MONARCH OF EGYPT (2.25 Ascot, 1pt each-way 7/1)
MONARCH OF EGYPT has never been my sort of horse but he comes out best on ratings here and he was a bigeye catcher in the Irish 2,000 Guineas when getting no run at all from the rear. He finished on the bridle that day and considering his last four runs have come in Group 1 company, he offers great value dropped into a Group 3.
If forgiving his two runs at Newmarket, where he clearly didn’t handle the course, prior to his Guineas run his form figures would read 122 and two of those were at a higher level than he contests today. He often shaped like a step up to 7f would suit him and on the evidence of his seasonal return in the Irish 2,000 Guineas its likely he will improve for it.

FIRST PROPHET (3.00 Ascot, 0.5pts win 8/1)
A small chance is taken on FIRST PROPHET to build on his encouraging debut in what looks a tricky race. Plenty are open to improvement but Charlie Fellowes’ representative took care of a fancied Godolphin runner with the minimum of fuss despite showing signs of greenness at Newbury.
He hung his head to the right for much of the race but once James Doyle straightened him up he powered clear nicely. Normally this race throws up a useful sort and nothing has blown me away at the top of the market with their debut runs, so he is worth chancing.

ENEMY (4.40 Ascot, 1.5pts win 6/1)
This is a race to follow once the meeting is over as plenty in here have more to offer from their handicap marks, but the step up in trip is a big positive for the well-bred ENEMY.
He hasn’t been seen to best effect on his two runs to date over a trip far too short but it is to his credit he was able to win on debut. The form of that race when winning under a hands-and-heels ride suggests that a mark of 89 will certainly underestimate him and it’s likely he needed his run this season when a disappointing favourite (carefully handled) at Yarmouth. He is taken to make a mockery of this opening handicap mark with the extra furlong to suit.
