13:45 – Darley EBF Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB/GBBPlus Race)

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a compact but informative maiden, and the market has already done a fair bit of sorting. Earth Shot sets the standard on what she achieved when runner-up on debut and, with a rating of 92, she is the obvious one they all have to beat if returning in the same nick. The most interesting threat is Velvet Vega, a Gosden newcomer in a race lacking depth beyond the front end of the betting, while Blue Noon and Malika both showed enough first time up to suggest they can step forward over this longer trip. The rest look up against it on what they have shown. In truth, it is not the deepest Class 2 maiden you will see, but it is still a race where one with proper middle-distance potential should emerge.

Top Selections

1. Earth Shot – 5/6 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 2- | Rating: 92 | Topspeed: 56

Earth Shot is hard to oppose. She brings the best piece of form into the race by some margin after finishing second on her sole start, and that opening mark of 92 is a clear signal she sets the standard. Haggas does very well with fillies who know their job, and Tom Marquand is exactly the sort you want aboard in a small tactical field round here. The step up to 1m2f looks an obvious plus rather than a query, and while 5/6 is no giveaway, she still looks the likeliest winner because the others have either more to prove or have to improve plenty. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Blue Noon – 13/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Joe Leavy | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 4- | Rating: 82 | Topspeed: 46

Blue Noon makes more each-way appeal than most in here. Her debut fourth was perfectly respectable, and unlike a couple of these she has already shown she can be competitive in a race of this nature. The opening rating of 82 puts her behind Earth Shot but not out of the argument for the places, and there is every chance this extra distance brings out a bit more. Hannon’s filly does not need to find masses to get involved if the favourite wins as expected, and 13/2 looks a fair price in a seven-runner race where the outsiders appear badly up against it. She looks the value each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple: Earth Shot is the win play because she has the strongest form and the best rating in the field. For an each-way alternative, Blue Noon appeals most at the prices, with enough debut promise to think she can hit the frame. Velvet Vega is the obvious danger if strong in the market, but on known evidence the favourite should take plenty of stopping.

14:20 – JCB Newmarket Stakes (Listed Race) (Colts & Geldings)

Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 1 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This may be a five-runner Listed race, but it has a fair bit of depth for the grade. Charlie Appleby’s Poseidon’s Warrior sets the standard on a mark of 118 after shaping like a colt going right to the top when second on his return, while My Love Is King is the obvious threat after posting the best Topspeed figure in the field and running well into second on his comeback. Lyneham is unexposed for Ralph Beckett and could easily improve again at this trip, whereas Archers Bay arrives on the back of a win and isn’t entirely dismissed despite bigger odds. Ancient Egypt has solid juvenile form but needs to find a chunk. Tactically, in a small field, this could come down to who settles best and quickens hardest.

Top Selections

1. Poseidon’s Warrior

Jockey: Billy Loughnane | Trainer: Charlie Appleby | Form: 21-2 | Rating: 118 | Topspeed: 106

He is the one I’d want on my side. A mark of 118 towers over this field and his profile screams quality: he won at two, signed off his juvenile season with a smart effort, and returned with another excellent second that strongly advertised he has trained on. In a race lacking depth beyond the principals, that level of form gives him a clear edge. Appleby knows exactly what type is needed for this meeting and Billy Loughnane is more than capable in these tactical, small-field contests. If this turns into a proper test of class rather than a messy sprint, Poseidon’s Warrior looks hard to oppose. Bet: WIN

Betting Strategy

Keep it simple in a race of this size: Poseidon’s Warrior is the win bet and there is no each-way angle worth forcing with only five runners. My Love Is King looks the main danger after a solid seasonal return, while Lyneham is the one with the scope to step forward if the favourite underperforms.

14:55 – Betfred “The Classic Bookmaker” Handicap

Race Details: 1m | Class 3 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a smart little 3yo handicap rather than a numbers game, and there are quite a few with the look of proper improvers. Fort Rock heads the market after winning both starts and is easy enough to like for a yard that places them aggressively, while Lake Como brings the highest rating into the race and wasn’t disgraced when third on his return. Zennor Storm and Objector are unbeaten and clearly open to more, so this is not lacking depth. The interesting angle, though, may be the weights: St Anton gets in lightly for one with solid handicap credentials already, and Comic Hero is another with a handy racing weight. Tricky, yes, but it looks the sort of race where a well-treated improver can edge out the sexy unbeaten profiles.

Top Selections

1. St Anton – 9/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Joe Leavy | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 322-3 | Rating: 100 | Topspeed: 95

St Anton makes plenty of appeal in a race full of potential but not many who look obviously better treated than him. He ran well on his comeback when third, his form already reads like that of a horse capable of winning a race of this nature, and that Topspeed figure of 95 is the best on offer here. The 127lb catches the eye too, because he doesn’t have to improve massively to be right in the thick of it. Hannon’s colt has been keeping good company and looks the type to thrive in a strongly run mile handicap. At 9/2, he strikes me as the percentage call against less battle-hardened rivals.

