17:30 – Download The At The Races App Handicap

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This doesn’t look a deep Class 6 by any means, but it is the sort of small-field 3yo handicap where one with a bit more upside can quickly take control. Meritocratic is likely to head the market despite a modest three-run profile, while Pantile’s Gift brings the most solid recent effort after shaping well on return. Sovereign Bright has been knocking around in slightly better company and his profile suggests this trip should suit, so he’s very much on the shortlist too. At the other end, Due To Shine and Fuzeyya have bits of form that give them place squeaks, but both still need to prove they can finish the job. In truth, this looks a winnable race rather than a strong one, and improvement is likely to decide it.

Top Selections

1. Pantile’s Gift

Jockey: Hollie Doyle | Trainer: Jack Morland | Form: 7328-4 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 41

Pantile’s Gift makes plenty of appeal in a race where not many arrive with convincing recent substance. She returned from a break to finish fourth, and that effort suggested there should be a bit of progress to come now stepping on again. An opening mark of 72 asks a question, but it also makes her the joint topweight for a reason, and this doesn’t look a contest packed with hardened winners. Hollie Doyle is an eye-catching booking in a race likely to be tactical, and from stall 4 she should get a handy position. She looks the one with the most solid blend of current form and scope. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Sovereign Bright – 6/1 with William Hill

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 3735-3 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 48

Sovereign Bright is the each-way play because he’s already shown enough consistency to think he’ll be in the mix again, and the 6/1 with William Hill looks fair in a seven-runner race paying three places. His latest third was perfectly respectable, and the standout on his page is that Topspeed figure of 48, which is as good as anything on offer here. Charlie Johnston’s runners are often straightforward, and this one should be well served by a low draw in stall 2 if Jason Hart can keep him prominent. He doesn’t scream thrown in, but he does look reliable in a race where several rivals are still guessing. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Pantile’s Gift gets the nod as the win bet because she shaped like the one most likely to improve for her comeback and this is hardly a daunting handicap. Sovereign Bright is the sensible each-way option at 6/1, with his solid profile and strong speed figure making him hard to keep out of the first three. Meritocratic is the obvious danger if the market confidence proves right.

18:00 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a fairly ordinary Class 6 for three-year-olds, but it doesn’t lack for angles. Marra Donna brings the most persuasive recent form after a string of placed efforts and is the obvious one to beat if reproducing that level, while Cosmic Clarets is interesting on old juvenile form despite ending last season with a few duck eggs. Northern Tempest has room to do better for the Michael Dods yard, and low weights like Anorah Unleashed and Pivotal Terms could get involved if the race gets messy. It looks the type of 6f handicap where track position and a clean break will matter plenty. Not a deep race, but not one where you can blindly pile into the favourite either.

Top Selections

1. Marra Donna – 2/1 with Sky Bet

Jockey: Daniel Tudhope | Trainer: Ollie Sangster | Form: 9-3332 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 70

She’s the solid one in the line-up and, in a race full of unreliable types, that counts for plenty. Marra Donna has been knocking loudly on the door, finishing third three times before stepping forward again with a second last time, and that Topspeed figure of 70 is one of the standout pieces of evidence on offer here. An opening mark of 74 doesn’t look harsh given how consistent she has become, and Daniel Tudhope is an eye-catching booking in this grade. At 2/1 she isn’t exactly hidden, but she does look the runner with the fewest questions to answer and holds strong claims of finally getting her head in front.

Bet: WIN

2. Pivotal Terms – 50/1 with William Hill

Jockey: Andrew Mullen | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 37-876 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 71

This is very much a price play, but there’s enough in the profile to justify an each-way look at huge odds. Pivotal Terms has not advertised his chance in recent runs, yet he’s sliding in the weights and that Topspeed mark of 71 says he has shown more ability than his current form figures suggest. Drawn low in stall 2 and carrying just 125, he won’t need to improve dramatically to outrun a wildly dismissive 50/1 quote. Iain Jardine’s runner is not one for maximum faith, obviously, but in a race where several near the top of the market still have something to prove, he looks the value each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Marra Donna is the percentage call and makes most appeal as the win bet given her recent consistency and solid speed figure. For an each-way alternative, Pivotal Terms is overpriced and worth chancing at a big number with four places on offer. The main dangers are Cosmic Clarets, if bouncing back to early-season form, and Northern Tempest, who could easily take a step forward for the Dods team.

18:30 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Restricted Novice Stakes (For horses In Bands B, C And D) (GBB Race)

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a restricted novice in which one horse has already shown far more than the rest. Noelan Star sets a clear standard after winning on debut and bringing an official mark of 88 into a race where most of these are either modest, exposed at a low level or still guessing games. Horu Kanu and Viper appeal as the more credible dangers on what they achieved at two and on opening marks, while Record Day is another who could leave a low-key first run behind. After that, the likes of Billyjoegold, Balmoral Boy and Wee Dresser have plenty to find on the figures. It is not the deepest Class 5 novice you will see at Newcastle and, unless Noelan Star has stood still from two to three, this should revolve around him.

