There are five meetings taking place on Thursday in Britain and Ireland. Four of those are jumps cards on a busy day for National Hunt fans.
Our tipster Joe Napier sticks to the jumps for his best bets on the day. His selections run at Ludlow and Wetherby.
Ludlow Racing Tips (Thursday 26 February)
Ludlow’s card contains six races on Thursday. The feature is the Forbra Gold Cup handicap in which one of our top tips run.
2.07 Ludlow – Prince Zaltar (1pt win – 7/1)
Harry Skelton only has two rides at Ludlow on Thursday, speaking to the chances of Prince Zaltar. His other is a heavily odds-on favourite, but he can land the double in the Forbra Gold Cup. The selection ran well on his chase debut for the yard at Doncaster in December, finishing third to a course specialist. He was not as good next time at Kempton, but that was in a better class 3 event than this. He was pulled up over hurdles next time out but that was on heavy ground. His overall profile suggests he has the form to win this, especially as the handicapper has dropped him 3lb compared to his latest run over fences.
2.42 Ludlow – I Am The Moon (1pt win – 10/3)
The progressive I Am The Moon can take this mares’ handicap. The Twiston-Davies’ charge has generally been very consistent under rules. Indeed, she is yet to finish outside the first four over hurdles, with her chase runs accounting for some of her poorer form figures. She won readily when returned to Doncaster last time and is only 4lb higher here. The step back up to 3m looks a potential positive as well given how she sees out races. James Turner takes off 5lb from the bottom of the handicap, meaning she will carry a very light weight too.
Wetherby Racing Tips (Thursday 26 February)
Wetherby hosts a seven-race card on Thursday. Our two tips run in class 4 and class 3 company on the day.
2.25 Wetherby – Pierrot Jaguen (1pt win – 5/1)
Pierrot Jaguen is relatively lightly-raced for his age and still has better to offer. Olly Murphy’s runner readily won his only point-to-point, from which the runner-up has proved useful. Since then, Pierrot Jaguen has got off the mark over hurdles, but bumped into some talented rivals in that sphere when third on his only other two timber starts. This season, he needed the run when taking a blow at Carlisle before a close fourth at Wetherby. He ran a very similar race to the winner, staying on stoutly at the finish. That winner has gone in again since and the selection is forgiven his latest run at Uttoxeter. Conditions that day proved brutally testing when he faded to third, but this 3m trip should be ideal. He is down 1lb in the handicap for this race and should contend.
4.10 Wetherby – Blue Carpet (1pt win – 4/1)
Woodland Park has potential for Olly Murphy, but so does Blue Carpet of the Skelton yard. Harry may be riding elsewhere, but Tristan Durrell can step in for a winner here. The six-year-old won his first bumper utilising his stamina before being outpaced on his next three runs. An easy race at this track in October helped him get off the mark before an excellent effort at Newbury. He was third in his first handicap upped to 3m that day. The handicapper has given him a 2lb rise, but Skelton has freshened him up since. That was a run full of promise in a race that has worked out well. The experience can be put to good use here.
