Punchestown Racing Tips (Wednesday 29 April 2026)
A bumper eight-race card takes place at Punchestown, with Andrew looking to kick off in fine style with a winner in the opening contest at 2.30pm. He then has a brace of tips in the competitive 5.25pm race.
2.30 Punchestown – Aguellid (1pt win – 7/1 Sky Bet, Paddy Power, BetVictor, 13/2 generally)
The Philip Hobbs and Johnson White-trained Aguellid was a huge eyecatcher at Exeter on his British debut back in November, finishing a close-up 9-1 third to odds-on favourite Harry Lowes, who also carried the J P McManus colours, and leaving the impression that he could have won with a more vigorous ride. He followed that with runner-up efforts in the mud and Hereford/Wincanton, racing keenly on each occasion, before his maiden hurdle win at Wincanton where he did well to score from off the pace on a track that rarely favours such tactics. He settled better in the big field that day (18 ran) and the patiently-ridden third and eighth have both won since. He’s up in trip for his handicap debut but the hurly-burly of this race will suit, and a McManus-owned British raider was successful in this 12 months ago.
5.25 Punchestown – Dee Capo (0.5pt e/w – 10/1 generally, four places) & Riaan (0.5pt e/w – 18/1 William Hill, 14/1 generally)
Nine of the last ten winners of this 2m4f Grade 3 handicap chase were aged between seven and ten and had raced within the past 28 days. Backing all 68 qualifiers returned a profit of £53.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£92.76 at Betfair SP after 2% commission). This leaves us with a shortlist of Down Memory Lane, Classic Getaway, Kilbarry Saint and Dee Capo. Kilbarry Saint has yet to win away from Clonmel, prefers soft or heavy going and the mare still needs to prove that she can handle big fields over fences, so I’m happy to strike her from the list. Classic Getaway seems happiest dominating in small fields – his chase wins have come in fields of eight, six and three runners – and he can also be passed over. Dee Capo looks most interesting, having run respectably against the pace bias when mid-division behind Madara in the Plate at last month’s Cheltenham festival. It was desperately difficult to come from off the pace that day and we’ve already seen the patiently ridden 11th – Riskintheground – win next time out. Down Memory Lane also ran in the Plate, starting at just 11-2 but never getting into contention after being badly hampered at the first (he was eventually pulled up). He’s been beaten since but that was in Grade 2 company behind Energumene and, while his jumping remains a worry, especially in a big field, the first-time cheekpieces could help and I’ll be having a stake saver.
The other one I want to back is last year’s runner-up Riaan, a stable mate of Dee Capo. Gordon Elliott’s nine-year-old lacks a recent run and was arguably flattered when scoring at Sligo last time where he raced wide on the better ground. However, he’s clearly been laid out for another crack at this race and has a good record when fresh, recording form figures of 21420421 (2-8) when rested for at least six weeks since his latest start.
