With the UK National Hunt action abandoned due to the cold snap it’s Southwell that takes centre stage for Andrew Mount on Sunday 4 January.
Our top tipster has three tips for the racing on Sunday and we look through his selections for what should be a competitive day’s action.
Southwell Racing Tips (Sunday 4 January 2026)
There’s a bumper nine races taking place at Southwell, with the action kicking off at 1.00pm and going right through until 5.05pm. Check out Andrew’s trio of selections below.
1.30 Southwell – Panelli (1pt win – 12/1 bet365)
Panelli’s sole win for George Boughey came over 1m on Lingfield’s Polytrack and he was a huge eyecatcher over an inadequate 5f trip at Chelmsford on his debut for Stuart Williamd early last month, staying on well from off the pace to finish a four-length sixth of ten in a race that favoured early speed. Sent off at 20-1n tat day, he was a 40-1 shot when lining up in a hot 6f Class 2 handicap back at Chelmsford next time, where he did well to finish eighth of 14 from a poor high draw, again making late headway. Today’s step back up to 7f will suit and while the return to Tapeta might not be 100% ideal on breeding, there’s compensation in the price.
3.00 Southwell – Ziggy’s Triton (1pt win – 100/30 Betfred, 3/1 generally)
Ziggy’s Triton is two from four over the straight 5f trip at Southwell and is arguably unlucky not to be unbeaten. David O’Meara’s four-year-old finished a one-length second of 12 to a 71-rayed Sturlasson (now rated 89), third by half a length under a less-than-inspired ride in an apprentice handicap, first and first. He won with plenty in hand here on December 28th and can complete his hat-trick.
5.05 Southwell – Rosemary’s Rose (0.5pt e/w 12/1 Sky Bet, four places, 14/1 generally, three places)
The form of the 1m2f Chelmsford handicap won by Tommy’s Promise on December 4th is working out well, with the four subsequent runners producing two winners (8-1 and 11-8), a second (20-1) and a third (11-2). Today it is the turn of Rosemary’s Rose, a hampered 16-1 ninth of 12 in that race on her final start for Alice Haynes. The four-year-old is a nine-race maiden but the return to 1m will suit on her debut for Rod Millman and she’s bred to appreciate this switch to Tapeta.
