13:22 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m 2f | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This looks a fairly informative fillies’ maiden rather than a weak early-season guessing game. Eretria sets the standard on what we’ve seen, her debut second earning a lofty 95 rating and making her the obvious one they all have to beat. Knowinmeknowinyou also brings solid substance after shaping well in third on her only start, while the market says plenty about unraced types Pink Coral and Sangreal. Aidan O’Brien runs three, which always adds intrigue, but it may be Donnacha O’Brien who holds the strongest hand with the filly who has already shown she handles the job. Over this 1m2f on yielding ground, tactical pace and stamina matter, and that experience could prove a real edge.

Top Selections

1. Eretria – 13/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Ryan | Trainer: Donnacha Aidan O’Brien | Form: 2 | Rating: 95 | Topspeed:

Eretria is the clear form pick and, frankly, she’s hard to oppose. That debut second already leaves most of these with something to find, and a 95 rating in this company is a serious marker for a filly having only her second start. She shaped like one who would improve for the experience and today’s extra yardage should suit rather than stretch her. Gavin Ryan is a positive booking and Donnacha O’Brien’s fillies usually know their job after a first run. At 13/8 she is not a giveaway, but she looks the one most likely to run her race and set a proper standard. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Knowinmeknowinyou – 9/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 3- | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 75

Knowinmeknowinyou makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where a few of the sexier names are still trading on reputation. Her debut third was a good, honest effort, and the combination of an 83 rating and 75 Topspeed says there is proper substance to it. She should be sharper for that initial outing, and Joseph O’Brien is more than capable of bringing one forward from two to three. The step up to 1m2f looks likely to help, not hinder, and she has enough proven ability to make 9/2 look a fair price for place purposes at the very least. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Eretria is the straightforward win play because she brings the standout piece of form and already looks up to winning an ordinary maiden. Knowinmeknowinyou is the sensible each-way punt at the prices, with proven ability and likely improvement on her side. The obvious dangers are Pink Coral and Sangreal, two unexposed fillies from major yards who would not need to be stars to get involved.

13:57 – Student Style Awards (C & G) Maiden

Race Details: 1m 2f | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This looks a fair maiden rather than an especially deep one, and the market has probably narrowed it down correctly. Asakir sets the standard on bare figures after a promising debut third, while Cannes brings the strongest piece of racecourse form in terms of finishing position after ending last season with a second. Between them, they bring substance to a race where plenty are either lightly raced or completely unraced. Biennale is the interesting unknown from Ballydoyle, and Antigua could step forward now tackling this trip after two educational runs. The rest need to find chunks of improvement, so it should come down to which of the principals progresses most from two to three. In truth, it’s not bombproof, but it doesn’t look impossible to solve either.

Top Selections

1. Asakir – 11/10 with Betfair

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 3 | Rating: 98 | Topspeed: 34

Asakir is the one I want on side. A debut third is often the right starting point in this sort of Leopardstown maiden, and that 98 rating gives him a clear edge on what has been achieved so far. He’s entitled to come on plenty for the experience, and the move up to 1m2f on yielding ground should suit a colt who already shaped as though he’d appreciate a proper test. J P Murtagh’s runners usually know their job second time up, and Ben Coen is a notable booking in that regard. At around 11/10, he’s not a gift, but he is the most solid option in a race full of guesswork. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Biennale – 8/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Cleary | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

Biennale makes obvious each-way appeal purely on connections and market strength. Aidan O’Brien doesn’t need much introduction in these maidens, and when one of his unraced colts is towards the front of the betting in a race lacking depth beyond the top two in the market, I tend to take the hint. Drawn widest in 11 isn’t ideal, but over this trip at Leopardstown that is no disaster if he breaks cleanly and finds a position. He doesn’t need to be a world-beater to hit the frame, and 8/1 looks a perfectly workable price for a newcomer from a yard that places them aggressively when they show something at home. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Asakir is the win bet and looks the most likely improver off established form. For an each-way punt, Biennale makes most appeal as the unexposed alternative from a powerhouse yard at a backable price. Cannes is the obvious danger if building on his runner-up effort, while Antigua is the one at a bigger number who could step forward for the extra furlong.

