1:50 Newmarket – Princess Royal Stakes (Sponsored By Boyle Sports) (Group 3) (Fillies & Mares)  (Class 1) (3yo+) – Miss Justice 8/1 1pt EW 3 places

The Gosdens have won three of the last ten renewals of this contest and are triply represented here. Two of those successes came with Journey in 2015 and 2016, and her first win came after landing the Listed Upavon Stakes at Salisbury, which MISS JUSTICE gamely fended off Revoir in last month.

The Justify daughter had just one start to her name as a three-year-old last season when fourth here over a mile, and she reappeared with from a 377 day layoff earlier this season when a length second to the promising Pina Sonata, who backed that up under a penalty next time out. The pair pulled twelve lengths clear from the third there and Miss Justice was giving away 10lbs, so it was a promising reappearance. She was a beaten favourite next time out under the same conditions, before again finishing second in a competitive 0-90 handicap at Sandown.

The return to novice fillies company and the step up in trip to 1m4f saw her belatedly get off the mark at Southwell, but it was her performance last time out which merits her consideration in this contest. Despite rated only 85 and still a maiden on turf, she travelled through the Upavon Stakes in good style under William Buick and repelled the challenge of Revoir late on, giving her 8lbs. The pair pulled clear of the fourth and now Miss Justice appears to be getting everything together, I wouldn’t fancy that form to be reversed this time around.

She hails from a talented Juddmonte family featuring the likes of Timepiece and Passage Of Time, with the former improving markedly with age (landed Falmouth as a 4yo), so she’s bred to continue improving and this step back up in trip can bring out further improvement in this  company.

2:25 Newmarket – BOYLE Sports Home Of Early Payout Rockfel Stakes (Group 2) (Fillies) (Class 1) (2yo) – Sukanya 25/1 0.5pt EW 3 places + Ice Sovereigns 66/1 0.5pt EW 3 places

Mick Channon has won this race three times in the past with double figured prices and his Havana Grey filly SUKANYA looks to have been overlooked with the ‘flashier’ connections coming to the fore of the market.

She made a winning debut at 16/1 in June despite having to overcome trouble in running, staying on strongly in the manner of one requiring further. Admittedly that form hasn’t worked out, but she bettered that effort to post an RPR of 87 in the Princess Margaret Stakes at Ascot despite beaten four lengths, failing to make much of an impression in rear though she raced without cover for the most part.

She then improved to finish a three length fourth in a competitive looking Prestige Stakes at Goodwood which has often been a good pathway to this (including with Lahableeb for Channon), staying on late in the day having not had the smoothest of passages early on. She was only a tenth behind Aylin who took the G2 May Hill Stakes next time out, with the winner Precise landing  the G1 Moyglare.

Sukanya then made the trip across to Ireland for a listed contest and she paid the price for racing  up close behind the Coolmore pace setter Venosa, with the 1/2F Diamond Necklace swooping by  late on. She’s likely bumped into a very smart filly there from the family of Magic Wand, and those  latest pair of efforts make her a rock solid each way proposition here with proven black type form.

I’d also like to save on ICE SOVEREIGNS, as it’s surprising to see the yard pitch her in deep here despite a more than workable handicap mark of 85. She was looked after on debut once the chance had gone, but the forms worked out strongly with the third and second winning next time out (latter hit the frame in a valuable Deauville conditions race), and the three lengths winner is now rated 100 having finished second in G3 company earlier this month.

Ice Sovereign’s then finished a five length third to Aylin on heavy ground at Goodwood, looking  unsuited by the heavy going. The second is now rated 90 after placing in G3 company last time out, and the winner won the May Hill as mentioned earlier.

She’s unbeaten in two starts since albeit in lesser company than this, but the five length second  from Carlisle has gone in since and the manner within which she’s won those latest two starts suggest she’s only going the right way. She gave 5lbs and 9lbs to two colts off top-weight in a Carlisle Nursery last time out having made all in good style, and she’ll bid to repeat that feat from  stall one which has provided four of the last seven winners.
