Manifesto Novices' Chase tips, odds, racecard & trends: Lulamba can show his class at Aintree

The Manifesto Novices’ Chase is the opening Grade 1 for novice chasers at Aintree’s Grand National meeting. A small, select field, has been declared for the race, with one big name running, in particular.

Lulamba runs for Nicky Henderson and Nico De Boinville, and Joe Napier previews whether their star can overcome his Cheltenham Festival defeat.

2026 Manifesto Novices’ Chase Runners

Lulamba is the only place to start in the runners list for the Manifesto Novices’ Chase. A winner already in open company in the Game Spirit Chase at Newbury, he was third after a horrible mistake at the penultimate fence in the Arkle. All season, he has shaped like a horse who will be better over further, despite his prowess over 2m. He should realise a lot of that promise here.

Both Jax Junior and Mambonumberfive have had good seasons in Britain. The former could not cope with the high quality field in the Arkle, but was “best of the rest” in fourth. Mambonumberfive returns after disappointing at Warwick and skipping Cheltenham. 2m4f on a sound surface may prove his ideal conditions.

Blueking d’Oroux also missed Cheltenham, but his chasing form does not match his hurdles efforts as of yet. Therefore, the main danger to Lulamba may well be Irish raider Koktail Divin. He only faded late on in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase having improved with every start over fences beforehand. If Lulamba makes any jumping errors, he looks the likeliest to profit.

Form: 1-2152 D

W: 11st 7lb
Age: 7 yo Gelding
Useful 2m4f novice chaser but he won a substandard edition of the Rising Stars at Wincanton and his close second at Kempton (with cheekpieces fitted) last time was achieved in a handicap; faces a stiffer task at this level in the retained headgear.
Form: 214114 D
OR: 145
W: 11st 7lb
Age: 7 yo Gelding
Finished 18l behind Lulamba in the Arkle but may fare better in this rematch, with the return to further a likely plus; readily bagged Grade 2 honours at Kempton (2m4f, good to soft) the time before, enhancing his good strike-rate when racing beyond 2m.
OUR TIP
Form: 4-2216 D
OR: 150
W: 11st 7lb
Age: 6 yo Gelding
Non-stayer (shaped better than the bare result) in the 3m1f Brown Advisory at Cheltenham having surprisingly swerved the 2m4f Jack Richards option; broadly progressive otherwise and scored by a wide margin at Leopardstown (2m5f, yielding) the time before, recording a very useful RPR; ran well in the Mersey over hurdles at this meeting 12 months ago; remains of major interest, back down in distance.
Form: -11113 BF
OR: 162
W: 11st 7lb
Age: 5 yo Gelding
Acts on any ground; ran creditably on the figures but was only third when favourite for the Arkle, in which a mistake two out cost him some ground when challenging; has otherwise been a rising force at about 2m and his record away from the Cheltenham Festival is 6-6, comfortably beating his elders in the Game Spirit for the most recent success; gives the firm impression he’s ready for a crack at this new trip; sets the standard and retains the potential for rating higher still.
Form: 7-1113 C
OR: 146
W: 11st 7lb
Age: 5 yo Gelding
Comes here fresh having bypassed the Cheltenham Festival and been absent since a Kingmaker defeat that is perhaps best forgiven due to the heavy ground; 3-3 over fences otherwise, including 2m wins at Aintree (handicap) and Kempton (Grade 2, readily); may resume improvement, provided he stays the new trip.

Betting Forecast

25/1 Blueking DOroux, 9/1 Jax Junior, 5/2 Koktail Divin, 8/13 Lulamba, 14/1 Mambonumberfive

Verdict

The Arkle proved a bump in the road but Lulamba may resume his progress to the top rank, with this new trip likely to suit. However, from a betting perspective KOKTAIL DIVIN is a very plausible alternative with his own progressive engine supplying plenty of horsepower and this scenario looking ideal for one who dominated from the front at Leopardstown, prior to shaping better than the bare form in a Cheltenham Festival race that proved the wrong option.[Steve Boow]

2026 Manifesto Novices’ Chase Tips

The long term plan had always been to step Lulamba up in trip, and he now does so. His mistake two out in the Arkle was enforced by the strong gallop over 2m, which has always looked short enough for him. He can make amends upped in distance, with Koktail Divin the likeliest to chase him home having improved with every chase start before Cheltenham. Mambonumberfive may be best of the rest having missed the Festival, unlike Jax Junior.

  1. Lulamba
  2. Koktail Divin
  3. Mambonumberfive
