The Ayr Gold Cup is the headline race of the weekend. That big handicap has attracted a massive field, but there is competitive racing at multiple meetings this Saturday.
GG tipster Joe Napier has our lucky 15 tips for the day. They race at the main two cards at Newbury and Ayr.
Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 19 September)
A pair of Group races headline the Newbury card on Saturday. We have two selections there, including in the opening Group 3 World Trophy.
1.02 Newbury – Redorange (1pt win – 4/1)
Starlust has been back in excellent form recently, but returning after just a six-day break from the Curragh might prove a tough ask against a stern rival in Redorange. Clive Cox’s charge has developed into a Group race sprinter this season. He won off a mark of 100 at Windsor, kicking clear decisively. His fourth at Listed level at Carlisle thereafter was a bit disappointing, but he then scored in that grade at York in July. Most recently, his trainer pitched him into the Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes back at York. He could not have been drawn worse, but still finished competitively despite trouble in running. He has three lengths to find on Starlust, but he has no such draw disadvantage here. Fresh from a 29-day break but still fit from the action, he can claim a first Group victory.
2.47 Newbury – Stem (1pt win – 17/2)
Racing back over 1m2f has helped to unlock the talent of Stem once again this summer. The Calyx gelding was slow to begin this season over 1m, though caught the eye having been outpaced by miles at Epsom, only to stay on very strongly far too late. Unsurprisingly, he picked up just as well over 1m2f at Sandown at the start of July winning for the first time since his debut. He only went back up 2lb for that victory, which still looks kind. The four-year-old was tailed off last in the Shergar Cup over 1m4f next time out, but then reverted to this intermediate distance when a close third back at Sandown. That looks a strong race and his mark is unchanged here. He ran really well on this card last season and a third career win awaits.
Ayr Racing Tips (Saturday 18 September)
For Gold Cup day at Ayr, two of our lucky 15 tips run at the feature meeting of the day.
1.55 Ayr – Fast Tracker (1pt win – 9/2)
Ice Max has shaped well over 1m2f since stepping up to the distance. However, Fast Tracker is preferred here after his effort at Goodwood at the end of last month. Previously trained in France, the son of Churchill won four times on the continent, including twice at Listed level. Those Listed successes were achieved by a combined distance of 13 lengths. When he is in the mood, he is clearly highly talented. His racing was exclusively on soft or heavy going in France, so it is no wonder connections waited until the rain fell for him to make his British debut. He ran a game race, finishing third to the impressive Zavateri in the Group 2 Celebration Mile. All of his best work came at the finish and he has twice won over 1m2f. That run should have done wonders for his fitness and he promises to be very competitive in this drop in class.
3.05 Ayr – Etonnante (1pt win – 8/1)
Silent Beauty has twice run well with cut in the going. That said, the Listed race she won last time out may prove to have been a gimme. She is taken on with Etonnante, who could still have more to offer for Karl Burke. A winner on debut at Ripon, she was pitched into one of the strongest juvenile races of the season on Newmarket’s July Course. She was well held by Senorita Bonita that day, but was not disgraced behind the subsequent Group 1 winner. The daughter of Havana Grey won on heavy ground in lesser climes earlier this month. That should put her spot on for this and she should be involved.
