Top quality jumping action continues on Thursday 30th April. Day 3 of the Punchestown Festival is set to provide another superb day of thrills and spills.
Our Punchestown Day 3 tips sees us pick out our best bets for Thursday’s action, as we look to land the winner of the Grade 1 Champion Stayers Hurdle at 6.05pm.
3.05 Punchestown – Close Brothers Irish EBF Mares Novice Hurdle – Diamond Du Berlais (1pt win – 13/8)
Useful in France, Diamond Du Berlais kicked off her career with a taking victory at Ludlow, which saw her book his place at the Cheltenham Festival. She was a relative outsider for the Mares’ Novices’ Hurdle last month. However, she put up a bold effort in sixth place. Now stepping into calmer waters, the Willie Mullins-trained mare can duly return to winning ways in the listed event at 3.05pm. Stablemate Future Prospect is the obvious danger and will be ridden by Paul Townend, but Diamond Du Berlais and Patrick Mullins can build on that Cheltenham run and land victory.
4.15 Punchestown – Conway Piling Handicap Hurdle – Fad Eadrainn (1pt each way – 20/1)
Patrick Foley’s Fad Eadrainn has been in decent form of late, but has found a few too good in recent outings. However, he’s certainly overpriced for the hugely competitive 4.15pm contest. Third of eight at Fairyhouse in February, the eight-year-old was last seen back at the same track earlier this month finishing fifth of 15. He runs off the same mark of 123 for this contest and has to be considered. He was only beaten about two lengths by another of Thursday’s rivals in Buachaillbocht in that contest and Fad Eadrainn is better off at the weights here. The pair should be key contenders for this event, but at 20/1 it’s Foley’s charge that makes most appeal.
4.50 Punchestown – Frontline Security Handicap Chase – Ballysax Hank (1pt win – 14/1)
Gavin Cromwell’s Ballysax Hank was given plenty to do in the Grand Annual at Cheltenham last month. But, the classy seven-year-old still managed to finish sixth in that event. He runs off a 1lb lower mark in the 4.50pm at Punchestown. If he can find himself closer to the pace then he could be the one they all have to beat. Runner-up at the Punchestown Festival over hurdles last season, he’s shown a really solid level of form in these sort of handicap chases this season and the former Market Rasen Summer Plate win can land another notable prize over fences.
6.05 Punchestown – Ladbrokes Champion Stayers Hurdle – Honesty Policy (1pt win – 5/1)
Teahupoo is bidding to win this race for the third time in a row and he’s certainly the one they all have to beat. Bob Olinger is another that is a notable contender in the contest, but the ageing pair could be vulnerable to younger, fresher legs in the shape of Honesty Policy. Fifth in the Stayers’ Hurdle at Cheltenham, where he finished ahead of Teahupoo. Gordon Elliott’s charge then went and finished third in the Liverpool Hurdle at Aintree. However, the return to Punchestown could be the key to him, as he showed he can excel at the track when second in a Grade 1 novice event last season. This is an intriguing renewal with many having notable holes in their form. However, Honesty Policy is the one to side with in a trappy betting heat.
