Market Rasen Racing Tips (Tuesday 17 February)
Seven races take place at Market Rasen on Tuesday. Our tips run in the first and fourth races on the card.
1.30 Market Rasen – Senator (1pt win – 11/10)
Preference is for Senator to get off the mark in this juvenile maiden. Jamie Snowden’s runner had promising form in France before his third on British debut at Kempton. That came in a decent field on good ground, with the runner-up winning since. He was always likely to prefer some cut in the going too, as his subsequent second at Chepstow proved. He was beaten just over a length with decent horses finishing behind him and he should come good at the third attempt.
3.02 Market Rasen – Pretending (1pt win – 14/1)
One horse who is trending positively at Market Rasen on Tuesday is Pretending. The grey is very experienced, having run 28 races under rules. She has three wins over hurdles for Lucy Wadham too, securing the last of those off a mark of 116. That was at Uttoxeter in October 2024, while she was a close third at Cheltenham last April. This season started much slower for her, but she was a more competitive fourth of seven at Plumpton on soft. She had previously appeared to prefer top of the ground, but some cut might just suit her given she has won on heavy before. She is now down another 3lb to a rating of just 113, which clearly underestimates her best. Given she looks like she is improving once again, this could be the time to catch her.
Newbury Racing Tips (Tuesday 17 February)
Some potential Cheltenham Festival contenders may be seen at Newbury on Tuesday. We have two best bets for you to follow on the card.
2.45 Newbury – Lancelot Allen (1pt win – 7/2)
The four-year-old Talakan has some noteworthy form, but this will be trickier against his elders. The main danger could be Lancelot Allen, who was a 200/1 outsider in the Champion Bumper when last seen. He never featured that day, but that was obviously a difficult assignment so early in his career. The son of Arc winner Rail Link had won on bumper debut at Bangor on soft ground, with the runner-up that day since winning three of his first four hurdles starts. The selection has been off for a long time, but given he won on debut, he should be fit enough here. He has the profile of a horse who should progress for his introduction to hurdling for Jane Williams.
3.55 Newbury – Major Fortune (1pt win – 3/1)
Major Fortune has very much been a form horse, often having been able to follow one victory with another. Having endured a barren spell, he broke a ten-race duck with a win at Wincanton last time out. He had also run well on return at Cheltenham in conditions that would not have suited, so he has hinted for a while that he is becoming well-handicapped. That was proven when he coasted through his latest race in first-time cheekpieces. He did not end up winning by a wide margin, but had the race in very safe keeping. He is up just 5lb in the handicap, which is lenient, while he is also a guaranteed stayer.
