13:50 – Betway Handicap
Race Details: 6f | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a proper early-season 3yo sprint handicap, deep enough to be informative and messy enough to punish lazy punting. Sovereign Spell arrives with the standout rating of 109 and obvious momentum after winning on return, while Treanmor and Albaydaa are the unexposed types from powerful yards who could easily have more to offer than their marks imply. Song Of The Clyde is solid and likeable, but the widest draws are never ideal in a big-field Newmarket sprint, and Silent Applause has ability without looking thrown in. Lower down the weights, Lebron Power is interesting on topspeed figures and could outrun his price. It looks a strong Class 2 for the grade, but not one where there’s an obvious good thing.
Top Selections
1. Sovereign Spell – 5/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Rowan Scott | Trainer: Kevin Philippart De Foy | Form: 20D13-1 | Rating: 109 | Topspeed: 95
He makes plenty of appeal in a race where a few of the market principals still have something to prove in a rough handicap. Sovereign Spell has already shown he can carry his progression into this season, winning first time up, and his mark of 109 tells you he has achieved more on paper than most of these. Drawn in 4, he should have options rather than needing luck from an extreme stall, and this stiff 6f ought to suit a colt who looks straightforward and battle-hardened. At 5/1, he is hardly missed, but he still makes the most sense because his profile combines current fitness, solid figures and less guesswork than several of his chief rivals. Bet: WIN
2. Lebron Power – 16/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Sean Levey | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 40101- | Rating: 104 | Topspeed: 103
He looks a lively each-way play at a double-figure price. Two wins from his last three starts mark him down as a progressive sprinter, and that topspeed figure of 103 jumps off the page in the context of this race. He is not burdened by a big weight either, carrying 123, which gives him a fair chance of being very competitive if he has trained on from two to three. Richard Hannon can ready one for these Newmarket handicaps, and Sean Levey is the right man for a race likely to be decided by timing and track position rather than brute force. Available at 16/1, he looks overpriced against more fashionable yards. Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Sovereign Spell is the win bet because he brings the best recent profile and the least amount of guesswork. For an each-way punt, Lebron Power stands out at the prices given his strong topspeed figure and progressive profile. The obvious dangers are Albaydaa, who could be well treated, and Treanmor, whose yard and jockey combination demands respect.

14:25 – Betway Wood Ditton Maiden Stakes (GBB Race)
Race Details: 1m | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a typically informative Wood Ditton: lightly raced yards, blue-blooded newcomers and a market that should tell plenty. Charlie Appleby’s Crown Knott and the Gosden pair Portcullis and Santushti dominate the early betting, which is hardly a surprise in a Newmarket maiden over a mile. North Beach appeals as the obvious one at a slightly bigger price from Andrew Balding’s yard, while the rest may need to be smart to trouble the principals first time out. With so many making their debut and no published form to lean on, this is more about stable intent, jockey bookings and market confidence than anything concrete. It is a strong maiden on paper, but also a tricky punting race because the top three are all housed in yards that know exactly what is required here.
Top Selections
1. Crown Knott – 9/4 with Bet365
Jockey: William Buick | Trainer: Charlie Appleby | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
Appleby and Buick in a Newmarket maiden is never a combination to treat lightly, and Crown Knott is the one I want on side. He is prominent in the betting at 9/4 with Bet365 and that makes plenty of sense given the yard’s record with well-bred, ready-made three-year-olds at this track. In races like this, Buick’s presence often speaks loudly enough, and the colt has the profile of one expected to know his job. There are other obvious threats, especially from Clarehaven, but this runner looks the percentage call in a race where stable power should come to the fore. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. North Beach – 7/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
If you want to step away from the short-priced trio, North Beach makes plenty of each-way appeal at 7/1 with Bet365. Balding is more than capable of readying a useful middle-distance type for a race like this, and this colt sits in that sweet spot where he has enough stable strength behind him without having to prove he is a superstar straight away. Rob Hornby is a solid booking and, in a maiden full of fashionable names, this one could easily be underestimated. He does not need to be the best horse in the field to reward an each-way punt; he just needs to be as professional as he looks on paper. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Crown Knott is the win play in what looks a race likely to be decided by the big Newmarket yards. For an each-way alternative, North Beach looks the value against the obvious market leaders. The main dangers are Portcullis and Santushti, with the Gosdens holding a very strong hand, so keep a close eye on late market signals.

