Newbury & Warwick Racing Tips - GG Lucky 15 Tips for Saturday 7 February

Five racecourses go to post on Saturday, as Newbury and Warwick headline the action in Britain and Ireland. The William Hill Hurdle and Game Spirit Chase both look host intriguing fields this season, promising exciting renewals this weekend.

From the feature meetings of the day, Joe Napier gives our Lucky 15 best bets for a busy Saturday.

Newbury Racing Tips (Saturday 7 February)

Newbury boasts a deep card on Saturday, with our two selections coming away from the headline contests, with one of our tips racing in the opening contest.

1.00 Newbury – Fantasy World (1pt win – 11/4)

This is an interesting route to take for Fantasy World’s debut, but he is a very exciting hurdling recruit. The four-year-old was purchased on behalf of Lady Bamford to go into National Hunt training with Nicky Henderson, and for a pretty penny of 600,000gns. That could prove a worthy investment, as he won a 1m6f Listed race on his last flat start in October. That is high quality form and he has winning experience on soft and heavy ground too, which should set him up perfectly for this baptism of fire against two useful rivals in Sober Glory and Kadastral. His age entitles him to 22lb and 18lb concessions respectively from that pair and given he has a Triumph Hurdle entry, it would be no shock to see him make ready use of his allowances.

3.55 Newbury – Captain Bellamy (1pt win – 6/1)

With the Ditcheat team having hit form, Captain Bellamy can profit from what is still a low handicap mark. When winning his point-to-point and first bumper, much would have been expected of Paul Nicholls’ charge, though he is taking his time to prove it, finishing first past the post just once since, and subsequently being disqualified. That said, he has run some useful races, including when second over 2m6f at Newbury last time out. That came off a mark of 118 on good ground, but he saw out the distance well and has performed well on soft. He should prove a talented staying chaser based on his point form and can bely a 3lb higher rating here.

Warwick Racing Tips (Saturday 7 February)

Our lucky 15 tips at Warwick include one horse stepping into veterans’ company and another up to Listed level on Saturday.

2.25 Warwick – Grandeur d’Ame (1pt win – 9/2)

Ready preference is for Grandeur d’Ame, for whom conditions look ideal here. He enters veterans company for the first time as a ten-year-old, naturally becoming one of the sprightlier ones to contest such races, a theory which is supported by his runs this season. Firstly, he fell at the last when the closest challenger to Be Aware at Stratford in October before being a non-stayer over 3m2f in the Coral Gold Cup. He was then a perfectly respectable third to Matata on good ground when staying on late. However, his deficit of 12 lengths that day ensures he is down a further 2lb in the ratings to a mark of 132, his last winning one, and 4lb below the mark off which he was a short-head second at Cheltenham just over 12 months ago. He meets weaker opposition just as he may be about to hit peak form again and heavy ground will suit.

14:25 Unibet Middle Distance Series Veterans’ Handicap Chase (Series Qualifier)

3.00 Warwick – Dream Shadow (1pt win – 11/1)

If anything, this may not be quite enough of a stamina test for Dream Shadow. That said, where heavy ground could inconvenience some of her rivals, she has proven to revel in it and her collateral form with some of these comes over 2m, over which she was never quite at her best. She has been immensely consistent for Fergal O’Brien though, never finishing lower than third in seven rules starts. Indeed, she has upped her levels over obstacles, finishing a close second to a useful winner at Uttoxeter, then winning both races at a lower level since being upped in trip. This is harder, but she is going the right way to feature at this trip.
