up here. Having found a mile too far in the 2000 Guineas, he dropped back to six furlongs with sparkling wins in the Sandy Lane Stakes and Commonwealth Cup. Mission Central is another from the Classic generation looking to shine and he showed a sparkling late turn of foot to land the King Charles III Stakes at Royal Ascot. That was over five furlongs, but Aidan O’Brien’s charge shaped like he could well excel over six.

Almeraq fended off Satono Reve to land the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot, which is the Group 1 over 6f for older horses. That pair take their chance here and are both top class sprinters. However, they need to give weight away to their younger rivals here in what is an intriguing meeting of the ages.

Double Rush is another with Royal Ascot winning form, but that came in handicap company in the Wokingham Stakes. Hugely progressive, he will now step into Pattern company and has to continue on an upward curve. Third in the Commonwealth Cup, Division will look to turn the form around with Venetian Sun, whilst Big Mojo and Commanche Brave add more depth to the race.

1 (4)
Almeraq uniform
Form: 21F-11 D
OR: 119
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Progressive colt who got up on the line in a very tight finish to the 6f Group 1 at Royal Ascot (good to firm) most recently, taking record in completed starts to 4-6 and confirming that a heavy fall last September has not left a long-lasting mark; an emerging force in the sprinting division and he’s from the family of a July Cup winner (Dream Ahead); major contender.
Form: 510-78 D
OR: 115
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Respectable eighth in the 5f Group 1 at Royal Ascot with reappearance under his belt; better over 6f nowadays and posted one of his peak efforts in this race (good to firm) last year, finishing a neck second; later landed the Sprint Cup at Haydock in sole start under William Buick; interesting with that rider back on board.
Form: -33517 D
OR: 113
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Prevailed at the Curragh in May to break his Group 2 duck; not disgraced in the 6f Group 1 at Royal Ascot since but that seventh-place finish confirms his slight limitations at the top level; will find better opportunities when back down in class.
Form: 20-111 D
OR: 110
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Smart handicapper who brings excellent stats, being 3-3 at Newmarket (on the other course, admittedly, but it bodes well) and 3-3 (much improved) this term for new yard; prevailed only narrowly in the Wokingham at Royal Ascot (good to firm) most recently but seems on his way to becoming a Group performer; adds great interest.
Form: 8-5024 CD
OR: 102
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Joint-favourite with Almeraq in Salisbury Listed race last time but underperformed; bottom of this pack on ratings and accordingly faces a much stiffer assignment than when winning a handicap at this meeting last year; blinkers added.
Form: -21360 CD
OR: 109
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 6 yo Gelding
Multiple winner, most recently when sent over to Qatar in February, but his form has regressed since and this is a difficult task even if a revival materialises; gained his C&D wins at handicap/Listed level; yet to score above Group 3.
OUR TIP
Form: 49-122 D
OR: 119
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 7 yo Horse
Japanese horse who is a two-time Grade 1 scorer on home soil and has finished a creditable second in the last two runnings of the 6f Group 1 at Royal Ascot, beaten only a nose by Almeraq the latest time; could go one better at Newmarket, as was the case with compatriot Agnes World who was runner-up at Royal Ascot prior to winning this contest in 2000.
8 (6)
Coppull uniform
Form: 153-18 D
OR: 110
W: 9st 2lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
Very useful 3yo but finished only eighth, albeit best of the near-side runners, in the Commonwealth Cup for 3yos at Royal Ascot when bidding to follow up his trial success over the same C&D; bare form of the latest effort gives him work to do with Venetian Sun and Division; furthermore, it took his Group 1 record to 0-3.
9 (1)
Division uniform
Form: 15-323 D
OR: 113
W: 9st 2lb
Age: 3 yo Colt
Solid performer who completed a hat-trick during his 2yo campaign and has strong placed form this season, the last two times behind Venetian Sun; finished well for close third in the Commonwealth Cup latest; has broadly progressive RPRs in tandem with a gradual rise in class; knocking on the door at Group level.
Form: 10-111 D
OR: 115
W: 9st 2lb
Age: 3 yo Gelding
Progressive 3yo gelding who brings impressive stats, being 3-3 (all over 5f against his elders) this term and 3-3 over 6f; finished strongly to get up in the final strides in the 5f Group 1 at Royal Ascot (good to firm) most recently; all bar one of his trainer’s five July Cup winners have been 3yos; big player back up in distance.
Form: 13-011 CD
OR: 115
W: 8st 13lb
Age: 3 yo Filly
3yo filly who is unbeaten (6-6) over sprint trips, mostly in Group races, including two at the top level; only narrowly justified favouritism in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot (good to firm) most recently but it’s hard to knock her record and there may yet be further advancement in terms of her rating; sire won the July Cup; receives all the allowances and duly warrants respect.

Betting Forecast

9/2 Almeraq, 10/1 Big Mojo, 20/1 Comanche Brave, 9/1 Double Rush, 66/1 Prince Of India, 33/1 Quinault, 9/2 Satono Reve, 25/1 Coppull, 8/1 Division, 9/2 Mission Central, 11/4 Venetian Sun

Verdict

The form of several tight finishes at Royal Ascot largely dominates calculations in an open-looking July Cup and an intriguing clash of generations that has several plausible outcomes. Japanese raider SATONO REVE is the oldest contender but he retains full ability aged seven and this switch to Newmarket may enable him to reverse Jubilee placings with Almeraq, who nevertheless commands respect assuming the cards again drop perfectly. Talented filly Venetian Sun has a good chance and remains unbeaten over sprint trips, while Division (second choice) is showing signs that he could turn the tables with that rival in another rematch and Mission Central is another big player among the 3yos.[Steve Boow]

2026 July Cup Tips

It’s a real battle between the three-year-olds and the older horses in this year’s July Cup. And it can be the younger generation that sparkle. Venetian Sun is the proven class over six, but Mission Central stormed home to win over five furlongs at Ascot, and with Ryan Moore sure to unleash his challenge late on then he can bound clear in the closing stages. Double Rush is on the upgrade and is another class act, who can pick up third.
