The finals of the Go North series occur at Kelso on Saturday. The first four races there are broadcast live in a bumper-nine-race edition of ITV Racing.
GG tipster Joe Napier picks out two best bets at the Scottish track as part of our Saturday lucky 15 tips. He also has two selections at Newbury for you to follow.
Kelso Racing Tips (Saturday 21 March)
The “Go North” series finals occur at Kelso on Saturday. With competitive racing guaranteed, our two best bets come in the opening two contests.
1.00 Kelso – Tankardstown Diva (1pt win – 11/1)
Although she is well below some of her rivals on ratings, Tankardstown Diva has been winning impressively of late. Tom Ellis’ charge has now won her last four hurdles starts, being beaten twice in between those over fences. The grey has gone up 21lb in the handicap for those wins, with her most impressive to date coming last time out at Ludlow on ground tackier than the official good-to-soft. This quicker surface could be even more to her liking and this confirmed stayer is a player.
1.30 Kelso – Brookside La (1pt win – 9/2)
Judicial Deference had Brookside La’s measure nine weeks ago, but the Skelton horse can reverse that form. There were four lengths between them at Haydock, but a 9lb swing now goes in favour of the selection. Judicial Deference has won again since, but that was on heavy here over 2m6f. Brookside La has now been freshened up and should have plenty more to offer in handicaps. The six-year-old went off favourite in a bumper against El Cairos last season, so is surely held in greater regard. He himself is up 3lb from his last run, but that might not stop him in a race lacking depth.
Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 21 March)
A Grade 2 mares’ novices’ handicap headlines the jumps action at Newbury on Saturday. In that race and one other come our two lucky 15 tips on the card.
1.50 Newbury – Grand Vendetta (1pt win -11/2)
Paul Nicholls has enjoyed a mini winning spree since the Cheltenham Festival. Another winner could be on the cards with Grand Vendetta. The son of Flemensfirth is his dam’s first male offspring, though a few of his half-siblings have been talented. Grand Vendetta himself was a respectable second on debut at Chepstow, then beat a 124-rated rival at Taunton. That runner-up carried a 7lb penalty in that novice event. However, he is probably better than that rating, giving hope that the selection can prove ahead of a mark of 120 here.
3.00 Newbury – Charisma Cat (1pt win – 15/2)
Five of these ran in a novices’ hurdle behind Khrisma at Market Rasen last month. It is the runner-up that day, Charisma Cat, who is taken to come out on top despite top-weight. She is only worse off at the weights with Watamu in terms of that performance. However, with Emma Lavelle’s mare an uncertain stayer, Alan King’s Listed bumper winner is preferred. Her second in that company on hurdling debut was promising before a shock 1/6 reverse at Wincanton. However, she has left that form behind, improving for better company as she did in bumpers. That can be the case again here, as her best should be beyond a mark of 124.