15:00 – Zyn Abernant Stakes (Group 3)
Race Details: 6f | Class 1 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a proper Abernant, not one of those thin early-season Group races where two or three dominate the conversation. Time For Sandals sets the standard on the figures and gets weight from most of these, so she is the obvious starting point, but there are plenty with legitimate claims. Quinault arrives thriving and is a smart track-and-trip type, Aramram comes here off a notable return win, while Jasour hinted at a revival on his comeback. The three-year-olds Beckford’s Folly and Aspect Island get plenty of weight, which makes them interesting, though this is a big ask in deeper company. Tactically, there looks enough pace on paper for this to be strongly run, and that should suit those who can travel and finish rather than just blast away. Tricky, competitive and a race where value matters.
Top Selections
1. Time For Sandals – 7/2 with Betfair
Jockey: Ryan Moore | Trainer: Harry Eustace | Form: 32137- | Rating: 125 | Topspeed: 103
She makes plenty of appeal on the bare numbers alone. A mark of 125 leaves her clear at the head of this field and, crucially, she carries only 132, so she gets weight from the older males despite already having shown Group-level ability. The form figures tailed off with a seventh on her final start of last season, but there is no great shame in one flat run and her earlier efforts read well in the context of this race. Ryan Moore is an eye-catching booking for a filly who looks tailor-made for a fast-run six at Newmarket, and 7/2 is fair rather than flashy. She is the one they all have to beat. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Aramram – 15/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Sean Levey | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 9371-1 | Rating: 119 | Topspeed: 99
At the prices, Aramram is the each-way play. He returned with a win and did it in the manner of a sprinter who may be ready to enjoy his best season yet, leaving behind a slightly mixed profile from last year. Richard Hannon’s five-year-old is now operating off 119, which puts him right in the mix, and Sean Levey knows exactly how to ride these sharp six-furlong handicappers and pattern-race types from the yard. Stall 12 is not an obvious negative if they come stands’ side, and in a race packed with exposed older sprinters, he is one I can see improving again. Available at 15/2, he looks a rock-solid each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Time For Sandals is the win bet because her rating and weight concession make her very hard to crab in this grade. Aramram is the each-way alternative in a 14-runner field with four places on offer, and his recent win suggests he is still going the right way. Quinault is the obvious danger, with Jasour another who could easily outrun his price if building on that comeback second.

15:35 – Betway Craven Stakes (Group 3) (Colts & Geldings)
Race Details: 1m | Class 1 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This looks a proper Craven rather than a routine trial, with two unbeaten colts at the head of the market and a couple of battle-hardened rivals ready to test the hype. Hidden Force arrives with the sexy profile after winning both starts for Charlie Appleby, while Hawk Mountain brings the strongest published figures, including a lofty 128 rating and four wins from five. Avicenna is no back number either after signing off last year with a second novice success, and Oxagon has mixed it in deeper company than most of these. Over a straight Newmarket mile, tactical pace and professionalism matter as much as raw talent, and that is what makes this such an intriguing little puzzle. It is a strong renewal on paper, but not one to take at face value.
