Andrew Mount focuses his attentions on day one of Newmarket’s July Festival and he has a brace of tips for the action at Flat HQ on Thursday 9th July. He also has a solitary selection at Leopardstown to complete his three tips for the day.
Newmarket Racing Tips (Thursday 9 July 2026)
Seven races take place at Newmarket, with a 1.50pm start. Andrew looks to hit the ground running with a big-priced pick in the Bahrain Trophy, whilst he has a 50/1 pick in the 3.00pm.
1.50 Newmarket – Alderman (1pt win – 17-2 Paddy Power, 8-1 Sky Bet, William Hill)
Since 2015 (11 renewals), runners who prepped over 1m5f or further are just one from 24 in the Bahrain Trophy and I’m going to ignore those who contested the Queen’s Vase (1m6f) at Royal Ascot last time and instead side with Derby fifth Alderman. I went for Richard Hannon’s maiden in the big race at Epsom and it was agonising to see him just miss out on fourth place by a short head (100-1 from 200-1). The further step up in trip will suit.
3.00 Newmarket – Mo Of Cairo (1pt e/w – 50/1 William Hill, Ladbrokes, BetVictor)
Since 2015, all 11 winners of this 6f heritage handicap for three-year-olds had finished in the top five in their prep race and backing all 112 qualifiers returned a profit of £36.50 to a £1 level stake at SP. Nine of thos3e made the running or raced prominently when taking this race (hold up horses were just two from 54, +£38.00 at SP) and that makes Kevin Ryan’s Mo Of Cairo interesting at a massive price. The Havana Grey colt went close at York’s Ebor meeting on his sole nursery start last year, going down by a head in second when 22-1 in a field of 19 and has been running with credit without winning in handicap company this term. His latest Windsor fourth was especially eye-catching as he was rushed up to lead on the ‘dead’ rail after missing the break in a race set up for those who challenged late/wide. He was ridden patiently when sixth of 14 at both Thirsk and Hamilton in his two other runs this tern but he was prominent when going close at York and a similar ride could be just the ticket.
Leopardstown Racing Tips (Thursday 9 July 2026)
There’s a decent evening fixture at Leopardstown in Ireland, where Andrew has a solitary pick in the 7.03pm race.
7.03 Leopardstown – Harana (1pt win – 15/2 bet365, 7-1 generally)
Harana clocked a fast time for the grade when bolting up in the 9.5f maiden at Ballinrobe last month, scoring by three and a half lengths from main market rival Mano Chicago with Western Bandit a massive 11 lengths back in third. It’s taken a while for the penny to drop for the daughter of Ghaiyyath – that was her fourth start – and there could be plenty more to come on fast ground this summer. The handicapper has shoved her up 9lb toa mark of 81 but that could still be on the lenient side.
