Newmarket Racing Tips (Thursday 16 April 2026)
Getting under way at 1.50pm, the seven races at Newmarket are sure to throw up some star performances. The Group 3 Abernant Stakes and Group 3 Craven Stakes are the two feature races on the card.
1.50 Newmarket – Treanmor (1pt win – 4/1)
Charlie Appleby and William Buick have already had plenty of success this week at Newmarket, and the pair can continue that fine record with victory in the opening race on Thursday at 1.50pm. They will team up with Godolphin’s Treanmor, who can kick off his campaign with a win. He was a winner at Newmarket on debut last May, so has shown he can deliver first time out. Fifth in the Chesham Stakes at Royal Ascot, his last two starts came in Meydan, where he failed to get his head in front. However, back to calmer waters at Newmarket, the Frankel gelding will relish a return to British soil, and having won over course and distance can dominate this handicap opener.
3.00 Newmarket – Washington Heights (1pt win – 9/1)
Commonwealth Cup winner Time For Sandals is certainly the one to beat in the Abernant Stakes. However, the Group 1 winner is likely to use the 3.00pm contest as a stepping stone to bigger sprint events later in the season. One that could well down that raider is Kevin Ryan’s Washington Heights. A winner of this race in 2024, the eight-year-old showed when winning the City Walls Stakes at York that he’s a class act on his day. Often producing his best display first time out, he comes into this event fresh and with a fine course record can go very close at an attractive price.
3.35 Newmarket – Avicenna (1pt win – 5/1)
A tremendous renewal of the Craven Stakes at 3.35pm sees a number of exciting three-year-olds line up. Hawk Mountain sets the standard for Aidan O’Brien, whilst Charlie Appleby’s Hidden Force is another that could turn into a genuine Classic contender. However, Roger Varian’s Avicenna makes the most appeal in an intriguing contest. The son of Starspangledbanner is two wins from two starts, and was last seen beating Hankelow in the Listed Flying Scotsman Stakes at Doncaster. Now set for his seasonal reappearance, he will need to improve again against better opposition. However, he’s shaped like a really classy colt and can maintain his perfect record here.
4.45 Newmarket – Amadeus Mozart (1pt win – 13/8)
Godolphin and Coolmore do battle in the novice stakes at 4.45pm with the former looking towards Maho Bay and the latter unleashing Amadeus Mozart. Both unbeaten, they could both prove to be decent three-year-olds this season. Aidan O’Brien’s Amadeus Mozart is the way to go, as the son of Wootton Bassett bids for a second in two starts. A maiden winner back in June, he got the better of stablemate Dorset that day, and that rival went on and claimed Group 3 glory. With the form franked, Amadeus Mozart, who holds a Derby entry, can book his place in the Epsom Classic with victory here.