Top Selections
1. Hawk Mountain – 5/2 with Betfair
Jockey: Ryan Moore | Trainer: A P O’Brien | Form: 5111- | Rating: 128 | Topspeed: 124
He sets the standard and, unlike a few in here, he has already shown a proper level of substance. Four wins from five starts is one thing, but a mark of 128 and a Topspeed of 124 tell you this colt has already done serious work on the track. Aidan O’Brien does not send many to Newmarket for the scenery, and with Ryan Moore booked you can safely assume this is a meaningful trial rather than an educational spin. The straight mile should suit his strong travelling style, and at 5/2 he is not exactly a giveaway, but he is still the one with the least to prove. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Avicenna – 6/1 with Betfair
Jockey: Ray Dawson | Trainer: Roger Varian | Form: 11- | Rating: 114 | Topspeed: 99
Avicenna is the one at a slightly bigger price who makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race dominated by the obvious pair. He is unbeaten in two starts, shaped like a colt with more in the locker last season, and Roger Varian is more than capable of bringing one forward for a spring target such as this. His rating of 114 leaves him with ground to make up on Hawk Mountain and Oxagon on the bare figures, but that is often the nature of these early three-year-old trials. At 6/1 with three places on offer, he looks the value each-way punt if taking another step forward from two to three. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Hawk Mountain is the win play because he brings the strongest established form and the best figures into the race, and he looks hard to oppose if ready first time. For an each-way option, Avicenna appeals more than the market suggests, especially with his unbeaten record and scope for improvement. Hidden Force is the obvious danger, while Oxagon is respected if he has strengthened up over the winter.

16:10 – Rossdales Maiden Fillies’ Stakes (GBB Race)
Race Details: 7f | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a small but fairly informative fillies’ maiden, and the market looks to have latched on to the right pair. Hassaleh sets the standard on what we have seen, having shown clear promise when third on debut, while Pointe Bleu comes from a yard that does particularly well with this type and is the obvious unknown quantity with upside. Baandee is the solid line through established maiden form after finishing second on all three starts, but there is a nagging suspicion she may prove vulnerable again if one of the bigger operations unleashes a smart one. Thursday Girl should know more this time, while Eloquencia and La Mariposa need to be better than the market expects. It is not the deepest Class 2 maiden on the card, but it is a race where potential could easily trump experience.
Top Selections
1. Hassaleh – 5/4 with Bet365
Jockey: William Buick | Trainer: Charlie Appleby | Form: 3- | Rating: 77 | Topspeed: 76
Hassaleh is the percentage call. She shaped with plenty of encouragement when third on her only start as a 2yo and that form, in the context of this race, is the best piece on offer. Appleby’s fillies often take a step forward from first to second run, and the booking of William Buick only reinforces the expectation that she is here to win rather than merely learn. A mark of 77 and Topspeed of 76 already give her a useful platform, and this extra experience can count for plenty in a six-runner maiden. At 5/4 she is no giveaway, but she is still hard to oppose. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Baandee – 13/2 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Daniel Muscutt | Trainer: Jack Morland | Form: 22-2 | Rating: 84 | Topspeed:
Baandee is the each-way angle because she keeps running her race and brings the highest official rating in the line-up. Three seconds from four starts can be read two ways: either frustrating, or rock-solid. In a race where a couple of the likely dangers are making seasonal or career debuts, that dependability has value. She is clearly effective at this sort of level and should be fit enough to do herself justice again. The slight concern is that she may lack the scope of a Hassaleh or a well-bred newcomer like Pointe Bleu, but at 13/2 she makes more appeal as a place play than several shorter ones. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Hassaleh is the win bet and looks the one with the right blend of form, ability and likely improvement. For an each-way punt in this six-runner field, Baandee is the pragmatic choice because she sets a reliable standard and should be in the first two if running to her mark. Pointe Bleu is the obvious danger if the Haggas newcomer is ready to go first time.

16:45 – Betway EBF “Confined” Novice Stakes (For horses Which Have Run No More Than Once) (GBB/GBBPlus Race)
Race Details: 1m 2f | Class 2 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a compact but interesting novice, with four last-time-out winners and a debutant in Galiyan adding a bit of intrigue. Maho Bay sets the standard on the figures after posting a 94 rating, while Guildmaster is close behind on 92 and also brings the powerful Gosden team into the argument. Amadeus Mozart is another obvious player for Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore, and you can be sure he’ll be stronger now tackling 1m2f on his return. The question is whether this turns into a straight shootout between the obvious pair or whether one of the less exposed types can step forward. In a six-runner race with limited each-way terms, it’s not quite a penalty kick, but Maho Bay looks the most solid piece of form on offer.