14:32 – “Domin OH HOO HOO” Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This is a proper Leopardstown handicap rather than a giveaway, with plenty arriving from different angles and not much between the principals on bare ratings. Diego El Queso sets a solid standard after a good return, Abbey Actress looks the obvious unexposed danger after shaping well from a layoff, while Diamond Exchange is another 4yo who could still have more to give despite a rise for winning. Switch From Diesel is the interesting wildcard after scoring on his only start, though this is a much deeper race and he lacks match practice. Lower down, Mr Rango and Quatre Bras have the sort of profiles that can get involved if things fall right. Tricky enough, then, but not impossible: I’d rather side with recent, reliable form than guesswork.

Top Selections

1. Diego El Queso – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: G M Lyons | Form: 1283-2 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 86

He makes plenty of appeal on his return second, which looked exactly the sort of run that sets one up for a race like this. That form line reads well in the context of this field and, for all he has to concede weight to some younger legs lower down, he comes here as one of the few with solid recent evidence that he’s ready to strike. Colin Keane aboard for a Lyons runner at Leopardstown is never a detail to ignore either. At 5/2 he is not being missed, but he still looks the percentage call in a race full of ifs and buts. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Abbey Actress – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Ben Coen | Trainer: J P Murtagh | Form: 14/1-3 | Rating: 89 | Topspeed: 85

She is the one I’d want on side each-way because there could easily be more to come after so little racing. That comeback third was a promising effort after an absence and suggested she retains ability, while her mark of 89 does not look harsh if she can build on it. Ben Coen knows exactly how to deliver one late around here and this trip on yielding ground should hold no fears on what she has shown. The slight issue is price, because 11/4 is hardly a classic each-way giveaway, but in a 14-runner race with four places she still makes plenty of appeal as a solid place contender with upside.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Diego El Queso is the straight win play because he brings the most convincing recent form and looks poised to go one better. Abbey Actress is the each-way alternative in a race where four places offer some protection, especially for an unexposed mare likely to improve for her comeback. The main danger is Diamond Exchange, who is progressive enough to defy a rise if backing up that latest win.

15:07 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Heritage Stakes (Listed Race)

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This looks a proper spring mile rather than a soft Listed prize, with a short-priced class act in The Lion In Winter meeting battle-hardened older horses like Mutasarref and Jancis. Aidan O’Brien also throws in Expanded and Mississippi River, so the Ballydoyle hand is strong, but the market has made its mind up about the supposed number one. The obvious question is whether The Lion In Winter is simply too good on ratings, or whether race fitness and Leopardstown know-how can bring him back to the field. Tokenomics arrives in form, Ribee is progressing, and Jancis gets a handy pull at the weights. It is a strong race at the top end, though not without an each-way angle against the favourite.

Top Selections

1. The Lion In Winter – 11/8 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Wayne Lordan | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: 03230- | Rating: 125 | Topspeed: 110

He is the standout on the figures and, frankly, the one they all have to beat. A mark of 125 puts him clear of this field, and that 110 topspeed figure backs up the impression that he has been keeping much stronger company than most of these. The draw in 12 is not ideal over this mile, but sheer class can paper over plenty of cracks, especially for a yard that habitually has them ready for these early-season pattern races. At 11/8 with Paddy Power, he is no giveaway, but he is also very hard to oppose if returning anywhere near his best. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Jancis – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: W J Lee | Trainer: W McCreery | Form: 55462- | Rating: 119 | Topspeed: 109

If you want the each-way play, she makes plenty of appeal. Jancis is a solid mare at this level, her 119 rating leaves her with very little to find on raw ability, and that 109 topspeed figure says she can operate in a truly-run mile. The inside draw is another plus around here, and W J Lee is exactly the sort you want on a hold-up filly who needs things to fall right late. She does not have the glamour of the favourite, but 10/1 with Paddy Power looks fair in a 12-runner race with three places on offer. She can easily outrun those odds. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

The straight win play is The Lion In Winter, whose class edge is obvious and probably decisive if he is ready to roll. For a bit of value, Jancis is the each-way punt from a good draw with the right rating profile. The main dangers are Mutasarref, who brings rock-solid older-horse form, and Expanded, who could improve for this company.

