Among a packed card of quality at Haydock on Saturday, the Group 2 Sandy Lane Stakes could give more Royal Ascot clues than any other weekend race. The 6f sprint is the key British trial for the Commonwealth Cup.
GG tipster Joe Napier previews this year’s running, siding with a runner representing a stable in form.

Venetian Sun was the most successful of this field as a juvenile. She landed the Group 1 Prix Morny at Deauville, beating Gstaad no less, before finding Precise too good over 7f. She was only 11th in the 1000 Guineas when failing to see out 1m on her return. It is best to forgive that effort, but there are some strong rivals for her to face here.
Similarly, Spicy Marg was a non-stayer in the Guineas, but still finished in front of Karl Burke’s charge. That brings mixed signals, for all that Michael Bell’s filly could contend here.
Coppull and Division were split by just half-a-length at Ascot last time out. The former was well-beaten by Venetian Sun last season but has demonstrably trained on. However, Division missed the break that day and could easily reverse the form for his in-form yard. The son of Kingman won at Haydock easily as a two-year-old and has significant potential to improve.
Brussels has a poor winning rate for Aidan O’Brien and was lacklustre on return at Ascot behind that pair. He may still have more to offer. The same can be said of Rock On Thunder on his notable York form, though he finished last season poorly and is making his reappearance here.
Aqpan looks up against it after finishg well down the field at Newbury twice this campaign. Conversely, Five Ways was not far behind Brussels and Coppull in the Group 1 Middle Park Stakes last term and returned against his elders in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket. Though he was mid-division, he ran respectably, and may offer more again back up to 6f against fellow three-year-olds.

- Only three of the last ten favourites have been successful

2026 Sandy Lane Stakes Tips
Venetian Sun easily beat Coppull last season, but although she did not stay in the 1000 Guineas, her effort still saw her finish behind Spicy Marg, who is a much bigger price here. There are mixed signals throughout the form, but Division may come out on top. He was beaten half-a-length by Coppull in the Commonwealth Cup Trial at Ascot. However, he was slowly away and may improve significantly. Five Ways is respected at each-way odds too.
