Moved from Haydock as work continues at that track, the historic Old Newton Cup handicap now fits into Newmarket‘s Saturday meeting. The 1m4f race will be contested on the July Course, with 12 runners going to post.
GG tipster Joe Napier previews the race. He cannot see past a progressive type landing the race en route to even bigger prizes.
2026 Old Newton Cup Runners
Klassleader and Plage De Havre bring York’s Jorvik Handicap form to Newmarket. The former only hit full stride after delayed acceleration on the Knavesmire, but was unstoppable once he did. The five lengths he put between himself and Plage De Havre looks unassailable given he could have progression in him, though Andrew Balding’s charge has been dropped 1lb and is capable off this mark. Paddy The Squire also ran that day and franked the form when third at Royal Ascot next time out. It is difficult to see him overturning form with the above principles, though.
Claymore and Elsass both won convincingly last time out. The latter is more intriguing upped in class, with the former punished quite harshly for his Windsor win. Night Breeze and Sportingsilvermine also scored recently, but the handicapper looks to have a grip on both for now.
Top-weight Burdett Road is the class horse in the race on past efforts. he has snuck down the weights, but might not have the potential of these. Stablemate Ammes is a consistent type, but looks an unlikely winner with the handicapper not relenting on his rating.
Enemy looks to be on the decline, but both Al Aali and Fierce Fortitude could run big races. The first-named has slipped to a tempting mark after an eyecatching fifth at Sandown in which, not for the first time, he has looked to be crying out for 1m4f. Fierce Fortitude also sees out 1m2f well despite his speedy pedigree and finished in the top three on his last six starts.

Old Newton Cup Trends 2026
This race is usually run at Haydock, but takes place this year at Newmarket. As such, traditional trends do not apply, although trend-spotters may note that none of the last ten favourites have won the race. Similarly, the last two renewals have gone to four-year-olds after the previous six had gone to five or six-year-olds.
2026 Old Newton Cup Tips
Plage De Havre is weighted to get closer to Klassleader on their York meeting. However, William Haggas’ charge saw that race out so likeably and should be too progressive in the face of an 8lb rise in the handicap. He can confirm his position atop the Ebor betting, while Al Aali is an interesting outsider for George Scott upped to 1m4f.
