There are five horse racing fixtures in the UK & Ireland on Wednesday 17 December, but the GG Lucky 15 selections for the day focus on two of them, as we head to Newbury and Ludlow for our best bets of the day.
Some decent jumping at both tracks on Wednesday, we pick out a brace of selections from each meeting and go through them meeting by meeting below.
Newbury Racing Tips (Wednesday 17 December 2025)
It’s an early start at Newbury with the action kicking off at 11.53am, but we opt to avoid the opening beginners’ chase and wait for later on in the afternoon for our selections.
1.58 Newbury – Lookaway (1pt win – 4/1)
A former runner-up in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury, Lookaway will be looking to go one better on Wednesday in the 1.58pm, but this time he will be seen competing over fences. He was last seen over hurdles at Uttoxeter, where he was having his first run in nearly a year and he ran well to finish third. Tiring in the closing stages, it’s interesting to see Neil King send him over fences for his second start of the year and off the same mark he looks capable of defying top weight in this event.
2.33 Newbury – Fine Casting (1pt win – 9/2)
Road To Home is a fascinating contender for Willie & Patrick Mullins in the 2.33pm contest, but the Irish raider will have to give weight away to all his rivals and he may struggle to down Ben Pauling’s Fine Casting, who can land the prize. The nine-year-old made an impressive return to the track at Bangor last month, where he was always doing enough, and he could be capable of continuing on an upward curve over the larger obstacles and land back-to-back wins. Given a 6lbs rise for that win, he takes his chance off 123 here, but he was rated in the low-130s at his best, so he certainly has potential to score again off this increased mark.
Ludlow Racing Tips (Wednesday 17 December 2025)
Seven races take place at Ludlow with four hurdle contests and a trio of chase races. Check out our best two bets on the card.
12.43 Ludlow – Lightning Flash (1pt win – 7/2)
A winner on his chasing debut at Chepstow, Lightning Flash has failed to kick on from that effort, as he was fourth at Wetherby on his second outing over fences, whilst he was a faller on his last visit to Ludlow. The tumble for the Nigel & Willy Twiston-Davies-trained runner came at the second last and he looked for all money like he’d get his head in front again. He’s been upped 1lb by the handicapper, so takes his chance off 112 here, but providing that hasn’t left any negative effect on him then he should be more than capable of bouncing back.
2.55 Ludlow – Followcato (1pt win – 4/1)
Having unseated at the second fence on his chasing debut, Followcato put in a clear round of jumping last time out at Lingfield and Ben Pauling’s charge should come on leaps and bounds for that effort. Looking to improve again in the 2.55pm at Ludlow, the six-year-old has been given a real chance by the handicapper as he was dropped 2lbs for that Lingfield run, so a mark of 111 here looks very attractive. He faded in the closing stages of that contest, so the drop back two furlongs on Wednesday should certainly aid his chances and he could well get his first chase victory in this trappy betting heat.