Top Selections

1. Noelan Star – 4/7 with Bet365

Jockey: Callum Rodriguez | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 1- | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 50

It is hard to get away from Noelan Star. He won first time up, returns with the standout rating in the field and represents a yard that places its youngsters sensibly. An 88 mark is miles clear of the usual restricted novice level and the Topspeed figure of 50 only underlines the point. Callum Rodriguez is an eye-catching booking for an Edward Bethell runner around here and, from stall 6, he should get a straightforward trip over this 7f. At odds-on you are not shopping for miracles, but he looks the horse with the fewest questions to answer and is very hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Horu Kanu – 15/2 with Betfair

Jockey: Shane Gray | Trainer: Richard & Peter Fahey | Form: 645- | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 32

If you want something at a more workable price, Horu Kanu makes plenty of each-way appeal. His three runs at two were not spectacular, but they were solid enough for this sort of race and his opening mark of 75 gives him a definite edge over many of these lesser lights. Drawn in stall 1, Shane Gray should be able to hold a handy position on the Tapeta, which often matters in these novice events when several are still learning. He does need to improve to get seriously involved with the favourite, but at 15/2 he looks the value option to hit the frame and possibly chase the market leader home. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Noelan Star is the obvious win play and the one they all have to beat. For an each-way punt, Horu Kanu looks the sensible alternative given his fair juvenile form and decent draw. Viper is the danger if improving from debut, while Record Day is another who could step forward, but this looks set up for the favourite to justify cramped odds.

19:00 – Free Tips Daily On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 3 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a proper Newcastle sprint handicap rather than a gift for punters, with plenty of hardened all-weather operators taking on one potentially progressive 4yo in Evening Saigon. He heads the market after a light campaign and is the obvious one to beat off a mark of 108, but this track can expose short-priced sprinters if the race gets tactical. Grant Wood arrives in form and is well berthed in stall 1, while Wicket Keeper also has solid recent AW figures and could get a lovely tow into it from a low draw. At bigger prices, Toyotomi is not one to dismiss for David O’Meara if bouncing back. It looks competitive rather than vintage, and getting the pace scenario right may be the key to solving it.

Top Selections

1. Evening Saigon – 9/4 with Betfair

Jockey: Callum Rodriguez | Trainer: Hamad Al Jehani | Form: 32/10- | Rating: 108 | Topspeed: 87

He makes plenty of appeal as the one runner in here who could still have a bit more to offer. The form figures are tidy, he signed off last time with a win, and although this is a deeper handicap than the sort of race he was contesting previously, he doesn’t look badly treated with just 9st1lb to carry despite his 108 mark. Stall 6 is fine, Callum Rodriguez is a positive booking, and there isn’t much guesswork about his suitability for Tapeta. At 9/4 he is no giveaway in a 10-runner sprint, but he is the one with the most convincing upside and looks the likeliest winner.

Bet: WIN

2. Grant Wood – 8/1 with Paddy Power

Jockey: Jason Hart | Trainer: Paul Midgley | Form: 90-114 | Rating: 107 | Topspeed: 93

He looks the value play if you want something at a more workable price. Midgley’s sprinters are often worth respecting around here and Grant Wood has been running well, winning twice before a perfectly fair fourth last time. The inside draw in stall 1 could be a real asset over this straight 6f if Jason Hart can hold a handy position without getting crowded, and his Topspeed figure of 93 tells you he still retains plenty of dash. He is up against some less exposed rivals, but 8/1 feels bigger than it should be for one arriving with solid current form and a track-and-trip style that should fit this race nicely.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Evening Saigon is the win play because he looks the most progressive horse in the field and has fewer questions than most. For an each-way punt, Grant Wood makes plenty of sense from stall 1 at 8/1. The main dangers are Wicket Keeper, who is weighted to be involved, and Toyotomi, who is dangerous if O’Meara has him tuned up for this return.

19:30 – Free Bets On attheraces.com Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 1m | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a fairly informative maiden for the track, even if it revolves around a couple with obvious claims. Eddaari sets the standard on what he achieved in three runs last year, and a mark of 91 gives him plenty to shout about if he returns tuned up. The wildcard is Roger Varian newcomer Far Far Out, who has been prominent in the market and clearly doesn’t need to be anything special to play a major hand first time out. Behind those, Showcasing Star brings the most solid exposed form after a pair of runner-up efforts, while Sovereign Bay has also shown enough to suggest he can be competitive. The rest look up against it on what they’ve done so far, so this feels more about class and potential than depth.

