Sandown & Goodwood Racing Tips - Joe Napier's Lucky 15 Tips for Saturday 29 August

Group race action takes place at three tracks in Britain and Ireland on Saturday. As well as that, nine races are live on ITV to enjoy.

GG tipster Joe Napier sticks to the terrestrial action for our Saturday lucky 15 tips. He has two apiece from Sandown and Goodwood.

Sandown Racing Tips (Saturday 29 August)

A pair of Group 3 races are run at Sandown this Saturday. One of our tips runs in the Group 3 Atalanta Stakes, with another selection earlier at the meeting.

2.15 Sandown – King’s Charter (1pt win – 13/2)

Despite the 7lb three-year-old allowance, that age group only have three wins in the last ten runnings of this. However, there is a runner with an unexposed profile a year older than that, which is King’s Charter. The Godolphin horse won twice last summer, impressing to win from in rear on the July Course. His only racing since has been at Meydan. His reappearance did not go smoothly, but he was ahead of recent runaway Group 3 winner Archivist in February when conceding that rival 7lb. While a literal reading of that form is foolish, Archivist was still a useful horse at that point in time. The selection was then fourth to him in March when conceding 9lb and has done most of his best work late. Having raced at 1m-1m1f the last twice, he is back up to 1m2f. There could still be room for him to rate higher even than 104. Charlie Appleby’s charge has gone well fresh before too.

2.50 Sandown – Moon Target (1pt win – 10/3)

All of Calendar Girl, Kon Tiki and Secret Of Life arrive here after impressive successes. However, the highest class form this term belongs to Moon Target even in defeat. The Cracksman filly quickly made it two wins from as many starts as a juvenile last term. She subsequently kept good company, finishing second to Irish 1000 Guineas heroine Precise when sent off favourite at Glorious Goodwood 2025. This term, she was a close fourth to Precise at 33/1 in the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot. She stepped forward again to be as close in third to that rival and Blue Bolt in a Group 1 at Deauville. She faces those aforementioned, progressive rivals, but she has already proven her talent at the top level. Down in class to a Group 3, she can gain a breakthrough Pattern race success.

Goodwood Racing Tips (Saturday 29 August)

The Group 2 Celebration Mile headlines the weekend’s racing in the UK and Ireland, though our two lucky 15 tips from Goodwood come elsewhere on the card.

2.35 Goodwood – High Degree (1pt win – 5/2)

There is clearly something about High Degree, who has gone off favourite for nine of his 11 races. That he has won only two is a disappointment, but one of those belatedly came most recently. In first-time cheekpieces, he saw out 1m2f well at Pontefract off a mark of 91. The handicapper was clearly wary of him, keeping his rating in the low 90s despite a string of defeats. Finally, a show of leniency comes after that success, as he is only up 4lb here. That looks light given he asserted well at Pontefract and the signs are good for him dealing with 1m4f. The cheekpieces are retained and he can find the next level to his form here.

14:35 Virgin Bet A Good Bet Handicap (GBBPlus Race)

3.45 Goodwood – Marquetry (1pt win – 9/2)

For a Saturday maiden on terrestrial TV, this does not look a strong race. Tropical Sands and Evening Call, arguably the best runners with experience, both lost three-runner races lat time out, while Chimes Of Thunder has had multiple chances. One of the debutants therefore appeals most in Marquetry. Andrew Balding has continued in good form even since York’s Ebor meeting. His filly boasts good credentials for a first-time-out winner. Her dam won by three lengths on debut in France. Arguably even better, her half-brother Kalaoun pushed subsequent Group 1 winner Leffard to a short-head on his racing bow. The daughter of Sottsass should be versatile regards any ground and has the right credentials to strike.
