Princess Of Wales's Stakes tips, odds, racecard & trends 2026: Verdict on July meeting day one feature

The Group 2 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes is front and centre of Newmarket‘s opening July meeting card. Though it rarely attracts a big field, it will play host to some quality performers for the 2026 renewal.

GG tipster Joe Napier previews the race, with a stirring battle expected between the top two in the market.

2026 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes Runners

The quintet are headed by the admirable Rebel’s Romance. Still going strong at age eight, his only start this year saw him win at this level in Dubai. He was a 2/9 shot and only did what he needed to that day, with a 131-day layoff since slightly unnerving. His strike rate is sensational though, especially below the top level, but may he be growing slightly long in the tooth?

Convergent is definitely a rival up to this level, if slightly below Group 1 standard. Since finishing a short-head second in the 2025 German Derby, he has won three times, including a gutsy display to land the Group 3 John Porter Stakes. That form has been boosted since and he can easily be forgiven a poor run in adverse conditions at Epsom. This looks likely to suit him well.

Almeric looked a horse to follow last season. However, disappointing efforts this campaign appear to have higlighted his need for soft going. He will not get that here, so while Tenability also appears a mudlark at heart, he has some form on quicker going and looks a greater improver than Andrew Balding’s charge. Another Godolphin runner, Arabian Crown, completes the line-up. he was third in a much weaker renewal of this 12 months ago and looks up against it.

OUR TIP
Form: 3112-1 CD
OR: 122
W: 9st 11lb
Age: 8 yo Gelding
Tremendous international performer who has won 21 of 31 races, amassing more than £12m in prize-money; two of last year’s winning highlights were over 1m4f on fast ground at Royal Ascot and in the USA, and he was an odds-on scorer at Meydan in February on his only start this term; highly reliable too, so he looks hard to beat despite conceding 3lb all round.

Form: 119-33

W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Three wins from his first four starts, with a soft-ground Listed success at Ayr (1m2f) last September standing out in form terms; respectable third to top-class Ombudsman at Sandown six weeks ago was easily the best of three runs since, all at 1m2f on good ground (unraced on firmer); he needs to return to peak form and to stay a new trip, so others look far more solid.
Form: 6351-5
OR: 107
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 5 yo Colt
Missed most of 2024 and a narrow Listed win at Windsor (11.4f, good to firm) last August was the only time that he’s recaptured his best; even that isn’t nearly enough to win this and he trailed in last behind Tenability on reappearance at Goodwood last month; stablemate of Rebel’s Romance and might make the running.
4 (4)
Convergent uniform
Form: 117-15 D
OR: 118
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Colt
Tailed off in the mud in his Group 1 attempts last November and last month, latterly in the Coronation Cup at Epsom; progressive otherwise, including two Group wins last autumn and another at Newbury (1m4f, good; Tenability a close third) this April; that Newbury performance makes him a serious contender on form but he’s not raced on ground firmer than good.
Form: 112-31 D
OR: 109
W: 9st 8lb
Age: 4 yo Gelding
Won a novice and three Ascot 1m4f handicaps on varied ground last June-September; reappeared with a close third to Convergent in Newbury Group 3 (1m4f, good) in April and prevailed by a neck against veteran stablemate Hamish in a Listed race at Goodwood (1m4f, soft) last month; last year’s second Ascot handicap was on good to firm, with markedly better form since; he’s a progressive sort but needs to raise his game again.

Verdict

The prospect of good to firm ground, or firmer, seems to seal the deal for £12-million earner REBEL’S ROMANCE given that Convergent has never raced on firmer than good and Tenability’s win on it last August has well and truly been superseded by his subsequent form. They nevertheless look the chief dangers, in that order. 8yo Rebel’s Romance has not raced since February but similar breaks previously have not proved an obstacle.[Richard Austen]

Selections

SPOTLIGHT:

Rebel’s Romance

POSTDATA:

Arabian Crown

  • No outright favourite has won this in the past decade despite no fields bigger than seven runners
  • Charlie Appleby and William Buick have combined for two of the last four winners
  • Seven of the last nine winners have been four-year-olds
  • Only one horse older than six has ever won the race – Cavalryman in 2014 (also a Godolphin eight-year-old)

2026 Princess Of Wales’s Stakes Tips

The 3lb Convergent receives from Rebel’s Romance may tell, with Karl Burke’s charge boasting potential to go even better on good-to-firm ground. Charlie Appleby’s consistent eight-year-old is always a tough nut to crack though, so this should be a fin race. Tenability is improving, but third place looks the ceiling for the remainder.
