Kempton & Southwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Monday 2 February

Kempton & Southwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Monday 2 February

The rearranged Dublin Racing Festival card ensures there is must-watch racing action throughout Monday. There are also decent jumps cards on home shores at Kempton and Southwell too.

It is to those English venues that Andrew Mount heads for his two best bets for Monday, with one each at the jumps cards at Kempton and Southwell during the afternoon.

Kempton Racing Tips (Monday 2 February 2026)

Kempton’s class 3 0-140 handicap chase is likely the standout contest on the seven-race card, but Andrew turns to the novices’ handicap, race two at the meeting, for his best bet at the track.

1.27 Kempton – I Play County (1pt win – 14/1 generally)

The Toby Lawes-trained I Play County signed off last season with victory in a maiden hurdle at Southwell and was strong in the market ahead of his belated comeback outing in a 2m3f handicap hurdle at Fontwell earlier this month. However, the seven-year-old, who had also undergone wind surgery since his latest effort, looked ill at ease in the very soft ground and never got into contention under a patient ride, eventually pulling up after three out. His trainer is three from 16 (+£29.90) with runners on their second start following a wind operation and the gelding, winner of his sole point-to-point start, could be worth another chance now stepped up in trip to 3m on his Rules chase debut.

Southwell Racing Tips (Monday 2 February 2026)

Southwell’s card also hosts seven races, as Andrew waits until the concluding contest for his top tip.

4.27 Southwell – La Higuera (1pt win – 7-4 bet365, William Hill)

La Higuera broke his duck at Wetherby 11 days ago, earning am impressive sectional times upgrade. Toby Lawes seven-year-old only won by ahead but he raced closer to the strong early pace than ideal (“in touch with leaders, headway and pressed leaders before three out”) whereas the runner-up, third and fourth were described as “in rear”, “towards rear” and “towards rear”. He did have the benefit of the stands’ rail in the straight, but it was still a noteworthy performance. His record since fitted with cheekpieces reads 3231 (1-4) and he looks the only pace in this 3m handicap hurdle. Main market rival Check The Score recorded a useful time when scoring in first-time cheekpieces at Market Rasen on his latest assignment but that was over fences and today’s softer going might not be ideal.