15:42 – Irish Stallion Farms EBF Median Auction Fillies Maiden

Race Details: 1m | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This looks a fairly typical Leopardstown fillies’ maiden where the market should tell plenty, but there is already a solid enough form peg in the shape of Mixed Feelings. Joseph O’Brien’s filly sets the standard on her debut third and her mark of 82 is the standout established figure in the field. Bang Bang is the obvious danger among those with racecourse experience after two respectable runs last season, while newcomers like Moon Aura, Lake Bonney and Miss Romagna add intrigue from powerful enough yards. The yielding ground should put the emphasis on professionalism as much as speed, and that is why this may not take a world-beater to win. It is a maiden with depth, but not one overflowing with stars.

Top Selections

1. Mixed Feelings – 11/10 with Bet365

Jockey: J M Sheridan | Trainer: Joseph Patrick O’Brien | Form: 3- | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 64

She is hard to oppose on what we have actually seen on the track. That debut third reads well in the context of this race, and an opening mark of 82 makes her the one they all have to get past. There should be improvement to come from that first run, especially now stepping into a 1m maiden that ought to suit on breeding and profile. Joseph O’Brien’s fillies are usually well schooled, and J M Sheridan knows the job here is probably to keep it simple and let class tell late on. At 11/10 she is no secret, but she still looks the most likely winner rather than a favourite to take on. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Moon Aura – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Shane Foley | Trainer: Mrs John Harrington | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:

In a race where several of the exposed fillies have already shown their level, Moon Aura appeals as the each-way alternative with a bit more upside. Harrington does well with this type and Shane Foley is a notable booking in what looks a deliberate starting point over a sensible trip. The market has her prominent at around 6/1, which suggests she is expected to know her job first time, and this does not look an especially deep maiden beyond the favourite. With yielding ground often catching out the less streetwise newcomers, you still need a leap of faith, but she is the sort who could travel better than most and hit the frame at the very least. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mixed Feelings is the straightforward win play because she brings the best piece of form and the best rating into the race. For an each-way punt, Moon Aura makes more appeal than some of the exposed rivals at the prices. Bang Bang is the obvious danger, while market support for Lake Bonney or Miss Romagna would also be worth noting.

16:17 – Horseware Ireland Student Derby Handicap

Race Details: 1m 1f | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This is a modest little handicap but not an impossible one to unravel. Zipster heads the market after a solid recent third and, from stall 1, is clearly going to be popular in a race where tactical position could matter plenty. Tyraxes arrives off another placed effort and has been knocking on the door, while Star Mind and Teffian Warrior are the other obvious ones if building a shortlist from current marks and recent enough bits of form. Baila Conmigo is capable on the right day but isn’t quite straightforward, and the rest need to step forward. In truth, this doesn’t look a deep contest, so a horse with a clean run and a bit of resolution late on should take plenty of beating.

Top Selections

1. Zipster – 11/8 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr J L Gleeson | Trainer: Gerard O’Leary | Form: 530-93 | Rating: 59 | Topspeed: 25

Zipster is the percentage call. He has the best mark in the field, comes here on the back of a respectable third, and his recent profile suggests he’s holding his form better than most of these. Drawn in 1, he should get an economical trip, which is a definite asset around Leopardstown when these amateur handicaps can get messy enough in the straight. He isn’t bombproof and the Topspeed figure doesn’t exactly scream well-in horse, but this is not a race overloaded with depth. At 11/8 with Bet365, he is short enough, yet still the one with the most solid claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Teffian Warrior – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr Alan O’Sullivan | Trainer: Ciaran Murphy | Form: 87504- | Rating: 55 | Topspeed: 35

Teffian Warrior makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race lacking reliable depth. His overall record is hardly flashy, but a mark of 55 looks workable and that Topspeed figure of 35 stacks up well enough in this company. He shaped a little better than the bare form on a couple of occasions last year and, unlike some of these, doesn’t need to find a stone from nowhere to get involved. Ciaran Murphy runs a few here and this one could easily be the stable’s better play at the prices. With three places on offer, 9/2 looks fair for a horse who should be in the mix if fit and ready after the break. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Zipster is the win bet because he brings the strongest recent form and a handy draw in a race that should not take much winning. For an each-way punt, Teffian Warrior looks the value at the prices in a nine-runner field with three places. Star Mind and Tyraxes are the obvious dangers if either gets a clean, well-timed ride.

