13:50 – Reichhartinger Rush Handicap

Race Details: 1m 7f | Class 5 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary little staying handicap rather than a deep contest, and the market has every right to centre on Cascade Hall, who arrives in the best current nick and gets in here off just 120. He sets the standard on recent form, but at a short price in a seven-runner race he is not completely bombproof. Elemental Eye has the topspeed figure to get involved if building on two respectable runs this term, while Velvet Whisper is the interesting one now stepping into this trip after two disappointing efforts. Simple Star is reliable enough at this level without looking particularly well treated. It is not a race packed with lurkers, but getting the stamina call right over this 1m7f will matter.

Top Selections

1. Cascade Hall – 5/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Lauren Young | Trainer: Jim Goldie | Form: 507-12 | Rating: 85 | Topspeed: 77

He is the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is still the right one. Cascade Hall returned with a win and then backed it up with a solid second, so he comes here as the only runner in the field with properly convincing recent momentum. The useful part is that he does it off a very low weight, and his 77 topspeed figure is joint-best in the line-up. Jim Goldie’s old stager looks well suited by this sort of test and, in a race lacking depth, he simply has fewer questions to answer than most. At 5/4, he is short enough, but still hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Elemental Eye – 11/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Andrew Mullen | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 017-55 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 77

If you want to take on the favourite for a bit of each-way value, Elemental Eye makes most appeal. His last two runs have not screamed imminent winner, but they have been perfectly respectable, and they came off marks that suggest he is still capable of being competitive in a Class 5 of this nature. Crucially, he matches the best topspeed figure in the race and carries only 124, which gives him a decent platform if this turns into a proper test at the trip. Andrew Mullen knows him well enough, and 11/2 looks fair in a race where several rivals have bigger holes in their profile. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Cascade Hall is the straight win play and the one with the fewest negatives in a modest contest. For an each-way punt in this seven-runner field, Elemental Eye appeals most at the prices given his figures and workable weight. Velvet Whisper is the danger if the step up in trip sparks a revival, but he has a bit to prove after two flat efforts.

14:25 – Menzies Meander EBF Restricted Novice Stakes (Bands B-D) (EBF Restricted Qual’) (GBB/IRE Incentive)

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a fairly tight little 2yo novice rather than a deep one, with the market understandably centring on Time For The Moon and Heldobeldo after both made immediate promise on debut. Time For The Moon sets the standard on figures with a rating of 78 after finishing third first time out, while Heldobeldo is only just behind him on 75 and shaped like a colt who would come on plenty for the experience. Tribal Appearance has already had two goes and brings a touch more street-smarts, but he may just lack the raw upside of the front pair. The others need to improve sharply from limited or modest evidence. In a six-runner race, class and professionalism should count for plenty, and it looks more about choosing the right one from the top of the market than unearthing a real shock.

Top Selections

1. Time For The Moon – 10/11 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 3 | Rating: 78 | Topspeed:

He’s the obvious one, but sometimes the obvious one is still the right one. Time For The Moon produced the best piece of form on offer when third on debut and that 78 rating gives him a narrow but clear edge in this field. Charlie Johnston’s juveniles are usually well enough drilled to cope with a track like Musselburgh, and Daniel Tudhope is an eye-catching booking round here. The step into this restricted novice looks logical, and with natural improvement from first to second start he holds strong claims of taking control. At 10/11 he is no giveaway, but he’s hard to oppose on what we’ve seen. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Tribal Appearance – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Jack Doughty | Trainer: Dr Richard Newland & Jamie Insole | Form: 24 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed:

For an each-way angle in a race lacking depth, Tribal Appearance makes some appeal at 5/1. He has the benefit of experience after two runs, and while his form figures of 24 don’t scream future star, they do suggest a juvenile learning the job and holding his level. A mark of 77 leaves him right in the mix on bare numbers, and in a race where a couple of these are complete unknowns that reliability matters. He may not have quite the same scope as the two market principals, but if the favourite underperforms or the pace gets messy, he looks the one most likely to pick up the pieces and hit the frame. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here. Time For The Moon is the win play because he sets the standard and should improve from debut. Tribal Appearance is the each-way punt at a more workable price, especially in a small race where solid experience counts. Heldobeldo is the obvious danger after his promising second first time up, but at the prices the value leans toward siding with Tribal Appearance for place purposes.

