Newmarket‘s Craven meeting has already started, with some big names taking to the track on Tuesday. The quality should go up another gear on Wednesday though, with three Pattern races, including the Group3 Nell Gwyn Stakes, a 1000 Guineas trial.
Matty Sutcliffe has provided his best bets on the Newmarket card. They include a 10/1 shot in the feature race…
Newmarket Racing Tips (Wednesday 15 April)
Newmarket hosts seven races as part of its day two card for the Craven meeting. Matty has three top tips across the board.
1:50 Newmarket – Weatherbys Global Stallions App Handicap (Class 2) (4yo+ 0-100) – Diligently 11/1 1pt EW 4 places
Four-year-olds have won seven of the last ten renewals of this race so it’s no surprise them dominate the market here, but Diligently can trump the lot. The son of Harry Angel took a while to get off the mark as a two year old, but when he did he copped the valuable Harry’s Half Million at York’s Ebor meeting, beating the subsequent Grade 1 winner Arizona Blaze.
He ran a then career best RPR when second at Chester on seasonal debut behind one completing a hat trick, now rated 104 after finishing second in the Palace of Holyroodhouse Stakes. He went off the boil twice after, but returned to form with a game win at Windsor beating a subsequent winner into second, and the fourth has won twice since now rated 92.
He was just touched off at Thirsk when last seen giving 12lbs to the winner, who subsequently won the Portland Handicap, and the third won the Ayr Bronze Cup next time.
He’s been gelded since, and if that can bring out further improvement then he can fare better than a mark of 86 this season.
2:25 Newmarket – Betway Feilden Stakes (Listed Race) (Class 1) (3yo) – Bourbon Blues 16/1 1pt EW 3 places
Brian Meehan won this with Jayarebe in 2024 and Bourbon Blues can emulate that success. He looked smart last season when a four-length winner at Brighton, before faring well in the Coventry.
He was set some stiff tasks thereafter but largely held his own, such as a rallying fourth when looking outpaced in the G2 Superlative Stakes.
When upped beyond a mile toward the end of the year, he recorded two RPR’s of 101 including when initially awarded 20k three runner nursery here, giving 10lbs to the progressive eventual winner.
He split two Godolphin horses when beaten a head at Chantilly in G3 company when last seen, and while his sire wouldn’t be the most obvious of milers, he’s bred on the dam-side to come into his own at this trip as he ages, and he can put up a bold showing first time out.
3:35 Newmarket – Lanwades Stud Nell Gwyn Stakes (Group 3) (Fillies) (Class 1) (3yo) – Asmeralda 10/1 1pt EW 4 places
The Gosdens have won this three times since 2016 including with Zanzoun last season, who’d last been seen winning on the all-weather, and Asmeralda can follow suit.
The Gosden’s like to debut their smart ones at Kempton, as they did with Daban in 2017 who went on to win the Nell Gwynn and Asmeralda looked smart herself when taking a Novice Stakes there in December. She was in touch throughout despite a slow start, and came on the outside travelling notably strong under Oisin Murphy.
She was green in the final stages, but still held off the 5/6f Godolphin favourite who was third to Karl Burke’s Evolutionist in the Prix de la Grotte at the weekend.
She’s a well-bred daughter of Night Of Thunder, and is one of four entries in the 1000 Guineas for Closutton.