16:52 – FM104 “Giddy Up” Handicap

Race Details: 7f | | Going: YIELDING | | flat

This is a proper Leopardstown handicap puzzle rather than a race to get carried away about, with plenty arriving off bits of useful form but not many looking bombproof. Thru And Thru and Glory To Be bring solid recent efforts and are obvious players, while Vega’s Muse is progressive but has to shoulder plenty of weight after a comeback win. I Bid You Ajou also comes here in good order after a runner-up effort and looks the type to be competitive again. The draw could have a say in a 17-runner field over this trip, and on yielding ground I want something proven tough rather than flashy. It should be run at a healthy clip, and that may suit those coming late off a strong pace.

Top Selections

1. Thru And Thru – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Colin Keane | Trainer: Rory Anthony Devine | Form: 7202-3 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 69

He makes plenty of appeal here. Thru And Thru was consistent at the back end of last season and returned with another sound effort when third, suggesting he has come back in the same vein. Stall 1 looks a handy place to operate from if Colin Keane can get him into a smooth early rhythm, and this mark of 82 still looks workable in a race where a few of the more obvious dangers are either drawn wide or asked to prove something. He is not a hidden horse now, but 9/2 is still fair enough for one who should get his race run and holds strong claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Goal Exceeded – 17/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Adam Caffrey | Trainer: Adrian McGuinness | Form: 86586- | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 74

He is a more speculative play, but this is the sort of big-field handicap where Adrian McGuinness runners can easily outrun their price. Goal Exceeded did not end last term in sparkling form, yet he has slipped to a very attractive racing weight of 127 and has the profile of one who could easily be better than those bare figures suggest if ready to go after the break. A draw in 15 is not ideal, though in a strongly-run seven furlongs it is not fatal if they come wide late. At 17/2, he looks the value each-way against shorter ones with fewer excuses. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Thru And Thru is the solid win play: reliable profile, good draw and the booking of Colin Keane all point the right way. For an each-way punt, Goal Exceeded makes more appeal than some of the shorter-priced alternatives because he is well treated on the weights and only needs to return in decent nick. Glory To Be and I Bid You Ajou look the main dangers.

This is the sort of low-grade Leopardstown handicap that can make fools of plenty, with 17 declared originally and a wide-open look once you scratch through the exposed types. Kitty Bear and Methgal arrive with the most persuasive recent form, while Rock Basher is another with obvious claims from a workable mark if building on his reappearance. Roman Harry has been running respectably enough and She’s Ideal is one to note after a fair return, but there are plenty here who need a leap of faith. The yielding ground should put the emphasis on seeing out the 7f properly, and in a race lacking depth, I’d rather side with the runners who are actually knocking on the door than those living on old ratings. Tricky, yes, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Kitty Bear – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Orla Tynan | Trainer: Andrew Slattery | Form: -41542 | Rating: 59 | Topspeed:

Kitty Bear looks the percentage call. She has been holding her form well in this grade, with that sequence reading like the profile of a filly ready to collect another handicap, and the recent second suggests she is still moving in the right direction. A mark of 59 is hardly intimidating and stall 1 could be a help if she gets into a smooth early rhythm around here. Andrew Slattery’s yard also has Exceeding in the race, but this one makes more appeal on what she has been doing lately. At 9/2, she doesn’t scream giveaway price, but she does look the most solid option in a race full of doubts. Bet: WIN

2. Roman Harry – 9/1 with Bet365

Jockey: N G McCullagh | Trainer: S M Duffy | Form: 501-44 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 54

Roman Harry is the each-way play because he brings a bit more substance than most of these at the prices. He signed off last season with a win and has returned with two solid fourth-place efforts, suggesting he is holding his level and should be ready to strike if the race falls right. His topspeed figure of 54 stacks up perfectly well in this company, and while a mark of 64 asks a question, it is not beyond him in a contest of this nature. At 9/1 with five places on offer, he makes plenty of sense as the safer each-way punt in a race where plenty of rivals are easier to oppose than fancy. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Kitty Bear is the win bet because she arrives in the best nick and looks the most dependable in a messy handicap. Roman Harry is the each-way alternative at 9/1, with his recent consistency making him appealing for the places. The main dangers are Methgal, who has stronger recent figures than most, and Rock Basher, who is weighted to get involved if sharper second time out.