15:00 – Construction & Property Recruitment Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a proper three-year-old handicap rather than a weak throw-in, with several arriving on the back of solid efforts and not much separating the principals on official figures. Sandy Craic sets the standard on recent form and topspeed, while Stoic Poet and Homestrait have both been knocking on the door. Maximum Velocity comes here after getting his head in front and is still lightly raced enough to think there may be more to come, while Highland Shah is one of the more interesting unexposed runners from a handy low draw. Musselburgh’s sharp 7f usually rewards a horse that can travel and hold a position, so the pace and how efficiently they handle the track will matter plenty. It’s not impossible to solve, but it is competitive.

Top Selections

1. Sandy Craic – 7/2 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: David O’Meara | Form: 2-4325 | Rating: 80 | Topspeed: 73

Sandy Craic is the percentage call. He has been running well in better-shaped races than this without quite getting the job done, and that topspeed figure of 73 is the standout number in the field. His recent sequence suggests he is holding his form nicely, and dropping into this Class 5 contest gives him obvious appeal if he gets a clean run round. O’Meara and Tudhope are always worth respecting at Musselburgh, and this sharp track should suit a colt who looks straightforward enough tactically. At 7/2 he is not exactly missed, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the one with the strongest claims on balance.

Bet: WIN

2. Highland Shah – 15/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Ryan Sexton | Trainer: Julie Camacho | Form: 43-4 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 60

Highland Shah is the each-way angle at a price that looks fair for a horse with a bit more to offer. He has only had three runs, shaped with promise in all of them, and his latest fourth hinted that a mark of 72 might be workable now entering handicaps. Drawn 2, he should be able to hold a handy spot, which is no bad thing over this course and distance, and Ryan Sexton is the sort of rider who can make good use of that position. He lacks the battle-hardened profile of Sandy Craic, but that is also why there could be upside here. At 15/2, he looks the value each-way punt in the race.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Back Sandy Craic to win, as he brings the best recent form and the strongest speed figure into the race. For an each-way alternative, Highland Shah makes more appeal than some of the exposed rivals because he is unexposed, well drawn and open to improvement. The main danger is Maximum Velocity, who arrives in winning form and could easily take another step forward.

15:40 – Keith Mitchell Law Accountants Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 5 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a tight little mile handicap rather than a deep one, and there should be no hiding place around Musselburgh. Amidst The Chaos heads the market after shaping well in stronger-looking handicaps and his mark of 82 gives him obvious claims, but he is not bombproof in a race where several arrive with bits and pieces of solid course-and-distance style form. Starliner comes here in good nick and has the services of Daniel Tudhope, while Dingwall is the interesting one from stall 1 if able to bounce back from a lesser run last time. Poet’s Dawn is admirably consistent for an 11-year-old, but he may find younger legs just too sharp. Tricky enough, but not impossible to solve.

Top Selections

1. Amidst The Chaos – 2/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Alex Jary | Trainer: Nigel Tinkler | Form: 57-934 | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 70

He makes most appeal on the balance of his recent work. That latest fourth reads perfectly well in the context of this smaller Class 5, and his earlier third suggested he was edging back to the sort of level that makes him very hard to contain off 82. Nigel Tinkler’s runner has enough tactical pace for this track and, while stall 7 is not ideal, he doesn’t look a hostage to one run style. Alex Jary knows how to deliver one late off a strong pace, and there should be enough pressure on here. At 2/1 he is short enough, but still the most likely winner.

Bet: WIN

2. Dingwall – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Greg Fairley | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 222276 | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 73

The each-way angle is Dingwall, who has been knocking on the door for much of the year before a slightly flat effort last time. I’m inclined to forgive that because his previous sequence of seconds says plenty about his current wellbeing, and his topspeed figure of 73 is the best in the field. The inside draw in stall 1 could be a real asset around here if Greg Fairley can secure a handy stalking position, and this mark of 77 is not beyond him at all. Available at 7/1, he looks the value play against the favourite in a race lacking depth.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Amidst The Chaos is the straightforward win play and sets the standard on recent form. For punters looking beyond the favourite, Dingwall makes plenty of each-way appeal from a good draw at 7/1. Starliner is the obvious danger after his recent placed effort, while Poet’s Dawn is reliable enough to sneak into the frame again.

