Newcastle Racing Tips (Friday 27 March)
It is the final of the first set of Friday Night Live meetings at Newcastle on Friday. Matty has three best bets for you to follow during the evening.
6:00 Newcastle – SBK: No Casino Just Sports Handicap (Div I) (Class 5) (4yo+ 0-70) – Mayo County 16/1 0.5pt EW 3 places
A few of these arrive in excellent form here, not least the £100,000 All-Weather bonus winner Yorkshire Glory, but it may pay to side with the mare Mayo County, who returns from a 41 day break.
The daughter of Mayson saw her sole success come over course and distance this time last year and she backed that up on turf at Redcar in May. While she is 0-7 since, she’s posted some credible effort which suggests she’s well handicapped off this mark of 61. She was a length second to Goldmoyne over C&D in December giving him a pound, and that one is now rated 29lbs higher.
She gave Yorkshire Glory 8lbs there who was three lengths behind in third, and he’s now rated 14lbs higher. She was then a length third to Brazilian Rose in a 0-70 at Southwell, who’s now rated 15lbs higher. Yorkshire Glory then reversed the form with her over C&D last month, but she wasn’t seen to best effect by her track position there and she now has a 19lbs swing for that four-length defeat.
She also has a generous swing in the weights with Pit Boss from that latest effort, and returning from a small break on song then she’s too well handicapped to ignore on her recent collateral form.
6:30 Newcastle – SBK: No Casino Just Sports Handicap (Div II) (Class 5) (4yo+ 0-70) – D Flawless 10/1 1pt EW 3 places
Make Believe mare D Flawless was thought good enough to contest the Sandringham for the Gosden’s two seasons ago off 83, and she now finds herself rated 15lbs lower after five runs for Paul Midgley.
After returning from a 210-day layoff, she’s posted three credible efforts over five furlongs, with the standout run coming when a 3/4 length third Southwell in a 0-85, splitting horses rated 85 and 89.
It’s a small concern she couldn’t back up that run at Newcastle next time out when a well beaten sixth, but the form’s worked out well with the fifth and fourth winning since. Jason Hart retains the ride, and if a first time hood can keep her focused from the front then she’s entitled to go well, particularly if returning to that Southwell form.
7:00 Newcastle – SBK: Betting Without The Bull Handicap (Class 3) (4yo+ 0-90) – Twilight Calls 18/1 1pt EW 4 places
This looks set to be run at a strong gallop with several of the market principals preferring to race handily, and that could fall perfectly into the hands of Twilight Calls. The eight-year-old hasn’t won since April 2022 and is evidently a regressive sort, but he began last season on a mark of 104 and contested valuable races throughout the year.
His three length fifth in the Stewardds Cup when first home on his side of 14 suggests the fire still burns, and he’s now 15lbs below that effort, and 22lbs below his opening mark from last season.
He’s spent the early part of the year in Meydan and went close when a two length fifth to stablemate Run Boy Run, who was second next time out in Group 3 company.
His inability to win is an evident worry, but he drops into 0-90 company for the first time since July 2021 when winning at Newmarket off 5lbs higher, and a chance is taken he can capitalise on this lesser opposition with the race looking set to run to suit his patient style
