The Group 2 Mill Reef Stakes is named after one of racing’s favourite sons of the flat. Ian Balding’s hero of the early 1970s was a quality juvenile, appropriately for this two-year-old contest.
GG tipster Joe Napier previews this year’s race, featuring the unbeaten Arapaho Gold.
2026 Mill Reef Stakes Runners
The unbeaten Arapaho Gold will look to concede weight all round for a second straight Group 2 success. Michael Dods’ star was an impressive winner of the Gimcrack Stakes on the Knavesmire, stepping forward on anything he had shown before. The Bayside Boy gelding is consistent and admirable, and more than likely to go very close.
This does not look as competitive overall as the Gimcrack, but the filly Jolivette is an intriguing rival. For Andrew Balding, she had struggled to get competitive in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot and the Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes at Newmarket, but produced a fine amount of improvement under more patient tactics when third in the Lowther Stakes at York. That is very strong form, perhaps the best on offer, and there could be more to come.
Godolphin won this last year and Nabati could prove dangerous under Billy Loughnane. He was slightly disappointing in Listed company at Doncaster, but chased Arapaho Gold home in close attendance on just his second start. He now receives 3lb and races just eight days after Doncaster.
Regular Group competitor Adaay Of Scarlett will make his presence felt as ever, while Matteo could bounce back after a tricky first Pattern assignment behind Arapaho Gold. Cut A Dash, Mr McCartney and Revels all have their work cut out.

2026 Mill Reef Stakes Tips
Arapaho Gold once again won likeably at York, but things clicked for Jolivette in a red hot renewal of the Lowther Stakes on the Knavesmire last month. Although still keen, she produced a far better display ridden patiently. She looks a serious threat with the potential of more to come for connections having such a brilliant season, giving Andrew Balding a win in the race named after his father’s greatest horse. Godolphin runner Nabati is another contender.
