A field of seven are set to head to the 3m 1f 125y start for the 2026 Peter Marsh Handicap Chase, but whilst there’s not a bumper field taking their chance at Haydock Park there are some quality staying chasers looking to potentially throw their hat into the Cheltenham Gold Cup ring.
We take a look at all the runners for the £56k-to-the-winner contest, as well as picking out some key trends and pick our 1-2-3 for the showpiece event on the card.
2026 Peter Marsh Chase Runners
A runaway 11-length winner of the Ultima Handicap Chase at the Cheltenham Festival in March, Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore’s Myretown was unable to follow that up in the Coral Gold Cup at Newbury on his first start this season, as he was a faller at the 9th fence. Looking to bounce back here and book his spot in the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the lightly-raced chaser is still open to improvement. Another on a rapid incline is Joel Parkinson & Sue Smith’s Konfusion, who is another that holds a Gold Cup entry and was last seen winning the Rowland Meyrick in fine style. A dual winner of this race, Royale Pagaille will be looking for a hat-trick of wins, but the Venetia Williams-trained veteran will have the burden of top weight. Second in the Kim Muir in March, Johnnywho was third in Ascot’s Silver Cup last time and adds more depth to the race, as do Richmond Lake, Imperial Saint and Nassalam, who complete the line-up.

- 3 of the last 10 winners have carried more than 11st to victory

Peter Marsh Chase Tips
If Myretown can produce anything like his Ultima run then he should be taking this contest en route to a crack at the Cheltenham Gold Cup. A faller last time out, he will need to bounce back, but he’s certainly the one with the most potential in this line-up and he can get the better of Johnnywho, who continues to find one too good. Royale Pagaille has shown he’s a revelation around Haydock and should relish the conditions, so he can plod on for third spot.
