17:30 – Follow @AtTheRaces On X Apprentice Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary but still competitive Class 6 sprint, with plenty of exposed types and only a couple arriving with any real momentum. Sedgemoor is the obvious one to beat after a tidy win last time and he’s drawn well enough to attack again, but he’s short enough in a race where a few others have bits and pieces in their favour. Asadjumeirah has been knocking on the door in stronger company than this and his best speed figures make him interesting, while The Gay Blade and Fircombe Hall both have recent winning form even if wider draws ask a question. Gimmieminnie is another who could step forward from a promising return. It’s not a deep race, but it is the sort of sprint where track position and pace will matter plenty.

Top Selections

1. Sedgemoor – 2/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Jack Nicholls | Trainer: John Ryan | Form: 80-141 | Rating: 67 | Topspeed: 50

He is hard to get away from after getting back on the scoresheet last time, and that form string of 80-141 suggests a horse who has found his level and is thriving for this yard. An official mark of 67 leaves him at the head of this on ratings, and while this is no giveaway from stall 8, he does bring the most obvious recent profile into the race. John Ryan also saddles World Of Darcy, but Sedgemoor is clearly the stable first string on form. At 2/1 he is no hidden gem, but in a weakish apprentice handicap he still looks the percentage call. Bet: WIN

2. Asadjumeirah – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Ethan Tindall | Trainer: Antony Brittain | Form: 326654 | Rating: 64 | Topspeed: 58

He’s the each-way value play in a race lacking depth. The recent form figures don’t scream winner, but they do show consistency and his Topspeed of 58 is the best in the field, which matters in these low-grade 6f events at Newcastle. He’s slipped to a workable mark of 64, has a fair draw in 6, and Antony Brittain’s sprinters often pop up when the market underestimates them. Ethan Tindall knows these northern all-weather handicaps well enough, and this looks a realistic opening. Available at 11/2, he makes plenty of appeal as the one most likely to chase the favourite home, if not turn him over. Bet: EACH-WAY

Danger: The Gay Blade has recent winning form and is not easily dismissed despite a tricky draw in 11.

Betting Strategy

Sedgemoor is the solid win play after his latest success and makes most appeal as the likeliest winner. For a bit more value, Asadjumeirah is the each-way punt given his strong speed figure and consistent level in similar races. The Gay Blade and Fircombe Hall are the obvious dangers, but both may need things to fall right from wide stalls.

18:00 – Download The At The Races App Handicap

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a tight little six-runner handicap rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably latched on to the three unexposed 4yos at the top of the weights. Analogical brings the steadiest profile after back-to-back runner-up efforts and shapes like this trip on Tapeta is right in his lane, while Mao Shang Wong has already won twice this year and is dangerous if forgiving a below-par latest effort. Patrol is the awkward one: still capable of better for Dylan Cunha, but he needs to leave that reappearance behind. Clansman is the solid older hand in the field and arrives in good nick, though the handicapper isn’t exactly giving him much room. In truth, this is a race where tactical positioning and who settles best over the trip could decide it.

Top Selections

1. Analogical – 9/4 with Bet365

Jockey: Luke Morris | Trainer: Sir Mark Prescott Bt | Form: 215-22 | Rating: 90 | Topspeed: 82

He makes plenty of appeal in a race lacking depth. Analogical has done little wrong in two starts this year, finishing second on both occasions, and that profile suggests there is still a bit to come now he is settling into handicaps properly. A mark of 90 is no giveaway, but his Topspeed figure of 82 is the best on offer here and that matters in a race where a lot of these are closely matched on official ratings. Prescott and Morris are never a combination to underestimate in staying handicaps, and at 9/4 he looks the runner with the fewest questions to answer. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Clansman – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Billy Garritty | Trainer: Liam Bailey | Form: 0-3213 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 80

