14:30 – Powell & Construction Poultry Buildings Novices’ Hurdle (GBB Race)

Race Details: 1m 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This looks a small-field novice that revolves around one obvious horse. Un Sens A La Vie brings the best hurdle form by a fair margin, has the standout rating of 130 and, on what we’ve seen so far, sets a clear standard for the others to aim at. The question is less whether he’s the most likely winner and more whether anything can make a proper race of it. Snatch A Glance is the one with enough solid recent form to at least ask the favourite a question, while Sonic Pioneer is interesting on his juvenile rating but comes here with plenty to prove after two pulled-up efforts. The rest need marked improvement, so this is not the deepest Class 4 novice you’ll see, but the market has probably got the shape of it right.

Top Selections

1. Un Sens A La Vie – 4/9 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies | Trainer: Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies | Form: -17214 | Rating: 130 | Topspeed: 125

He is short for a reason. A mark of 130 makes him comfortably the class act in this line-up and that Topspeed figure of 125 underlines just how much stronger his form is than most of these. The recent 4 in his form string is no real alarm bell in a race of this nature; judged on the body of his novice hurdle work, he has achieved far more than his rivals and should be very hard to lower if turning up in the same mood. Sam Twiston-Davies is an ideal man to have on board around Ludlow and, while 4/9 is not a gift, he looks the solid one in a race lacking depth. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Snatch A Glance – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Fern O’Brien | Trainer: Fergal O’Brien | Form: -2131F | Rating: 122 | Topspeed: 105

For an each-way play, Snatch A Glance makes much more appeal than the rest of the opposition. He had been in good nick before falling last time, and that mishap came after a sequence of consistent efforts that included a win and a couple of solid placed runs. He still has 8lb to find with the favourite on official figures, so he doesn’t make obvious win appeal unless Un Sens A La Vie underperforms, but in a six-runner race he looks the one most likely to keep tabs on the market leader. Fergal O’Brien’s horses are usually well prepared for these spring novice events, and 6/1 feels fair for a horse with the clearest place credentials among the dangers. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple. Un Sens A La Vie is the win bet and the one they all have to beat on ratings, speed figures and overall substance. If you want a second angle, Snatch A Glance is the each-way option in a race where only a couple look reliable enough to trust. Sonic Pioneer is the obvious danger if bouncing back, but recent form says he’s opposable.

15:00 – Templar Medical Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This looks a competitive little staying handicap rather than a race packed with hidden depth, and there are several with very similar profiles. Maximum Offers arrives off the back of a win and is the obvious starting point, while Tzarmix has been knocking firmly on the door and looks sure to give another solid account. The Egyptian Ginge is also hard to dismiss after back-to-back second places, though his mark leaves little room for excuses. Lower down the weights, Noonetellsmenothin is interesting if bouncing back, and Windsor Blue is not entirely ruled out if this extra yardage suits. In a seven-runner field, tactical positioning and a clean round of jumping could easily prove decisive, and this is the sort of race where one progressive stayer can suddenly take control.

Top Selections

1. Maximum Offers – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Sheehan | Trainer: Jamie Snowden | Form: 2-3431 | Rating: 118 | Topspeed: 87

He is hardly a hidden gem after winning last time, but he still makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking a standout. The recent form figures suggest a horse who has been holding his level well before deservedly getting his head back in front, and Jamie Snowden’s runners in these staying hurdles are usually straightforward enough to trust. Gavin Sheehan is a positive booking in a race that may become tactical, and a mark of 118 does not look beyond him if he is still progressing over this trip. At 2/1 he is not a giveaway, but he is the one with the fewest questions to answer. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. The Egyptian Ginge – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr Jamie Neild | Trainer: Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies | Form: 555322 | Rating: 117 | Topspeed: 111

He has shaped like a winner waiting to happen on his last two starts and, in a small field with three places on offer, that makes him the obvious each-way angle. The pair of seconds suggest he is thriving now, and his topspeed figure of 111 is one of the better numbers in the line-up. The Twiston-Davies yard knows exactly how to place this type, and if Jamie Neild can keep him in a rhythm he should be staying on when others have cried enough. Available at 9/2, he looks a fair bit more interesting from a value perspective than some of the shorter ones. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Maximum Offers is the solid win play after scoring last time and looks the percentage call in a race short on stars. For an each-way punt, The Egyptian Ginge makes plenty of sense given his recent runner-up efforts and reliable profile. Tzarmix is the obvious danger after a string of near-misses, while Noonetellsmenothin could outrun his price if back to his better form.

