Sandown Racing Tips (Saturday 7 March)
Sandown’s is the final meeting with a feature race prior to the Cheltenham Festival in Britain. In the Imperial Cup and three other races, we have tips for our lucky 15.
1.50 Sandown – Unknown Entity (1pt e/w – 6/1)
After pushing a useful horse close last time, Unknown Entity is ready to secure another tidy pot for Dan Skelton. A former Willie Mullins-trained horse, he was third on stable debut for Skelton at Ludlow in December. That was promising enough behind a talented winner, btu it also came after 350 days off the track. He improved to be beaten a neck by Gaelic Pride, an odds-on favourite who has won under a penalty since. That rival is rated 125 and had much more experience going into that contest. As such, the selection, who is rated just 120 here, has a lot going for him as he looks likely to improve and the step up to 2m4f in distance should also be a positive.
2.27 Sandown – Wreckless Eric (1pt e/w – 15/2)
As long as the ground is soft at worst, Wreckless Eric is weighted to prosper. The O’Neill runner was second in this contest a year ago as a five-year-old. That spoke well to his future prospects, but he has not yet been able to kick on. However, there have been reasonable excuses in every race since. Two attempts over 2m4f-2m5f appear to have been inconveniently long races, while he likely needed his return at Ascot in December. Most recently, he ran better than the bare result in the William Hill Hurdle at Newbury. Not only would it have been impossible to live with the winner, but the heavy ground wiped out many other rivals worse than the selection, who only folded late on when finishing sixth. He is down another 2lb in the handicap, meaning he is 3lb lower than when runner-up in 2025. That makes him 8lb better off with the winner Go Dante and 2lb better off with the third Afadil. If first-time cheekpieces offer an even greater benefit, he has a great chance.
3.00 Sandown – Kamille Au Kanada (1pt e/w – 14/1)
Anthony Honeyball’s record in this mares’ bumper is excellent. This decade, he has trained the 2020 winner and had other horses place at 40/1 and 18/1 from just four attempts. As such, point-to-point winner Kamille Au Kanada catches the eye. She was first past the post (disqualified first time) in that sphere between the sticks. Across her two starts, she won by a combined 30 lengths for Donnachadh Doyle and Rob James. That pair are strong in the pointing field, so likely believe this mare is talented. She fetched £72,000 at the Newbury sales in November and has a true National Hunt pedigree. She could bely rules inexperience to be involved.
3.35 Sandown – Tune In A Box (1pt e/w – 13/2)
Tom Lacey’s Tune In A Box has dropped to a compellingly low mark for this handicap chase. He was third at this level last time out behind a runaway winner who is now a Cheltenham Festival contender. The grey is down another 1lb having yet to show his best over fences. However, last time out at Newbury was much more like it in ground that would have been soft enough. He is a stayer nowadays and is 9lb lower than when second at Uttoxeter last May. The handicapper appears to finally be relenting after his 2024 Punchestown Festival success.
