Andrew Mount is here with his best horse racing bets for Tuesday 16 December, as he heads to Newcastle and Wincanton for his selections.
Today’s cards feature plenty of competitive action with some tough puzzles on offer for punters looking to bag a few winners.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Tuesday 16 December 2025)
Nine races make up Newcastle’s all-weather fixture on Tuesday with the action getting under way at 3.12pm and it’s that opening contest that Andrew’s best bet runs in.
3.12 Newcastle – Weddell Sea (1pt e/w – 7/1 Sky Bet, four places, 15-2 generally elsewhere but only three places)
Weddell Sea, a 19-race maiden on turf (Flat only), has won two of his 11 starts on synthetic surfaces and has a solid record here at Newcastle, recording form figures of 22118022 (2-8). Those figures improve to 221122 (2-6) in today’s Class 5 grade and his latest runner-up effort has been franked by odds-on winner Hatysa who followed up in Class 4 company at Southwell. Mike Sowersby’s seven-year-old was only sixth of ten at Southwell last time but that was in a Class 4 contest, he clocked a good time despite the five-length margin if defeat and he returns to his ideal conditions now.
Wincanton Racing Tips (Tuesday 16 December 2025)
On the contrary, you have to wait for the final race of Wincanton’s National Hunt card for Andrew’s jumps selection for the day, as he looks to bag a winner in the 3.30pm contest.
3.30 Wincanton – Phoenix Risen (1pt e/w – 6/1 bet365, 11/2 generally)
Jeremy Scott took a while to hit form this season and most of his runners have been improving significantly for their initial outing, most notably Champion Hurdle winner Golden Ace who went from a 28-length last of two (4-11 favourite) in Listed company at Wetherby on November 1st to a 22-1 Grade 1 success in the Fighting Fifth at Newcastle 28 days later. Since October 1st, the trainer is four from 20 with horses that had the benefit of a recent outing (within the past six weeks) for a profit of £39.00 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 1.91, A/E = 2.09). Five of the beaten horses finished second (14-1, 13-2, 5-1, 5-1 and 3-1), two were third (4-1 and 2-1) and three more finished fourth (50-1, 10-1 and 9-2). Today, it is the turn of Phoenix Risen, winner of this 1m7f handicap hurdle 12 months ago. The eight-year-old shaped well at Exeter on last month’s return to action, running third of 17 in a 2m handicap hurdle. That form has received a couple of boosts – the sixth won next time out and winner Haas Boy finished a solid second off a 5lb higher mark behind a progressive sort at Huntingdon – and his victory in this race last year came on his second start of the campaign.