Bet: WIN

2. Vincenzo Peruggia – 10/1 with Bet365

Jockey: David Egan | Trainer: Charlie Johnston | Form: 310-2 | Rating: 96 | Topspeed: 92

Vincenzo Peruggia looks the each-way value if you want to play against the obvious shorter ones. He returned with a solid second and that run should have put him spot on for this, while Charlie Johnston’s horses are rarely short of fitness or resolution. His mark of 96 looks workable in this company and the 92 Topspeed says he has the engine for a race like this. He may not have the sexy profile of the unbeaten pair, but he has a touch more substance than some of them and David Egan is a good booking for a tactical mile at Newmarket. Around 10/1, he’s a very fair each-way punt.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

St Anton is the win play at around the 9/2 mark, mainly because he brings the strongest mix of proven handicap form, pace figures and a nice racing weight. Vincenzo Peruggia is the each-way alternative at 10/1, with his recent return suggesting he’s ready to peak. Fort Rock is the obvious danger, while Lake Como and Zennor Storm are respected in a race with plenty of upside.

15:30 – Betfred Jockey Club Stakes (Group 2)

Race Details: 1m 4f | Class 1 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a neat little seven-runner Group 2 rather than an especially deep one, but it is still a race with a proper competitive look to it. Bay City Roller heads the market after ending last season with a win and his 125 rating puts him right at the top of the pile alongside Eydon, while Sunway and Santorini Star both bring solid bits of pattern-race form to the table. French Master is another who can easily get involved if the Gosdens have him straight enough. The shape of the race matters here because there is no obvious tearaway, so tactical speed and the ability to hold a position could be decisive. In a small field like this, I would rather side with a horse still going forward than one relying on old form.

Top Selections

1. Bay City Roller – 3/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Billy Loughnane | Trainer: George Scott | Form: 62241- | Rating: 125 | Topspeed: 110

Bay City Roller makes plenty of appeal as the win play because he ended last season by getting his head in front and his profile still suggests there is more to come at this sort of trip. A mark of 125 already gives him the joint-best rating in the field and, crucially, he looks less exposed than some of these older rivals. Billy Loughnane is a positive booking in what could turn tactical, and stall 4 should allow him to sit wherever he wants. At 3/1, he is not exactly hidden, but he does look the one with the strongest blend of current momentum and class. Bet: WIN

2. Santorini Star – 11/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 44112- | Rating: 123 | Topspeed: 117

Santorini Star is the each-way angle because he brings a likeable profile into this and, on Topspeed figures, he actually comes out best of the lot with 117. He won twice before signing off with a solid second, and that form string of 44112- suggests a horse who really found his groove as last season went on. William Haggas is exactly the sort to place one well in a race like this, and Tom Marquand is an eye-catching partner in a small-field contest where positioning counts for plenty. Available at 11/2, he looks the value if the market continues to focus mainly on the top two in the betting. Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Bay City Roller is the straightforward win bet and the one I would want on side most strongly in a race lacking obvious depth. Santorini Star makes plenty of sense as the each-way punt with three places on offer in a seven-runner field. The obvious dangers are French Master, who has enough class to get involved, and Sunway, though he does have a bit to prove after ending last season below his best.

16:05 – Betfred “Nifty 50” Handicap

Race Details: 7f | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This looks a proper little seven-furlong handicap rather than a numbers job, with several arriving off marks that leave them tightly matched. Golden Redemption heads the market and it is easy enough to see why after a solid comeback third, while Elarak has the class angle but also plenty of weight to lump from stall 1. Shah is the intriguing one after a long absence, and if he returns anywhere near the level hinted at in his unbeaten finish to last season he becomes a major player. Billyjoh and Leadman are seasoned handicap operators who could get involved if the race is run to suit, but this feels like a contest likely to be decided by which of the younger four-year-olds still has a bit in hand. Tricky, yes, but not impossible.

Top Selections

1. Golden Redemption – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 3123-3 | Rating: 112 | Topspeed: 105

Golden Redemption makes plenty of appeal in a race where there are cases to be made for several. He returned with a good third, which looked exactly the sort of run you want to see from a Balding four-year-old coming into a handicap like this, and his overall profile is that of a progressive sort who has not finished improving yet. A Topspeed of 105 says he has the raw pace for a race of this nature, and carrying just 117 looks workable against rivals higher up the weights. Silvestre De Sousa is an eye-catching booking for a horse likely to be ridden positively enough. At 5/2, he is short enough, but still the one most likely to run his race. End with him.

Bet: WIN

2. Shah – 5/1 with Bet365

Jockey: Billy Loughnane | Trainer: George Boughey | Form: 2221/ | Rating: | Topspeed:

Shah is the interesting each-way play because there is a fair chance the market has him about right, but there is also a chance it has underestimated him. He signed off with a win after a string of runner-up efforts, so there was clear progression there, and George Boughey is more than capable of readying one after time away. The obvious issue is the absence, and in a sharp handicap like this you do not get much room for rustiness, but draw 2 is handy and Billy Loughnane is exactly the type you want on a horse who may need a smart, efficient ride. Available at 5/1, he looks a sensible each-way punt in an eight-runner race with three places on offer.

