SETARHE (1.50 Ascot, 1,5pts each-way 7/1)
Plenty can take a step forward here but SETARHE did the job well at Newmaket when coming from the rear to stay on strongly in the closing stages despite not handling the course.
She was outpaced in the early stages but did well considering all the winners that day came up the stands side rail and won after being up with the pace. She took a while to pull-up that day and gave an immediate response to the jockey’s stick. She looks a useful one.
It’s interesting that trainer Roger Varian has used the same course to prep the selection as he did with last year’s winner Daahyeh, and this one looks potentially useful as well. She won’t mind any rain that has fallen being out of Footstepsinthesand and her Dam’s Sire Fast Company has produced plenty of soft ground specialists. She looks a useful one.

ANTHONY VAN DYCK (3.00 Ascot, 1.5pt win 9/4)
The drift doesn’t concern me at all with ANTHONY VAN DYCK who comes out well clear of the majority of the field on ratings and will have no concern with the recent rain given he won the Derby trial at Lingfield on soft ground.
His return run was encouraging behind the very smart Ghaiyyath at Newmarket and he can be forgiven some lacklustre performances last season.
His Irish Derby run was a freak result when he was held up too far off the pace and struggled to peg back his stablemate and pacemaker. Connections then applied headgear for his run here at Ascot which he clearly didn’t take to. He then runs a good third in the Irish Champion Stakes over a trip too short of 1m2f with headgear removed. Next time out he went back up to 1m4f he ran a blinding race in the Breeders’ Cup Turf to finish third after being denied a clear run. Connections then tried the headgear for some unknown reason next time at Sha Tin and he disappointed.
His last 6 runs have come in Group 1 Company and he holds valid excuses for the disappointing ones, dropped back into Group 2 Company today with a strong pace guaranteed he should get the race run to suit and everything looks in place for a big run.

PIERRE LAPIN (3.35 Ascot, 1pt win 4/1)
PIERRE LAPIN should be suited by this stiff six furlongs here and rates an exciting horse for the future. He showed plenty of signs of inexperience but the vibes are good about his chances today. His form doesn’t rate the strongest in the field but it would be folly to think there is not more to come from him this term.

ROYAL CRUSADE (3.35 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 18/1)
ROYAL CRUSADE looks to be the forgotten horse considering he was burning up Charlie Appleby’s yard last term earning quotes of “No horse could go with him” last the drop back to 6f looks the right move. His action suggests that this soft ground should suit him and his run at Saint Cloud in Group 3 Company suggests the trip move could beneficial.

PUNCTUATION (4.10 Ascot, 0.5pts each-way 33/1)
This is wide open and the ground holds question marks for many here and it would be of no surprise should the money come for Born With Pride. Although he has plenty to do on the figures PUNCTUATION is desperately wanting soft ground given his pronounced high knee action and given how impressive he was at Kempton its worth a small play each way. He takes a step back up in trip which looks the right move and he might just be able to dictate this field from the front and get away from them.