If you want something at a fairer price, Clansman looks the each-way angle. The veteran is in better heart than plenty of younger rivals, having posted figures of 3213 in his last four completed starts, and that latest third showed he remains competitive from this sort of mark. He is only 2lb lower than Analogical and his Topspeed of 80 says he is not far off the standard required. In a six-runner race you do need things to fall right, but he is reliable, race-fit and likely to give you a run for your money. At 5/1, he makes plenty of each-way appeal. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Analogical is the percentage call and looks the strongest win bet given his consistency, speed figure and the likelihood that this trip suits well. For an each-way punt, Clansman is the value play if the principals underperform. Mao Shang Wong is the obvious danger if bouncing back from his last run, while Patrol is harder to trust after an underwhelming return.

18:30 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Restricted Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (Bands C and D) (GBB Race)

Race Details: 1m | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This doesn’t look a deep maiden, but it is a slightly awkward one because the market principals bring different types of appeal. Ziata sets the standard on what she achieved at two, with a mark of 69 and placed form already in the book, while Mimi’s Magic isn’t far behind on figures and at least has race experience over the trip. The unknowns are headed by the well-bred newcomers Bintaziza and Astrid, both from yards that know exactly what is required in this sort of restricted event. Clocker has shown enough to suggest she can get involved as well. In truth, the exposed older fillies look up against it, and this should come down to whether proven juvenile form can fend off a couple of potentially useful debutantes.

Top Selections

1. Ziata – 9/4 with Betfair

Jockey: George Downing | Trainer: Ed Walker | Form: 43- | Rating: 69 | Topspeed:

Ziata is the one with the clearest credentials and, in a race where several are guessing games, that counts for plenty. She showed ability in both starts as a juvenile, finishing fourth and then third, and her 69 rating gives her a solid edge over the exposed runners here. This step up to a mile on Tapeta looks a sensible move rather than a reach, and Ed Walker’s fillies usually know their job. She doesn’t need to improve dramatically to take this if returning in the same nick, and 9/4 is fair enough in a race lacking much depth. Bet: WIN

2. Clocker – 7/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Edward Bethell | Form: 56- | Rating: 57 | Topspeed:

Clocker strikes me as the each-way value if you want to take on the more obvious fillies at the top of the market. Her two runs at two were better than they look at a glance, and a mark of 57 gives her a realistic platform in this grade. Edward Bethell is more than capable of placing one to good effect, while Kevin Stott is a positive booking for this surface. She has a bit to find with Ziata on ratings, but she’s not exposed over this mile yet and 7/1 looks big enough in a 12-runner restricted maiden where some of the shorter-priced newcomers still have to do it on the track. Bet: EACH-WAY

Danger: Bintaziza is the obvious threat if the Roger Varian newcomer is ready to go first time.

Betting Strategy

Keep it straightforward: Ziata is the win play because she brings the strongest established form and the best rating into a modest contest. Clocker makes more appeal as the each-way punt at the prices, with enough promise in her juvenile runs to think she can hit the frame. The main danger is Bintaziza, while Astrid and Mimi’s Magic also need respecting.

19:00 – attheraces.com/marketmovers Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)

Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This looks a fairly ordinary maiden on paper rather than a future-pattern-race production line, but it does revolve around a couple with solid enough claims. Gouken sets the standard on last season’s form after a string of placed efforts and is the obvious one to beat if returning in the same nick, while Nebulon shaped with promise when runner-up on his reappearance and looks the one most likely to make the market leader work. Kilfrush Desert also has a say after making the frame on debut, and he’s open to improvement after time away. Behind them, the older pair Lindoro and April Diamond don’t bring much upside for this sort of contest, so this feels like a race where the 3yos should dominate and straightforward progression may prove decisive.

