Leopardstown & Southwell Racing Tips - Andrew Mount's Best Bets for Sunday 28 December

Andrew Mount seeks to end Christmas week on a positive note, with three best bets across Sunday’s cards in Britain and Ireland.

They include a selection in the Grade 1 Savills Chase at Leopardstown, while he also picks out two best bets on the all-weather at Southwell.

Leopardstown Racing Tips (Sunday 28 December 2025)

Leopardstown’s Savills Chase has often been a stronger guide towards the Cheltenham Festival than the King George in recent years, and Andrew Mount’s tip at the track on Sunday runs in the big race, and at a sizeable price.

2.30 Leopardstown – Croke Park (0.5pt e/w – 50/1 Sky Bet, four places, otherwise 66-1 William Hill, three places)

Croke Park is the fourth-fastest horse in the 12-runner Grade 1 Savills Chase according to Proform’s speed figures and I can’t resist a small interest at a huge price. Gordon Elliott’s seven-year-old tends to come to hand early in the peak jumps season and his full record from October to December stands at 1111133 (5-7) for a profit of £27.57 to a £1 level stake at SP. He’s been a little underwhelming in his two starts this season, finishing a 16-length third to Heart Wood when 11-4 for a Grade 3 contest at Punchestown on his reappearance before his 13-length third to Firefox in Grade 2 company at Down Royal but the 2m3.5f trip was too short last time and the return to Leopardstown will suit. His two runs here produced a Grade 1 course and distance novice chase success on Boxing Day/St Stephen’s Day last year and an 11-1 second to Ballyburn at last season’s Dublin Racing Festival at time of year (February 2nd) when he usually struggles.

Southwell Racing Tips (Sunday 28 December 2025)

2.45 Southwell – Thequietman (1pt win – 9/4 bet365)

I won’t quote my tracker notes for Hostility as they are far complimentary and contain a number of swear words, but Mick Appleby’s 12-race maiden is out again at Southwell today in the 7f Class 5 novice stakes and we simply have to take him on, as we did at Wolverhampton last time where he was only fourth of five as the 6-5 favourite. We managed to find the winner – Squiffy – that day, as we did when the Son of No Nay Never was beaten into second place at similar odds by Coronado King at Wolverhampton on October 28th. He’s unlikely to be as short in the betting today (though I said that last time) and the bet has to be Thequietman, the only runner with experience who has exceeded the class par time for a race of this nature. The son of Farhh was himself expensive to follow in four starts for Joseph O’Brien in Ireland but those came on turf and he’s bred to appreciate the switch to Tapeta. The first-time hood could also help – his new trainer’s five-year record with this headgear on the all-weather stands at six winners from 20 bets for a profit of £8.87 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£10.73 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). Newcastle scorer Bowfell is the obvious threat though he concedes weight all round and has yet to show a great deal on the clock.

3.20 Southwell – Em Four (1pt win – 10/1 bet365)

Em Four wouldn’t look an obvious bet after his ninth of 14 at Chelmsford ten days ago but he made some late headway from a poor wide draw that day to finish less than five lengths behind the winner in a hot Class 2 contest and the big field didn’t suit.  Jamie Osborne’s three-year-old has form figures in single-digit line-ups of 16441541 (3-9), improving to 1151 (3-4) over 6f only, with the wins at 12-1, 6-1 and 4-1 in fields of exactly seven runners. He faces just eight rivals today, drops back down to Class 5 level and Rob Hornby rides the course and distance well.
