Andrew Mount has fired in winners left, right and centre this week and he looks to have a sparkling Saturday. He heads to Sandown’s Coral-Eclipse meeting and the action at the Newmarket for his best bets on 4th July.
Check out Andrew’s four selections for a cracking day’s racing.
Sandown Racing Tips (Saturday 4 July 2026)
There’s a mouth-watering seven-race card at Sandown, with a 1.50pm start. Andrew has a trio of picks across the afternoon.
1.50 Sandown – Rumstar (1pt win – 3/1 bet365, Paddy Power, 11/4 generally)
Asfoora’s record in Europe below Group 1 level reads 42700 (0-5) and my interpretation of her run in the 5f Group 3 Coral Charge is that it’s her final prep race before another crack at next month’s Nunthorpe Stakes at York. At the time of writing, she was trading as the 9-4 favourite and I’m taking her on with last year’s winner Rumstar, who has form figures on tracks with stiff uphill finishes of 1341570011010 (5-13) for a profit of £19.70 to a £1 level stake at SP, with three of the defeats coming in Group 1 company at Ascot, including last time out when a poor-drawn 25-1 shot in the Golden Jubilee Stakes. The return to this venue and drop in class will help and, given how he appreciates having plenty of room in his races, I like his draw in stall 9 of 10. I’ve saved on stall 10 runner Getreadytorumble, also down the field when poorly drawn in the Golden Jubilee and will play the pair in a reversed Exacta.
2.25 Sandown – Indalo (1pt win – 4/1 William Hill, 7/2 generally)
When I first looked at the 1m Coral Challenge earlier in the week I was very confident about the prospects of Indalo and envisaged him going off between 7-4 and 5-2 as I had expected the race to cut up. However, 17 runners are due to go to post and to complicate matters further only one of them – River King (stall 2), can be relied upon to make the running which could lead to a steady early gallop and traffic problems. River King will understandably have his fans, but Indalo (stall 3) is well drawn to track the likely pacesetter and he’s worth a 1pt win bet. Roger Varian’s five-year-old recorded a smooth success over course and distance last July and his made in the frame in his five subsequent outings, including his fine best-of-the-low-draws third in the Royal Hunt Cup at Ascot on his latest assignment, a race that is a key pointer to today’s contest. In the past ten years simply backing geldings who finished between second and eighth in the Royal Hunt Cup last time out would have found 14 winners from 65 bets for a profit of £34.03 to a £1 level stake at SP (+£57.69 at Betfair SP after 2% commission, expected wins = 9.37, A/E = 1.49). The last three qualifiers who were in the top six in the betting at Royal Ascot and ran in the Coral Challenge next time out– Montatham, Magical Morning and Sinjaari – all won (6-5, 13-2 and 7-2 respectively). Cases can be made for several others, not least Cerulean Bay and Ozat, also poorly drawn in the Royal Hunt Cup, but I’ll keep it simple and go for the win on Indalo.
4.10 Sandown – King’s Cavalry (1pt win – 11/8)
Five of the last ten winners of this 7f handicap were drawn in stalls 1 or 2 and stall 2 runner King’s Cavalry fits the bill. James Tate’s three-year-old is also a good statistical fit for this Class 3 contest as he ran in a Class 4 handicap on his latest start – such runners are six from 24 in that past ten years for a profit of £14.25 to a £1 level stake at SP. Those qualifiers who finished in the top four last time were five from 15 (+£18.75), with the winners drawn in stalls 1, 2, 2, 3 and 8. The son of Kingman caught the eye on his sole two-year-old assignment, running green when a 50-1 sixth of 15 at Newmarket and has since finished second on his three-year-old debut before scoring over 7f at Leicester and Doncaster. On the face of it his nose verdict when 10-11 for a Class 4 handicap doesn’t look great but his prominent style was at a disadvantage that day (the runner-up/third both came from well off the pace) and it was a good effort in the circumstances).
Newmarket Racing Tips (Saturday 4 July 2026)
Another seven races take place at Newmarket on Saturday. However, you have to wait until the 4.25pm race for Andrew’s best bet at Flat HQ.
4.25 Newmarket – Silver Ghost (1pt win – 5/2 William hill, 9/4 generally)
Silver Ghost looked desperately unlucky not to score on the Rowley Mile course here in mid-May, allowing the winner first run and challenging very wide, well away from the favoured near side rail before going down by a neck in second place. Emma Lavelle’s four-year-old now has form figures across the two Newmarket tracks of 3221632 (1-7), with the sixth place better than it looked as she actually did second best in her group. Main market rival Akkadian Thunder is one I don’t mind backing each-way at a big price on straight tracks but he’s rarely one to take a short price about and has never won on turf away from Doncaster.