Top Selections
1. Maho Bay – 6/4 with Sky Bet
Jockey: William Buick | Trainer: Charlie Appleby | Form: 1- | Rating: 94 | Topspeed:
He’s the one I’d want on side. Maho Bay comes here with the best rating in the field and, in a race where so many arrive with just a single run under their belt, that matters. Appleby and Buick are an obvious combination to respect at this track, and this colt already looks the finished article among these lightly raced types. The market has him clear enough at the head of affairs and 6/4 is hardly extravagant, but it’s fair given what he achieved first time up. If he settles and sees out this longer trip as expected, he holds the strongest claims. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Galiyan – 9/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Oisin Murphy | Trainer: Andrew Balding | Form: | Rating: | Topspeed:
For an each-way swing in a race lacking depth beyond the principals, Galiyan makes some appeal. He’s the unknown quantity, but in these confined novices that can be no bad thing, especially from a yard that does well with middle-distance prospects and with Oisin Murphy booked. You’re taking plenty on trust because there’s no racecourse evidence to lean on, but 9/1 feels a fair price in a six-runner contest where one or two have to improve markedly to trouble the front pair anyway. If he’s ready to roll first time and handles the occasion, he could easily be the one picking up the pieces late. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Maho Bay is the percentage call and looks the right win bet on the back of the best form and the highest rating in the field. Galiyan is the more speculative play, but 9/1 gives him each-way appeal if you want a bit of value against the obvious contenders. The main dangers are Guildmaster and Amadeus Mozart, both of whom have enough substance to make this more than a one-horse race.

17:20 – Watch Live Racing At Betway Handicap
Race Details: 7f | Class 3 | Going: 6.9) (watered) (Good (goingstick) | | flat
This is a proper end-of-card handicap, deep, competitive and not lacking for angles. Storm Free heads the market after ending last season with a win and he’s an obvious starting point, while Huscal, Gangsta Man and Dragon Leader all arrive with the sort of profiles that make plenty of appeal in a big-field 7f at Newmarket. Goldmoyne has been thriving, Morte Point is another progressive type, and Royal Velvet has the services of William Buick, so there’s no shortage of credible cases. The trick is working out who is still ahead of the assessor and who may already be high enough in the weights. In a race where several are exposed to one degree or another, I’m inclined to side with a lightly-raced 4yo at the head of the market and one lurking lower down who looks attractively weighted.
Top Selections
1. Storm Free – 4/1 with Bet365
Jockey: James Doyle | Trainer: James Tate | Form: /1321- | Rating: 108 | Topspeed: 97
Storm Free looks the solid one. He signed off last year with a win, his profile still has room in it, and a mark of 108 doesn’t scream harsh given he’s only had a handful of starts. James Tate does well with this type of sharp 4yo handicapper and James Doyle is exactly the rider you want in a race where track position and timing matter. The draw in 4 is no bad thing either. At 4/1 he’s not exactly hidden, but sometimes the obvious answer is the right one, and he has fewer questions around him than most of these. He holds strong claims if returning in the same groove. 2. Dragon Leader – 17/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Rob Hornby | Trainer: Clive Cox | Form: 8/0-63 | Rating: 105 | Topspeed: 90
Dragon Leader is the each-way play because he looks like he’s building back towards his best and his current mark gives him a real squeak in a race paying five places. His last two runs, finishing sixth and then third, suggest the engine is warming up, and Clive Cox’s horses can improve sharply once they get a run or two under their belt. Carrying just 123, he’s better off at the weights than plenty of the principals and that matters late on in a cavalry charge over this trip. The wide draw in 18 isn’t ideal, but at 17/2 with Bet365 he still makes plenty of each-way appeal. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Storm Free is the win bet because he brings the strongest recent profile and still looks capable of better. Dragon Leader is the each-way punt at a fair price with five places on offer and a handy racing weight. The obvious dangers are Huscal, who is very consistent, and Gangsta Man, who arrives in form and won’t need to improve much to get involved.