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Golden Redemption is the win play because he brings the most convincing blend of recent form, pace figures and a workable weight. Shah is the each-way alternative in a race where his upside could easily outrun the layoff concern. Elarak is respected under top weight, while Leadman is the danger at a price if bouncing back from a modest reappearance.

16:40 – Pertemps Network King Charles II Stakes (Listed Race)

Race Details: 7f | Class 1 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a compact but pretty intriguing Listed race, with quality packed into a six-runner field and not much room for hiding places over Newmarket’s straight 7f. Charlie Appleby runs two, headed by the unbeaten Cerro Blanco, while Stellar Sunrise arrives on the back of another win and already looks a reliable benchmark at this level. Jel Pepper has the ratings to get involved if building on his reappearance, and Saber Strike is the unexposed one after making a winning debut and disappearing for the winter. In a race lacking numbers but not depth, tactical sharpness and how much improvement the three-year-olds have found from two to three will be the key. It looks competitive rather than a penalty kick for the favourite.

Top Selections

1. Stellar Sunrise – 5/2 with Bet365

Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: 3115-1 | Rating: 110 | Topspeed: 97

Stellar Sunrise brings the most convincing body of work into the race and appeals as the one with the right mix of proven ability and scope for another step forward. A mark of 110 sets the standard alongside Jel Pepper, and the latest win suggests he has come back in the same vein as last season. Balding’s colt has already shown he can cope with a proper pace and a battle, which matters in a small-field Listed contest where class tends to get exposed. Oisin Murphy is an obvious positive booking, and at 5/2 he makes plenty of appeal against a short-priced rival coming here off just one run. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Saber Strike – 9/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Tom Marquand | Trainer: William Haggas | Form: 1- | Rating: 99 | Topspeed: 73

Saber Strike is the interesting each-way angle because he could easily be better than the bare numbers after just one career start. He won on debut and has clearly been given time, which is no bad thing from the Haggas yard with a three-year-old expected to progress. The opening rating of 99 leaves him a bit to find with the principals, but that also means the market may not have fully caught up if he has improved as expected through the winter. Tom Marquand is exactly the sort you want aboard in a tactical small-field race, and 9/2 looks fair for a colt with more upside than exposed form. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Stellar Sunrise is the win play because his profile is the most solid in the field and his rating gives him major claims. For an each-way punt, Saber Strike makes more appeal than the obvious ones at the prices because he is the potential improver. Cerro Blanco is the danger if his debut win was the start of something smart, while Jel Pepper is respected on ratings but doesn’t look quite as persuasive as the top two from a betting angle.

17:15 – Close Brothers Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: 6f | Class 3 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat

This is a proper end-of-card handicap rather than a gimme, with a strong 3yo team taking on some battle-hardened older fillies. Lady Roxby sets the standard on recent figures after another solid placed effort, while Angel Love, Paradise Walk and Lightning Polka all arrive with the sort of profiles that suggest there is more to come. Cuban Lady is another with enough back form to feature if ready after a break, and the market has plenty of respect for her. The interesting angle, though, is whether the lightly raced 3yos can get the better of exposed older rivals over this sharp 6f. In a race with depth but not much certainty, I’d much rather side with unexposed fillies than the ones who have shown their full hand.

Top Selections

1. Paradise Walk – 13/2 with William Hill

Jockey: Hector Crouch | Trainer: Ralph Beckett | Form: 22-2 | Rating: 83 | Topspeed:

She makes plenty of appeal in a race where upward mobility could be the key. Paradise Walk has done very little wrong in three starts, finishing runner-up on all of them, and the latest 22-2 line suggests she has returned in good order rather than needing the run. An opening mark of 83 looks fair enough for a Beckett filly who still has a bit of mystery about her, and that is often what you want in these mixed-age handicaps early in the season. Hector Crouch is a positive booking and 13/2 looks perfectly workable for a filly who should be competitive and may yet have a bit in hand. Bet: WIN

Bet: WIN

2. Angel Love – 6/1 with Sky Bet

Jockey: David Egan | Trainer: Kevin Philippart De Foy | Form: 231- | Rating: 89 | Topspeed:

Angel Love is the each-way angle because she has the right profile for a race like this and does not need to improve much to make the frame. She signed off last season with a win after shaping well in defeat beforehand, so the 231- sequence reads nicely, and her yard is perfectly capable of placing one to strike in this sort of handicap. A mark of 89 asks a question on seasonal return, but she is unexposed compared to plenty of these and David Egan is the sort of rider you want in a big-field 6f handicap. At 6/1, she looks a sensible each-way punt rather than an adventurous one. Bet: EACH-WAY

Bet: EACH-WAY

Betting Strategy

Paradise Walk is the win play because she looks progressive and may still be ahead of the assessor. Angel Love is the each-way alternative in a 13-runner race with four places on offer, as her profile is solid and there should be more to come at this trip. Lady Roxby is the obvious danger on proven handicap form, while Cuban Lady is another to keep on side if strong in the market.