15:30 – Hr Smith Handicap Chase (For The Boyne Cup) (GBB Race)

Race Details: 2m 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This looks a competitive little staying handicap chase rather than a deep one, and there are a few with something to prove despite the small field. Annie Express heads the market after a recent win and is clearly on the up in this sphere, while Gris Majeur brings the most solid sequence of placed form and should be thereabouts again. Epic West has been threatening to get his head back in front and appeals as one of the more reliable options, whereas Petty Cash is weighted to get involved if bouncing back from a lesser effort. At the other end, veterans like Almazhar Garde and Arrycan need to show more spark. It feels a race where current rhythm and efficient jumping will count for plenty.

Top Selections

1. Epic West – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Gavin Sheehan | Trainer: Jamie Snowden | Form: 12-023 | Rating: 124 | Topspeed: 118

Epic West looks the percentage call. He has been knocking on the door this season, with figures of 0, 2 and 3 suggesting his turn is near, and that latest placed effort did nothing to dent the view that this mark is workable. A rating of 124 is fair enough in this company and his Topspeed figure of 118 says he has the gears for a race of this nature if seeing the trip out strongly. Gavin Sheehan is a notable booking for a yard that places its runners sensibly, and at 4/1 he makes more appeal than the shorter-priced favourite in a race where steadiness counts. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Gris Majeur – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Sean Houlihan | Trainer: Sheila Lewis | Form: -12322 | Rating: 125 | Topspeed: 113

Gris Majeur is the obvious each-way angle because he keeps running his race and doesn’t look like one to beat himself. Those recent figures of 1, 2, 3, 2, 2 tell their own story: he is holding form well, staying his races and operating consistently from around this level. He is only 1lb higher than Epic West on the figures and arrives with fewer questions than most, which matters in a contest full of in-and-outers. Sean Houlihan should be able to keep him in a handy rhythm, and with 3 places on offer in an eight-runner field, 4/1 is perfectly fair for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Epic West is the win play at 4/1, as he looks ready to strike after a string of solid efforts and has fewer negatives than most. Gris Majeur is the sensible each-way option given how dependable his recent form has been. Annie Express is the obvious danger after that latest success, while Petty Cash could also bounce back if forgiving his last run.

16:00 – Powell & Company Construction Stables & Buildings Mares’ Novices’ Limited Handicap Hurdle

Race Details: 2m 5f | Class 5 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This is not a deep mares’ novice handicap, but it is the sort of race that can still punish lazy thinking. After Many Days brings the clearest recent profile, arriving here on the back of a string of seconds and looking sure to give her running again, while Klervia and Shes All Pride sit just behind her in a race where low-level consistency could count for plenty. Imperial Pride is the awkward one to place, with bits of recent promise but plenty of patchy form attached, and Jlow has enough ability to get involved if putting it together. In truth, this looks more of a workable puzzle than a strong contest, and over 2m5f at Ludlow I’d want a mare who settles, jumps and keeps finding rather than one reliant on a sudden chunk of improvement.

Top Selections

1. After Many Days – 11/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies | Trainer: Henry Daly | Form: 424222 | Rating: 97 | Topspeed: 94

She has turned into a serial placer, which is the slight niggle, but in a race of this nature that level of consistency is hard to ignore. Those recent 2s tell you she is holding her form well, and a mark of 97 still looks manageable given she has the best Topspeed figure in the field. Henry Daly’s runners in these staying hurdling events are usually straightforward enough, and Sam Twiston-Davies is the right man to make sure this doesn’t become tactical. At 11/4 she is hardly a hidden gem, but she sets the standard on what we know and holds the strongest win claims. Bet type: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Shes All Pride – 13/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Lewis Stones | Trainer: Deborah Cole | Form: 377-P3 | Rating: 99 | Topspeed: 73

She makes each-way appeal because there was at least a bit of encouragement in that latest third after a break, and this does not look a race overloaded with solid stayers. She gets in here with just 145 on her back, which could be handy if this turns into a proper test from some way out, and her mark of 99 gives her a realistic chance if building on that comeback effort. Lewis Stones rides Ludlow neatly enough, and this mare looks the type to keep grinding when others have cried enough. Around 13/2 is fair in a race where hitting the frame looks very achievable. Bet type: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

After Many Days is the percentage call and the one to keep onside for win purposes, even if she has become expensive to follow. Shes All Pride is the each-way angle at a backable price, especially with three places on offer. Klervia is the obvious danger if bouncing back from a modest run, while Imperial Pride is not easy to trust but has enough recent spark to feature.

