There are seven meetings to enjoy this Saturday, with the all-weather and turf coming to the fore on ITV Racing. Even a week after Royal Ascot, there is competitive action at numerous tracks this weekend.
Matty Sutcliffe has scanned the Saturday racecards. He has four tips to follow for the ITV action across Newcastle and York.
Newcastle Racing Tips (Saturday 27 June 2026)
The Northumberland Plate is one of Newcastle’s most prized races. Matty has a tip for the marathon handicap, as well as one other on the card.
13:40 Newcastle – Education Network Handicap (Class 2) (3yo+ 0-105) – Sir Albert 12/1 1pt EW 4 places
Sir Albert hasn’t quite built on the promise he showed as a two year old last season, which included winning a Goodwood Festival Nursery before placing in the listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster.
However, he proved to a degree he’d trained on when beaten a length in the Listed Spring Cup Stakes at Lingfield, finishing close up behind a subsequent winner in Ten Cat Harry who was hired in the Palace Of Holyroodhouse Stakes last week.
He’s been dropped 8lbs since then, having failed to stay the mile on firm going at Carlisle on turf seasonal debut and he caught the eye in rear when a tenderly handled eighth at Chester. Given he was a winner here last season, that smacked as a prep for this £25,770 prize for a yard who won this in 2021 with a three-year-old.
15:15 Newcastle – Jenningsbet Northumberland Plate Handicap (Heritage Handicap) (GBBPlus Race) (Class 2) (3yo+) – Saint Etienne 12/1 1pt EW 5 places
Brian Ellison won this with Onesmoothoperator in 2024 and this looks to have been the plan with Saint Etienne, who has been dropped 10lbs since joining from France. The son of Le Havre switched hands for £100,000 last July, and has caught the eye in rear on a couple of occasions.
He was down the field in his first two starts, but he caught the eye making good headway at York two starts ago, staying on well behind a runaway winner. The second and sixth there ran an excellent race in the Copper Horse Handicap last week.
He was again in rear when dropped in trip to ten furlongs, and I suspect now stepping up to two miles he can leave that form behind and show up well for a yard who’s certain to have targeted this.
York Racing Tips (Saturday 27 June 2026)
York’s card features Group race action, but Matty sticks to two handicaps for his best bets on the Knavesmire for Saturday.
13:55 York – Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Mile Handicap (Class 3) (3yo+ 0-90) – Zennor Storm 5/1 1pt WIN
Zennor Storm requires a leap of faith to back on this season’s turf form, but William Haggas is a master of improving one when taking it to York as he was with Archivist in this race last season, who was also a maiden on turf.
Haggas has a 19% all time strike rate in course handicaps and is three from eight here so far this season, and you’d have to suspect Zennor Storm can prove a touch better than a mark of 87 now returning from a gelding operation.
He was two from two as a two year old at the back end of last season, including carrying a penalty to win in good style at Kempton, finishing off strongly having taking a while to gather momentum.
His dam was a turf winner and he’s a half brother to one who improved for a gelding operation as well who peaked at a mark of 94, and he can put his three year old allowances to good use here.
14:25 York – Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dash Handicap (Class 2) (3yo 0-100) – Schrodinger’s Cat 8/1 1pt EW 4 places
Schrodinger’s Cat got off the mark for the season in excellent style after knocking on the door in defeat. He was a length second to subsequent Listed runner up Simplify on seasonal debut, weakening late on having raced keenly without cover from the front.
He caught the eye when dropped in for cover at Chester next time out, second again, staying on late to a well-positioned winner. He ran creditably from rear when midfield here, before an excellent third returning to prominent tactics here, giving 13lbs to the winner and 19lbs to the second.
His Redcar win was admittedly in easier company, but it was authoritative nonetheless and while he’s 8lbs higher this time around, a similar performance could see him tough to pass from a favourable low draw.
