It’s a real super Saturday of racing providing the National Hunt meetings pass morning inspections and Andrew Mount has picked out his best bets for Saturday 31 January from Sandown, Lingfield and Leopardstown.
Looking to fire in a host of winners our resident tipster has some eye-catching picks for the action on Saturday.
Sandown Racing Tips (Saturday 31 January 2026)
Sandown host a quality card on Saturday with the Scilly Isles Novices’ Chase the highlight. Check out Andrew’s two bets at the Esher venue.
1.25 Sandown – Norn Iron (1pt win – 4/1 bet365, Coral, Ladbrokes, BetVictor)
Harry Derham’s Norn Iron is hardly prolific, winning just once from nine starts but I thought there was plenty of encouragement to take from December’s seasonal/chase debut second behind the more experienced Chuggy at Warwick and two miles on good ground wasn’t ideal when beaten at odds-on at Plumpton next time. The step up to 2m4f on softer going promises to suit and the first-time tongue-tie is an interesting angle, as his trainer is 15 from 38 (39.5% strike-rate) when using this headgear for a profit of £9.36 to a £1 level stake at SP (expected winners = 9.39, A/E = 1.60). Those who started at 6-1 or shorter were 15 from 26 (57.7%) for a profit of £21.36.
3.10 Sandown – Santos Blue (0.5pt e/w – 12/1 bet365, Sky Bet and Paddy Power, all paying four places at the time of writing)
The Olly Murphy-trained Santos Blue tended to peak post-New Year when with Dan Skelton, recording form figures in the January to March period of 1110121 (5-7) for a profit of £26.38 to a £1 level stake at SP, and I’m betting on the pattern being repeated for his new yard. The nine-year-old has shaped well in both starts for his current handler, finishing a 40-1 fifth of 15 to French Ship at Newbury’s ‘Henessey’ meeting before a 9-1 sixth of ten at Chepstow on Welsh Grand National Day. He won third time out last term and, while he has plenty of weight, he’s worth a small each-way punt at double-digit odds. Last year’s runner-up Henri The Second was short-headed over the 2m4f trip here last time, clocking a fast time in the process, and is worth a saver.
Lingfield Racing Tips (Saturday 31 January 2026)
There’s a decent all-weather card at Lingfield and Andrew opts for a 1.5pt win selection in the 2.50pm contest.
2.50 Lingfield – Completely Random (1.5pt win – 100/30 William Hill, Ladbrokes, Coral)
The inside rail has ridden ‘dead’ at the last few Lingfield meetings (and indeed at the majority of them this winter) which puts me off Diligent Harry in the Listed Kachy Stakes as this front-runner could migrate to the ‘swamp’ from stall 4. I was concerned about stall 1 of 7 for Completely Random when he reappeared in a 6f Class 3 handicap over track and trip a fortnight ago, but Ryan Moore had this hold-up performer at least two wide all the way round and challenged widest of all when storming to a near four-length success. He was value for much more and today’s Listed contest will certainly be run to suit. Moore is up again, stall 7 of 7 should ensure that he avoids the deep stuff and Havana Grey progeny are now 31 from 120 (25.8%) in Lingfield (AW) sprints for a profit of £52.35 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£85.33 at Betfair SP after 2% commission).
Leopardstown Racing Tips (Saturday 31 January 2026)
Day 1 of the Dublin Racing Festival is hoping to be given the green light on Saturday and Andrew has one selection at Leopardstown.
3.30 Leopardstown – Stellar Story (0.5pt e/w – 28/1 bet365, Sky Bet, Paddy Power, all four places)
I gave favourable mentions to ‘rags’ Lecky Watson and Stellar Story on GG’s Weekend Watch this week and the biblical rainfall has persuaded me to bet the last-named, who is better equipped than most to handle the deep ground. Official going descriptions are notoriously unreliable but race times allow us to accurately assess underfoot conditions after the race and a Proform Going Adjustment of -5.0 or lower (ground deemed to be very soft, heavy, very heavy, extremely heavy, bottomless of extremely bottomless) has yielded form figures of 11324112 (4-8) for a profit of £36.30 to a £1 level stake at SP. The first-time blinkers could help. It’s worth remembering that he beat this season’s King George winner The Jukebox Man with conditions to suit in the 2024 Albert Bartlett (the pair, separated by just a head, finishing seven lengths of Dancing City in third, with Lecky Watson just behind in fifth) and he looks over-priced.
