How’s The Guvnor was beaten by four lengths when runner-up in a 7f handicap at Lingfield last time, but he made the running on the ‘dead’ inside rail, and he impressed me by rallying to finish a clear second after looking set to be swamped. His earlier close-up 8.6f Wolverhampton fourth o American State was franked by subsequent wins for the runner-up/third, and he was a winner over C&D on his latest visit to today’s venue. The Jennie Candlish-trained five-year-old has form figures over 7f+ on the all-weather since hooded of 33211342 (2-8).
2.32 Southwell – Spirit Of Bowland (1pt win – 9/4 generally)
Spirit Of Bowland has never won in the depths of winter but has form figures on the all-weather in March to May of 4111814 (3-7) for a profit of £23.70 to a £1 level stake at SP. When running over 7f-1m after a recent outing (within four weeks) his springtime synthetics score becomes 1111 (4-4). The Tony Culhane and Stella Barclay-trained, whose four wins have come over today’s 1m trip (two at this venue), found 7f too sharp when fifth here just eight days ago and can regain the winning thread in this modest contest.