16:30 – Powell & Company Construction Agricultural Buildings Mares’ Open Maiden NH Flat Race (C3 Elim) (GBB)

Race Details: 1m 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This looks a typically informative Ludlow mares’ bumper, with the four-year-olds receiving weight and likely to dominate the market. Milly Ocean sets the standard on what we’ve seen after a perfectly respectable fourth on debut, while Meliden Mountain is the obvious unknown with a powerful yard and strong support suggesting she’s been showing the right signs at home. Of those with experience, Britway Belle and Mysti Meadow have shown enough to think they can be competitive without screaming certainty. The older debutantes need a leap of faith, and in a 14-runner field that makes this more of a punter’s puzzle than a penalty kick. Even so, the race shape does look to revolve around the unexposed four-year-olds, and I’d be surprised if the winner came from too far outside that group.

Top Selections

1. Milly Ocean – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jonathan Burke | Trainer: Fergal O’Brien | Form: 4 | Rating: 103 | Topspeed: 59

Milly Ocean brings the clearest piece of bumper form into the race and that counts for plenty in this company. Her debut fourth reads well enough for a mares’ maiden of this nature, and the 103 figure is the joint-best on offer among those with substance to their profile. Fergal O’Brien does very well with these bumper types and Jonathan Burke is exactly the sort you want on one in a race where positioning and timing matter. At 2/1 she is no giveaway, but she looks the solid one against rivals who are either learning on the job or relying on stable whispers. Hard to oppose on balance. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Britway Belle – 10/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Oscar Palmer | Trainer: Henry Oliver | Form: 73 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 75

Britway Belle appeals as the each-way play because she has already shown she can handle the bumper environment and her form has a bit more backbone than some of the flashier prices around her. She improved from seventh to third, and that step forward is exactly what you want to see at this stage. Henry Oliver also runs Mrs Cravatte, but this mare is plainly the stable’s more persuasive contender on known evidence. The topspeed figure of 75 catches the eye in this field and, at 10/1, she looks a fair bit bigger than her chance if she can take another small step forward. Solid each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Milly Ocean is the straightforward win play because she owns the best form on paper and doesn’t need much improvement to take this. For an each-way angle, Britway Belle makes more appeal than several shorter-priced unknowns in a race full of guesswork. The main danger is Meliden Mountain, whose market strength and connections make her the obvious threat despite the lack of racecourse evidence.

17:05 – Eddie Mapp Memorial Open Hunters’ Chase

Race Details: 2m 7f | Class 4 | Going: 5.8) (watering) (Good (goingstick) | | jumps

This is not the deepest hunter chase you will ever see, but it is a fascinating little puzzle all the same. Potters Party heads the market and is easy enough to see why on ratings, though his recent completed efforts do not exactly scream certainty after a 7 and a U this year. Mr Glass arrives in better nick on the face of it, with back-to-back placed efforts and a solid enough profile for this sort of contest, while Fix At All has been shaping like a horse ready to nick one. The Paddy Pie is the old boy in the field at 13 and has a bit to find on figures despite a recent sequence of wins. Prohus Yank is respected by the market, but his recent form is littered with non-completions. It looks a race where jumping and attitude will decide plenty.

Top Selections

1. Mr Glass – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Mr Michael Treneer | Trainer: Mrs D J Treneer | Form: 1P-P33 | Rating: 118 | Topspeed: 89

Mr Glass appeals as the percentage call in a race full of doubts. He is one of the few who comes here with recent placed form, and that mark of 118 gives him plenty of substance in this company. The topspeed figure of 89 is also a useful pointer that he still retains enough ability to make his presence felt over this sort of trip. Michael Treneer knows him inside out and, in a hunter chase where rhythm over fences is half the battle, that counts for plenty. At 7/2 he is not wildly overpriced, but he does look the runner with the soundest current profile and holds strong claims if reproducing either of those last two efforts. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Fix At All – 7/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Mr T Walsh | Trainer: Callum Bickers-price | Form: -PP323 | Rating: 108 | Topspeed: 69

Fix At All makes plenty of each-way appeal in a smallish field where the favourite is not bombproof. His recent form figures of 3, 2, 3 suggest he is at least turning up and running his race, which is more than can be said for a few of these, and consistency is a valuable commodity in hunters. He does have a bit to find on official figures with Mr Glass and Potters Party, but this trip looks within range and he is at least coming here in one piece. T Walsh takes over for a yard that can ready one for these specialist races, and 7/1 looks fair enough for a horse likely to keep plugging on when others have cried enough. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Mr Glass is the win play because he brings the most convincing recent form into a race where reliability is thin on the ground. Fix At All is the each-way punt at the bigger price, especially with only seven declared and several rivals carrying obvious risks. Potters Party is the danger on class and ratings, but he is short enough given his latest efforts.
