3.00 Newmarket – ROYAL VELVET (1pt win – 5/2 Sky Bet)
A convincing one-length winner at York on her last start, William Knight’s ROYAL VELVET will look to continue that excellent recent form and carry top weight to victory in the 3.00pm at Newmarket. Given a 5lbs rise by the handicapper for that dominant win on the Knavesmire, the four-year-old will need to improve, but three starts ago she tasted victory at Newmarket, so a return to Flat HQ will be a huge positive. Plenty line up with the potential to challenge, but Royal Velvet is in the form of her life and she can strike again.
3.35 Newmarket – STELLAR SUNRISE (1pt win – 9/2 Paddy Power)
Well fancied for the Acomb Stakes at York last month, Distant Storm failed to build on an impressive debut and Charlie Appleby’s raider will be looking to bounce back to form in the 3.35pm at Newmarket. The Group 3 Somerville Tattersalls Stakes has always unearthed some smart juveniles and Andrew Balding’s STELLAR SUNRISE heads into the race on a brace of wins. A winner at Goodwood two starts ago, he then went and landed a York nursery in style, so is entitled to try and step up into Group company here. He will need to improve again, but he was dominant on his last outing and has the potential to be a class act and is the solid play in a race full of potential.
4.45 Newmarket – SHRIMP SHADY (1pt win – 11/2 bet365)
Jim Boyle’s Son Of Man will have to give weight away to all his rivals in the 4.45pm at Newmarket and it could be the Balding-trained SHRIMP SHADY that makes the most of a 9lbs pull. Lightly-raced with only three starts on his CV, the 80-rated son of Mastercraftsman is yet to be out of the first three and has tasted victory once already in his career. A novice stakes win at Windsor was followed by a third placed finish at Kempton, but the key could be a return to turf here. With champion jockey elect Oisin Murphy in the saddle, Shrimp Shady can duly land a double on the day for the Balding team.
