3.54 Ripon – Dark Cloud Rising (1.5pt win – 2/1 bet365, William Hill, 15/8 Coral, Ladbrokes)
I’ve been banging on for some time about Dark Cloud Rising’s need for a small field and he had conditions to suit when recording a 13/2 success over Dark Thirty (Chester winner and Curragh runner-up since) in a seven-runner Class 2 handicap over the 6f trip at Ripon on his penultimate start. I was keen on his chances of following against just five rivals at Pontefract next time, but it was game over at the start as he missed the break and could never get involved behind Ruth Carr’s all-the-way winner Badri. His record in fields of 11 or fewer runners now reads 1371311513 (5-10), as compared to 84092805090U (0-12) in larger line-ups. David O’Meara’s four-year-old will be suited by the return to Ripon and drop down to Class 3 level. He should also have plenty of use made of him from a useful draw in stall 6 of 7. I’ve had a small saver on Rousing Encore.
4.54 Ripon – Amber Hamur (1pt win – 2/1 William hill, currently 3.85 (just over 11/4) on Betfair, so likely to drift)
Amber Hamur was just denied at Beverley when a bet for this column on July 3rd – her first run for Ed Bethell after leaving George Boughey’s care – which was a fine effort given the winner Hatamoto enjoyed the run of the race on the favoured rail. Hatamoto followed up at Thirsk and Amber Hamur went one better at Hamilton to further boost the form. The three-year-old is drawn widest of all in stall 8 of 8 today but has the tactical speed to get across and gain a good early position (she might even make the running) and looks capable of following up after receiving a sectional times upgrade for her Hamilton victory.
