Royal Ascot Racing Tips (Tuesday 16 June 2026)
Seven races begin at 2.30pm, with the Queen Anne Stakes the opening highlight. Read on for Andrew’s quintet of selections day 1 of the royal meeting.
2.30 Royal Ascot – More Thunder (1pt win – 4/1 generally) & Docklands (0.5pt e/w – 13/2 generally. This one could drift as he’s 9/1 on Betfair. Taking SP with Sky Bet, four places, is a fair angle)
More Thunder improved significantly for the switch to William Haggas last season, landing a pair of 6f handicaps on Newmarket’s Rowley Mile course before his unlucky head second to Get It in the Wokingham when the winner got first run. Wins over 7f in the Bunbury Cup and Group 2 Hungerford Stakes followed before his eye-catching fourth from a poor high draw in the Group 1 Prix de la Foret at Longchamp. The five-year-old entire ran a huge race when upped to 1m for the first time at Newbury on his reappearance, doing best of the closers when a two-length 9-1 second to Notable Speech in the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes.
Notable Speech lines up again but he’s under-performed in two runs here, finishing fourth to Docklands when 4-1 for this race 12 months ago and seventh of eight when 6-4 favourite for the 2024 St James’s Palace Stakes, while second favourite Opera Ballo was gifted an easy lead when scoring at Sandown and similar tactics won’t be helpful over this course and distance. This suggests that the obvious danger is last year’s winner Docklands. He’s much shorter in the betting this time around but Ascot form figures of 11322214 (3-8) suggesting he’ll be hard to keep out of contention. He followed his reappearance Doncaster win with a close-up third in Hong Kong and has had 51 days to recover from that effort.
3.40 Royal Ascot – American Affair (1pt e/w – 8/1 Coral, 15/2 Willim Hill, both paying five places)
I selected American Affair (11-1 from 20-1) when he won this race 12 months ago and I’m siding with Jim Goldie’s six-year-old once again. He didn’t run again last season after taking this race and would have needed his comeback when mid-division from a poor high draw in a hot 6f York handicap. The son of Washington DC showed plenty more in the Temple Stakes at Haydock when returned to his optimum 5f trip next time, finding only Night Raider too good when racing closer to the strong early pace than ideal (the winner/third both came from well in rear after missing the break). He’s likely to revert to exaggerating hold-up tactics here and stall 18 of 26 could be useful if the strong high-draw bias evident here last month is in play again. Progeny of his sire have hit the frame in nine of their 12 course outings, recording form figures of 402317123330 (2-12) for a profit of £7.00 to a £1 level stake at SP.
5.00 Royal Ascot – Tim Toe (25-1 Coral, Ladbrokes, five places, 20/1 generally, Sky Bet and Paddy Power paying fist six)
Henry De Bromhead is better known for his exploits over jumps but his 38 Flat runners in Britain have produced six winners for a profit of £21.50 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 2.54, A/E = 2.36). On turf only, the score is six from 29 (+£30.50) including last year’s Ascot Stakes winner Ascending (20-1). De Bromhead attempts to repeat the dose with Tim Toe whose four Flat runs – including one run in a bumper – have returned form figures of 1131 (3-4), with the sole defeat excusable as he was unsuited to the steady early gallop when a best-of-the-closers two-length third over 1m6f at Killarney. He surprised a few people when winning over 1m at Listowel last time and, while his stamina has to be taken on trust, he’s open to improvement and there’s compensation in offers of 20-1+.
5.35 Royal Ascot- Nahraan (1pt win – 8/1 Coral, Ladbrokes, BetVictor)
The Gosden yard has an excellent record in the Wolferton Stakes, a race in which those drawn in stalls 1, 2 and 3 traditionally struggled. The stable’s runners drawn in stall 4 or higher have retuned form figures of 117113803010 (5-12) for a profit of £20.50 to a £1 level stake at SP, suggesting that Nahraan (stall 9) is worth a punt a despite not having run yet this term. Oisin Murphy’s mount is three from three in Britain and his sole career defeat – when third in Group 3 company at Longchamp last September, was certainly no disgrace as the pair who beat him were Japanese Star Croix Du Nord (now rated 122) and Daryz (rated 124).