Top Selections

1. Gouken – 5/4 with Betfair

Jockey: George Downing | Trainer: Ed Walker | Form: 33223- | Rating: 79 | Topspeed:

Gouken is no hidden gem after five defeats, but he has easily the most convincing body of form in the field and a mark of 79 tells its own story in this company. He kept bumping into one or two too good last year without ever running a bad race, and that consistency should count for plenty in a maiden like this. The slight concern is whether he’s vulnerable to something less exposed, but Newcastle’s straight 6f should suit a professional type who knows his job. At around 5/4 he is hardly a giveaway, yet he is still hard to oppose on what we’ve seen. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Kilfrush Desert – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Kevin Stott | Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Form: 3- | Rating: | Topspeed:

Kilfrush Desert makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where the favourite is solid rather than bombproof. He shaped nicely when third on debut, which is often a sign of a colt with a bit of ability and plenty more to come once he learns on the job. Kevin Ryan’s runners at this level are usually well enough schooled, and Kevin Stott is a positive booking for a horse drawn low enough to get a good tow into the race. He does need to step forward from that first effort, but that is exactly what lightly raced 3yos are supposed to do. At 9/2, he looks the value alternative. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple here. Gouken is the percentage call and makes most appeal as the win bet because he brings the strongest, most reliable form into the race. For an each-way punt, Kilfrush Desert is the one at a fairer price given his debut promise and likely improvement. Nebulon is the obvious danger if building on that recent second, so he’s the one to fear most.

19:30 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap

Race Details: 5f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a proper low-grade 3yo sprint handicap rather than a race packed with certainty, and that usually means draw, sharpness and track position will matter plenty over Newcastle’s bare 5f. Enter Sandman sets the standard on recent placed efforts and has the inside stall, which is an obvious asset if he breaks on terms. O Fortuna shaped better than the bare result on reappearance and remains lightly exposed, while Territorial Star brings solid juvenile handicap form but has to concede weight all round. There are a few with bits and pieces of claims, including Fille Unique and Jane Of The Jungle, but this doesn’t look a deep race. It’s more a matter of siding with the one most likely to travel strongly and get the fractions right.

Top Selections

1. Enter Sandman – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: George Wood | Trainer: Richard Spencer | Form: 66-433 | Rating: 72 | Topspeed: 66

He looks the percentage call. Those last three runs, all finishing in the first three, read well enough in the context of a race like this and his Topspeed figure of 66 is the best on offer alongside Jane Of The Jungle. The draw in stall 1 could be a major help around here if George Wood can hold a handy position early, and this mark of 72 is hardly punitive judged on the consistency he’s been showing. At 3/1 he’s not hiding from the market, but he is the one arriving with the clearest and most reliable recent profile. In a race full of guesswork elsewhere, he makes plenty of appeal. Bet type: win.

Bet: WIN

2. Jane Of The Jungle – 11/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Taryn Langley | Trainer: Scott Dixon | Form: 80-526 | Rating: 71 | Topspeed: 66

She’s the each-way play at the prices. The recent form is a little mixed, but that second two starts back showed she can be competitive from this sort of mark, and matching the top Topspeed figure in the field gives her a stronger chance than the market may be granting. Scott Dixon’s runners can pop up in these sprint handicaps when dismissed, and she gets in here off just 127, which is no bad thing against some more exposed rivals carrying bigger weights. Stall 8 is not ideal, but over this trip one good break can change the complexion quickly. At 11/1, she looks the value each-way punt in an ordinary contest.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Enter Sandman is the win bet, with his recent consistency and ideal inside draw making him hard to oppose in a weak Class 6. For an each-way alternative, Jane Of The Jungle appeals at double-figure odds on her best figures. The main dangers look to be O Fortuna, who has scope after her reappearance, and topweight Territorial Star if class carries him through.

20:00 – Free Tips Daily On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 5 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a proper Newcastle handicap puzzle rather than a race full of obvious answers. Anthropologist arrives on the back of a win and is rightly towards the head of the market, while Criminal Shore has been knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. Lord Capulet is another with a solid profile, especially if forgiven a lesser effort last time after a productive spell beforehand. There are plenty with each-way possibilities too, from the dependable Call Me Betty to old specialist Bobby Joe Leg, and the draw adds another layer with several fancied runners berthed low. In a 14-runner 7f handicap on Tapeta, track position and timing matter, but recent momentum usually counts for plenty as well.