16:15 – Travis Perkins Edinburgh Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 4 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This is a tight little sprint handicap rather than a race packed with hidden depth, but that often makes Musselburgh’s sharp 5f all the more tactical. Right And Exact arrives off a win and has obvious claims from a handy low draw, while Tiva comes here after shaping encouragingly on his latest start and looks the type to strike soon. Miss Brazen is weighted to get involved again and Curious Rover has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. Low numbers could be a help if they break smartly, though this track can suit those able to travel strongly and grab a position early. It looks competitive enough, but not impossible to solve, and a couple make more appeal than the rest.

Top Selections

1. Right And Exact – 7/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Zak Wheatley | Trainer: Declan Carroll | Form: 122-81 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 82

Right And Exact makes plenty of appeal in a race where recent sharp sprint form should count for plenty. That latest win suggests he has come back to himself, and the overall profile is solid enough for this grade with figures that read better than most in the line-up. A draw in stall 2 looks a definite plus around here, especially for a horse who should be able to hold a prominent position without burning too much petrol. The Topspeed mark of 82 is the best on offer as well, which is not something I’m inclined to ignore in a race likely to be decided by fractions. At 7/2, he looks the percentage call.

Bet: WIN

2. Tiva – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: David O’Meara | Form: 108-52 | Rating: 91 | Topspeed: 66

Tiva is the each-way angle because there are signs he is building back towards a winning run, and David O’Meara’s sprinters are always worth respecting at Musselburgh. He ran well enough on his penultimate start and followed that with a second, which at least shows he is arriving here in decent nick after a patchy spell. The wide draw in 8 is not ideal over the minimum trip, so he may need Daniel Tudhope to be sharp from the gates, but this is a horse with the class to cope if things fall right. Off a mark of 91, he still has the ability to be very competitive, and 9/2 makes him an appealing each-way punt in an eight-runner race.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Right And Exact is the win play given his last-time-out success, strong speed figure and useful low draw. Tiva is the each-way alternative, especially if you want a horse with proven ability and a top jockey booked to overcome a tricky stall. Miss Brazen looks the main danger on current form, while Curious Rover is another who could easily hit the frame again without necessarily winning.

16:50 – Travis Perkins Scotland Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 6 | Going: GOOD | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary little 3yo handicap rather than a deep race, and the market has understandably latched on to the two last-time-out winners, Lope Y Linda and Mereside Princess. Both arrive with obvious claims and both look capable of another step forward at this level, so it may not take much winning. Royal Baroness is the one who makes it slightly less straightforward after a more encouraging reappearance, while Longevity is still lightly raced and open to some progress. The others have a bit more to prove on what they’ve shown so far. In a six-runner affair where tactics will matter, I’d rather side with the one who already owns the best topspeed figure and arrives here looking the most solid.

Top Selections

1. Lope Y Linda – 7/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Sean Kirrane | Trainer: Tim Easterby | Form: 55-541 | Rating: 61 | Topspeed: 53

Lope Y Linda makes the most appeal. She got off the mark last time and did it in the style of a filly who had found her level, and that form stacks up perfectly well in a race of this nature. An opening mark of 61 doesn’t look harsh given she owns the best topspeed figure in the field, and Easterby’s runners are always worth respecting around these northern tracks when they begin to click. Draw 5 is no disaster in a small field and she should get a clean run into things. At 7/4 she isn’t screaming value, but she still looks the one with the strongest overall claims. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Royal Baroness – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Aiden Brookes | Trainer: R Mike Smith | Form: 660-4 | Rating: 58 | Topspeed: 44

If you want to take on the obvious pair for a bit of value, Royal Baroness is the one I’d lean towards. Her comeback fourth was a definite step back in the right direction after ending last season quietly, and she now gets in here on 58 with only 127lb to carry. That makes her quite interesting against rivals higher in the weights, especially if this turns tactical and she can sit handy from stall 2. She still has to prove she can go and win one, but in a race lacking depth beyond the front two in the betting, 9/2 is fair enough for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Lope Y Linda is the win play in what looks a modest race for the grade, with her recent win and best topspeed figure giving her the edge. For those wanting a bit more juice, Royal Baroness appeals as the each-way alternative after a promising return. Mereside Princess is the obvious danger and is hard to leave out of calculations.
