More extreme weather is expected to hit the UK as we head towards the weekend, but two all-weather fixtures that will be hoping to provide some horse racing on Friday 9 January will be Newcastle and Wolverhampton.
Wolverhampton will play host to the first Friday Night Live, which will be live on ITV Racing, whilst Newcastle also host some competitive action. We pick out our GG Lucky 15 tips for the action on Friday, and look to point you in the right direction of a few winners.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Friday 9 January 2026)
There’s a seven race card at Newcastle, which kicks off at 1.27pm and ends at 4.35pm. Some competitive low-level action will light up the north east venue and we have two selections for the afternoon fixture.
1.27 Newcastle – Cardinal Point (1pt win – 6/4)
Michael Bell’s Cardinal Point has been a real model of consistency in recent times and has failed to be out of the top three in her last nine runs. With two victories in that time the Dubawi filly will be looking to taste more success on Friday when running in the 1.27pm at Newcastle. She was a beaten favourite at Chelmsford last time out, where she was beaten over six lengths, but she did pull 10 lengths clear of the third placed finisher that day, so she likely just bumped into a rapid improver. Running off the same mark of 67 here, she has the potential make her presence felt at this level once again and is the solid pick.
2.27 Newcastle – Trust No One (1pt win – 9/2)
There’s a pretty mediocre contest at 2.27pm with six going to post for the 1m 2f 42y contest, and it’s hard to not land on Onyeisi, who was a winner two starts ago, but he was beaten off a new mark of 60 last time out, so could be worth taking on. Lemos Souza’s Trust No One is still a maiden after six starts, but he’s been given a huge chance by the handicapper, as he takes his chance off a figure of 50. Third at Southwell off a mark of 55 a few starts ago, he will also have Taryn Langley taking 5lbs off his back as well, so he has his best chance of winning in what is a very winnable contest.
Wolverhampton Racing Tips (Friday 9 January 2026)
A whopping nine races take place at Wolverhampton between 4.25pm and 8.30pm with the last seven contests being shown live on ITV. We wait until the action kicks off on terrestrial television and pick out our two best bets.
6.30 Wolverhampton – Best Rate (1pt win – 8/1)
Richard Hannon’s Best Rate hasn’t tasted victory since November 2024, where that victory came at Wolverhampton, but a return to that same venue on Friday for the 6.30pm race could see him return to winning ways. Throughout the last 12 months he’s be a performer that has been challenging for victory, but has just found a few too good at the business end of the contest. He lines up off a workable mark of 84 for this competitive event, and it could just be the return to Wolves than can bring on that improvement needed to land the prize.
7.00 Wolverhampton – Star Of Mali (1pt win – 7/2)
James Tate failed to land back-to-back wins with Star Of Mali last time out at Southwell, but the son of star sprinter Sands Of Mali is certainly worth keeping on the right side of in the 7.00pm contest. Upped 3lbs for that win at Southwell two outings ago, he found himself not ideally placed at the crucial stage of his last outing, so off the same mark of 73 on Friday he has to be given a huge chance. The Caribbean and Revolutionise both line up on the back of victories in their last runs, so have to be given a second look, but Star Of Mali is the solid selection.
