Newmarket Tips - Matthew Sutcliffe's Craven Meeting Day 1 Picks For Tuesday 14 April

Matthew Sutcliffe focuses his attentions on day one of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket, which takes place on Tuesday 14 April. Looking to kick off the Flat season in style, he has three tips for the action at Flat HQ. There are three fabulous days of action on the level, so check out his best bets for Tuesday’s card.

Newmarket Racing Tips (Tuesday 14 April)

It’s a 1.15pm start at Newmarket, with seven races taking place. Matthew has a trio of selections for the day’s action.

2:25 Newmarket – Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes (GBB Race) (Class  2) (3yo) – Lost Signal 12/1 1pt WIN

Godolphin have had four beaten favourites in this since 2017 so despite them winning with Majestic Pride in 2023, it may pay to take on the keen going Talk Of New York unless a first time hood can conserve his energy early.

Richie’s Rocket is another one with keen tendencies and he still looked in need of experience when rearing at the start at Lingfield in February, and Maximised continues to look as if he was an  early type who might not get this trip.

With that in mind, a chance is taken on Lost Signal whose yard won this with a similarly rated type in 2019. The son of Lucky Vega is two from three, and his sole defeat came on debut when third to Gewan.

He then improved to win a Salisbury maiden with ease and while that form didn’t look strong  initially, the second won last time out and the third has won twice since now rated 89. Two subsequent winners have come out of his Ffos Las Novice Stakes success, which was a lot more comfortable than the bare margin suggests.

He’s well bred from the family of Danehill Dancer and looks to be an uncomplicated colt, which bodes well against some of these buzzier types and if ready to go first time up then he can run a solid race with Shane Foley taking over.

14:25 Federation Of Bloodstock Agents EBF Conditions Stakes (GBB Race)

3:35 Newmarket – Racing TV Handicap (Class 3) (4yo+ 0-95) – Dyonisos 5/1 1pt WIN

The sole runner on the card for Ian Williams, Dyonisos is just one of three in here with a relatively recent run and that can count for plenty against some sorts who may need this first outing. The Goken gelding ran an excellent race in February at Meydan when a length third to last years Ayr

Gold Cup winner Run Boy Run, who was then second in Group 2 company to one who went on to win the Grade 1 Al Quoz Sprint.

He was a £97,000 purchase last season having won three times in France last spring, though failed to get competitive in two competitive sprints. A subsequent gelding operation saw him post a length sixth at Southwell when weakening late on over six furlongs, and he’s closely matched with We Never Stop on that form.

William Buick is booked to ride and he has a respectable strike rate for the yard, returning a £19.08 profit to a £1 stake. He’s 10lbs lower than when making his British debut last season, and  this looks to be a strong chance of getting off the mark after a promising last effort.

15:35 Racing TV Handicap

4:45 Newmarket – Exning Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-100) – Mythical Guest 6/1 1pt EW 3 places

Mythical Guest has a tendency to bump into one better weighted than him as documented when a three length third in this race last season, but the winner won the Clipper Handicap at York two starts later and he’s effectively 3lbs lower with Jack Callan’s 5lbs claim.

He was then second to My Cloud giving him 4lbs at Ascot next time out, with that one now rated 105 after two subsequent wins including the Royal Hunt Cup. Another second came next time as  he bumped into Royal Velvet giving her 6lbs, who’s now rated 15lbs higher.

Mythical Guest largely held his form throughout the season, where he bumped into Bullet Point again when fourth in the Clipper Handicap, and he was a nose behind Nebras in a 0-95 over course and distance here who’s won twice since including in Listed company.

His strike rate of 2-27 doesn’t bode entirely well, but he often goes well around here and the fresh angle is of no concern. There doesn’t appear to be much in here with the potential of being way ahead of their mark, and that was his achilles heel last season thus he may be finally able to get  his head in front.

16:45 Exning Handicap