Top Selections

1. Eddaari – 8/5 with William Hill

Jockey: Harry Davies | Trainer: Simon & Ed Crisford | Form: 632- | Rating: 91 | Topspeed: 70

Eddaari is the one with the clearest body of useful form and, in a race where several are either limited or guessing games, that counts for plenty. He improved with racing in three starts last season, rounding off with a solid third, and that 91 rating is comfortably the best on offer here. The Crisford yard knows how to place one and Harry Davies is an eye-catching booking for this return. A mile on Tapeta should hold no fears given the way he shaped previously, and at 8/5 he is short enough without being prohibitive. He sets the standard and is hard to oppose if returning anywhere near ready. Bet type tag: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Showcasing Star – 22/1 with William Hill

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 22 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 65

Showcasing Star is the obvious each-way alternative because, unlike plenty of these, he has already shown he can run to a fair level twice. Two seconds from two starts is no bad profile for this sort of race, and an 84 rating leaves him firmly in the mix for minor honours at the very least. Charlie Johnston’s runners tend to be straightforward and genuine, which is no bad thing around Newcastle, and Connor Beasley is a positive booking at this venue. The presence of an unexposed favourite and a well-fancied debutant may have inflated his price, but 22/1 looks far too big for a colt with this much established form. Bet type tag: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Eddaari is the win bet because he brings the best form, the best rating and the least guesswork. For an each-way punt, Showcasing Star makes plenty of appeal at a big price given his pair of runner-up efforts. Far Far Out is the obvious danger on debut, while Sovereign Bay could also get involved if building on his two placed runs.

20:00 – Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a typical late-evening Newcastle mile handicap: not much between plenty of them on ratings, but a few arrive with more solid recent evidence than the rest. Barleybrown comes here after a respectable reappearance third and sets a fair standard in a race where several have been threatening without quite getting it done, notably Book Of Life and Lady Delila. Teggy Lasso is another with a recent placed effort and, as a 4yo, has a bit more scope than some of these exposed older handicappers. The Cookstown Cafu and Mercurius Power are capable of getting involved if bouncing back, but neither is bombproof. It is not a strong Class 6 by any means, but it is a trappy one where current sharpness and race position could prove decisive.

Top Selections

1. Barleybrown – 7/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Joanna Mason | Trainer: Ruth Carr | Form: 4744-3 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 59

Barleybrown makes most appeal in a race short on certainty. He returned with a solid third, which was exactly the sort of run you want to see from an exposed handicapper coming back to Newcastle, and his mark of 74 gives him every chance in this company. He has the best rating in the field alongside a profile that suggests he usually runs his race, and that counts for plenty at this level. Joanna Mason is a good booking for one likely to be ridden positively enough to hold a handy spot, and 7/2 looks fair rather than flashy in a contest where others have more to prove. Bet: WIN

2. Lady Delila – 16/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Cam Hardie | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 5-7332 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 56

Lady Delila is the each-way angle because she arrives in better nick than her double-figure price suggests. Her recent figures of 7332 tell their own story: she has been knocking firmly on the door, and from stall 1 she should get the sort of economical trip that matters over this mile on Tapeta. She is not obviously thrown in from 71, but she is running consistently enough to think she can hit the frame again, especially against rivals who are either out of form or fully exposed. Cam Hardie should be able to keep her out of trouble from the inside, and 16/1 is simply too big for a mare bringing this level of recent form. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Barleybrown is the percentage call for the win bet after a sound reappearance and looks the most solid option in an ordinary race. For each-way players, Lady Delila makes plenty of appeal at the prices given her recent consistency and handy draw. The obvious dangers are Teggy Lasso, who still has some upside as a 4yo, and the dependable Book Of Life if things drop right.

20:30 – Follow @AtTheRaces On Instagram Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a tight little 5f handicap rather than a race full of lurkers, with several of these arriving in decent enough nick but few absolutely screaming to be backed. Dc Cogent sets the standard on recent consistency and has the inside draw to help matters, while Darlo Pride comes here after shaping well and looks nicely weighted. The Paul Midgley trio add depth, especially Herakles, who has been knocking on the door, though none of them look bombproof. Blue Force is another with a workable profile from stall 1, but he has had his chances. In truth, this is the sort of sprint where track position and a clean break will count for plenty, so it is competitive rather than classy and definitely not one to get carried away in.

Top Selections

1. Dc Cogent – 10/3 with Betfair

Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Bryan Smart | Form: 42-364 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed: 63

He is not miles clear on the figures, but he is the one bringing the most reliable recent profile into the race and that matters in a low-grade sprint like this. His last four runs have all suggested he is holding his form well enough, and from stall 3 Paul Mulrennan should be able to get him into a handy rhythm without wasting ground. He is rated 83, so he does not have much in hand, but neither do his main market rivals. At around 10/3, he makes appeal as the likeliest winner rather than an exciting one, and this looks a fair opportunity if he breaks on terms. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Darlo Pride – 5/1 with William Hill

Jockey: Sean Kirrane | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: 4-8573 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed: 75

Darlo Pride is just the sort I like for an each-way play in this grade: exposed, yes, but still running well enough to suggest a race like this is within reach. His latest third was a step back in the right direction and his Topspeed mark of 75 is among the better numbers on show here. He is carrying less weight than the top of the market despite a rating of 84, and the Dods yard is more than capable of placing one to good effect in these northern Tapeta sprints. The wide draw is not ideal, but if Sean Kirrane can tuck in early, 5/1 looks a solid each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Dc Cogent is the straight win play because he looks the safest option in a race lacking standout quality. Darlo Pride makes more appeal as the each-way alternative at 5/1, with enough recent encouragement to think he hits the frame at least. The main danger is Herakles, who has been threatening to land one of these, while Blue Force is not dismissed from the inside stall.
