The absence of Epsom’s meeting leaves Tuesday without its feature card. However, four tracks still go racing on the day, with some high quality handicaps on the flat in particular.
GG tipster Joe Napier sticks to racing on the flat for our lucky 15 tips on Tuesday. He has two selections each from Pontefract & Yarmouth.
Pontefract Racing Tips (Tuesday 21 April)
There is a class 2 contest at Pontefract on Tuesday. One of our tips runs in that race at the Yorkshire track
2.52 Pontefract – Cape Ashizuri (1pt win – )
A few of these ended last season on a low note, but Cape Ashizuri still emerged with some credit. John & Sean Quinn’s charge won on debut at Ayr before finding the Group 2 Champagne Stakes too hot. That was a very good race though, the winner subsequently gaining two Group 1s, the runner-up landing the Craven Stakes last week. The St Mark’s Basilica colt was only second in a Redcar novice to conclude last term. However, even that winner holds a 2000 Guineas entry and this handicap provides a good opportunity to strike fresh.
3.27 Pontefract – Savvy Victory (1pt win – )
The only former Pontefract winner in the line-up, Savvy Victory can outgun his younger rivals. Sean Woods’ runner struggled for most of last season, but Listed company was beyond him in the first half of his campaign and he subsequently competed in strong class 2 handicaps. He was almost always mid-division, but his mark was in the 100s at that point. He has slipped to a rating of 98 despite edging ever closer towards the end of 2025. His return in a Listed race on Kempton’s all-weather was more than adequate regarding this race. A return to the winners’ enclosure now looks imminent.
Yarmouth Racing Tips (Tuesday 21 April)
Six debutants will contest the opening race on Yarmouth’s card, but it is in more established handicap company where our two lucky 15 tips will race.
3.10 Yarmouth – King Of Berkshire (1pt win – 6/1)
Now that he goes up in distance, King Of Berkshire can strike for Andrew Balding. The selection is a son of Camelot, so has always been likely to appreciate a trip. That said, he was a well-backed favourite on his debut here when third of six over 7f. He was then easily held at York, though that race has worked out well, and his recent run at Southwell may have simply helped him get a handicap mark. He was beaten 16 lengths when fourth of 11, but that was still only over 1m. Back on turf, and up to 1m2f on handicap debut, this will be a likelier level for him to shine.
4.55 Yarmouth – Philanthropist (1pt win – 9/2)
Excuses are running out for Philanthropist, but conditions favour him enough to give him a real chance here. His best run on turf came at this track as a juvenile in August 2024. He also was not far away when competing in decent company in May and June of last year on grass. Three defeats there saw him switched back to the all-weather. Despite two placed efforts at Southwell, his mark has dropped a further 2lb to 82. That is his last winning mark, and though his only wins have come on the all-weather, his profile suggests he is as good on turf. Having had a comeback run at Newcastle last month to get him fit, he should be firing on all cylinders.
