MAYDANNY (1.15 Ascot, 1pt each-way 8/1)
MAYDANNY is a half-brother to the smart Elarqam and is superbly bred. He is bred to be much better than a mark of 90 in due course and he got his career back on track on seasonal return after a gelding operation in the summer with a very decisive success at Yarmouth.
The handicapper has not missed him for those exploits with a 10lb rise but such is the manner of the victory he is likely to be value for even more than that. You would be extremely disappointed if he did not rate much higher than a mark of 90 by the end of the season and there should be plenty more to come. The old cliché is that he could be a group horse in a handicap with the low draw the only concern.

BERLIN TANGO (1.50 Ascot, 5pts win 6/1)
Andrew Balding has been in flying form already this season and BERLIN TANGO makes plenty of appeal despite his 4lb penalty for a Group 3 win at Kempton when taking care of some useful rivals.
He is one of only two in this field that are confirmed to get the trip and he has already won at the level, and impressively I might add. He improved considerably for this step up in trip at Kempton despite being keen in the early stages but changed his legs (a sign of another gear) inside the final furlong of the race. That form was boosted by the runner-up yesterday winning the Group 2 King Edward stakes
That Kempton run should take the edge off him for this and with further improvement extremely likely he offers excellent value at the prices. Sir Michael Stoute has a great record in this race, so First Receiver is feared but he is priced up on the visual performance of his Kempton win on return, and that form is not up to too much.

BRIGHT MELODY (2.25 Ascot, 1pt each-way 15/2)
BRIGHT MELODY shaped better than the bare result behind Berlin Tango at Kempton and can make his first start in a handicap a winning one now upped in trip. That race is working out well and worth following. He ran green and had a look around when coming round the bend at Kempton so it’s a good sign to see connections reach for the blinkers. This move up to 1m4f is also of benefit to him and with nothing looking thrown in off their handicap marks it might pay to side with the classiest horse in the field and one that is likely to prove best long term.

HEADMAN (3.00 Ascot, 1pt win 11/2)
This is a tricky contest but I am keen to take on a favourite over a trip short of his best and who will likely need the run as he did last year.
The vibes about Japan weren’t strong in a recent interview so it could be HEADMAN who causes the upset here. I would have preferred him to have had a run but this looks like a good opportunity to claim his first Group 1 success.
He was much better than the bare result at Leopardstown last time out when beaten three lengths by Magical after a slow start and coming four wide around the bend. He will undoubtedly improve for a winter on his back and any recent rain won’t hinder his chances.

BELL ROCK (3.35 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 10/1)
BELL ROCK is thought highly of by connections and caught the eye last season running in some top class fields looking like he would want further than 1m. That might be the case going forward, especially after his late rally to grab Ouzo on the line at Newmarket first time out this season.
But the nature of this race will likely suit him and his strong finishing effort over this stiff 1m could be his secret weapon. The pace in this race is strong all over the course and he looks a different horse now he has been gelded and has more improvement in him.

FUJAIRA PRINCE (4.40 Ascot, 1pt win) – Fujaira Prince 9/2, Shailene 14/1
FUJAIRA PRINCE has been off the track since an excellent third at this meeting last year and for some time has screamed for a step up in trip. He had today’s second favourite Collide in behind that day off level weights and now gets 7lbs from that rival over a trip he is likely to improve for. He has gone well fresh previously so the absence should be of no concern. Any rain that falls to take the sting out of the ground will certainly benefit him and its very difficult to find any faults in his form that doesn’t suggest he is well handicapped. If on his game he has a huge chance.

SHAILENE (4.40 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 14/1)
SHAILENE might lack the class of the first mentioned but this mare has been steadily progressive in her career to date and this has always looked the right trip for her. She ran creditably on return in Group 3 company in a prep race for this and drops back into handicap company off a workable mark now over the right trip. She will need to be ridden prominently to get a good tow into the race and should be staying on at the finish.