Top Selections

1. Anthropologist – 4/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Dylan Hogan | Trainer: Michael Herrington | Form: -66421 | Rating: 88 | Topspeed: 68

He makes plenty of appeal after finally cashing in on a run of steadily improving efforts. That latest win came off the back of a good second, so the form figures suggest a horse who has found his groove rather than one who merely popped up out of the blue. Stall 4 looks handy in a race where being drawn low could help, and Dylan Hogan knows how to deliver one late on this surface. Off 88, he is not thrown in, but 4/1 with Bet365 still feels fair in a race lacking a standout improver. He holds the strongest all-round claims.

Bet: WIN

2. Call Me Betty – 11/1 with Betfair

Jockey: Connor Beasley | Trainer: Michael Dods | Form: 23216- | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 62

Call Me Betty is the one who appeals most as an each-way play because her profile is a lot more solid than an 11/1 quote might suggest. She ended last season with form figures that included plenty of consistency before a lesser final run, and a mark of 82 gives her room to be competitive in this grade if returning in similar heart. Connor Beasley is a positive booking around here and she is the sort who can travel into the race strongly over 7f. In a contest where several are weighted to the hilt, she looks the value option for a place at the very least.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Anthropologist is the win bet after arriving here in winning form and with a nice low draw to work from. For an each-way punt, Call Me Betty looks overpriced at double-figure odds in a race where consistency should count for plenty. Criminal Shore and Lord Capulet are the obvious dangers, with the former especially likely to be thereabouts again.

20:30 – Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat

This is a very ordinary Class 6 mile but that does not mean it is straightforward. Plenty arrive with bits and pieces of form that give them a squeak, though not many are exactly charging through the line. Esque Elegance has been knocking on the door from a good inside draw, Starshot brings solid recent placed form, while Teggy Lasso is another who has been running well enough to win one of these. Pebble Dash is interesting despite being posted widest of all, and Cloch Nua is the sort who can easily bounce back if getting the right tow into it. In truth, this looks more of a messy handicap than a race packed with authority, so draw, pace and who handles the late pressure best should decide it.

Top Selections

1. Esque Elegance – 6/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Conor Whiteley | Trainer: Stephen Hanlon | Form: 432266 | Rating: 66 | Topspeed: 57

Esque Elegance is not getting his head in front, but he is giving himself every chance in races of this nature and this looks a workable opening. The recent sequence says reliable more than disappointing, and that topspeed figure of 57 is among the better numbers on offer in a race lacking depth. Stall 1 is a plus around here if he can hold a handy position, and this mark of 66 leaves him right in the argument. At 6/1 with Bet365, he appeals as the percentage call in a race where several of the market principals have their own quirks and excuses. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Pebble Dash – 9/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Rowan Scott | Trainer: Gary Harrison | Form: -96424 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 56

Pebble Dash looks the each-way play because the recent profile is actually pretty solid for this grade. He has finished second and fourth on his last two starts, arrives in better nick than plenty of these, and his topspeed mark of 56 says he has enough ability to be right there if things fall kindly. The wide draw in 14 is the obvious concern over a mile, but he does at least come here in form, which is more than can be said for a fair few rivals. With four places on offer, 9/1 with Bet365 makes him a sensible each-way punt in a race where consistency counts for plenty. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Esque Elegance is the win bet from the inside draw, with his recent consistency and solid speed figure making him the safest option in a shaky race. Pebble Dash is the each-way alternative at the bigger price, especially with four places available. Main dangers are Starshot, who is edging back toward a win, and Teggy Lasso, who has been shaping as though this sort of race is within reach.
