The Craven meeting a Newmarket dominates the midweek racing action. The flat season is now well underway on turf, with the build-up to the 2000 Guineas meeting intensifying.
GG tipster Joe Napier picks out our Lucky 15 best bets for Wednesday’s card, all of them running on the Rowley Mile.
Newmarket Racing Tips (Wednesday 15 April)
Newmarket’s Craven meeting continues into its second day on Wednesday. On a card featuring the Nell Gwyn Stakes, a recognised 1000 Guineas trial, all four of our Lucky 15 tips race at the track.
1.50 Newmarket – Double Rush (1pt win – 7/2)
A winner of a three-year-olds’ handicap at this meeting 12 months ago, Double Rush can win here again. The son of Blue Point was a well-supported winner off a mark of 85 here last season. He subsequently placed in two hot 18 and 14-runner handicaps at York and Hamilton respectively in the summer. He then disappointed at Ascot when last seen, but is back down to a mark of 90 for this race. That is the rating off which he was placed twice last term and we know he likes this track and trip. He has switched to Andrew Balding during the off-season. However, the change of yards should not do him any harm and could even bring about further improvement. He looks to have rock solid claims, as he also goes well fresh.
2.25 Newmarket – Wareeth (1pt win – 7/2)
Any outcome is possible for Wareeth here, but any horse who wins by 14 lengths on debut needs taking seriously. He was fortunate that his main rival was pulled up early with a muscle injury. However, he still had a decent rival to take care of, which he did with aplomb. That runner-up has since gone on to be beaten just a length next time out, so the form was far from a formality. Being by Sea The Stars, the extra furlong he tackles here should be no barrier. He is fancied to go close taking a big step up in class, as there does not appear to be a superstar among his rivals.
3.00 Newmarket – Boiling Point (1pt win – 10/3)
Cambridgeshire winner Boiling Point secured that big-field handicap off top-weight and can break through at Group level. The five-year-old won that race off 109, having finished a head second in York’s Group 3 Strensall Stakes the race before. He is a former Listed winner too, winning at that level at this track in May 2024. His Rowley Mile record now reads 2211, so he evidently likes it here. He also has a run under his belt, finishing fourth in the Winter Derby at Lingfield, which would not have suited on an all-weather surface. With his fitness now assured, and back at this track, he is the one to beat.
3.35 Newmarket – Asmeralda (1pt win – 10/1)
Beautify’s only blip came here, which would unnerve backers of the highest-rated filly in the race. Meanwhile Godolphin do not have the best record with fancied runners in this contest, their last winner coming in 2018. That is a negative for Act Of Kindness, whereas the Gosden yard has three wins in the last ten Nell Gwyn Stakes’. As such, the unexposed Asmeralda is worth chancing. Her trainers won this last year with Zanzoun, and the selection is their sole representative here. She won by half-a-length at Kempton in December. That runner-up subsequently hit the frame in a French Group 3 at the weekend and had prior racecourse experience. That Asmeralda managed to win speaks to her potential. The daughter of Night Of Thunder could have plenty more to offer, with the trip set to suit too.
