Race Details: 1m 6f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This is not a deep race, but it is the sort of low-grade staying handicap that can still tie punters in knots. Nymphaea heads the market on consistency rather than brilliance, while Yakhabar and Angelardo come here with recent bits of form that make plenty of appeal in a contest of this standard. Bronte Beach has become hard to trust despite a fair yard, and veterans like Cogital and Prince Abu need to show they still retain enough spark. Hiccups is interesting returning from a break after ending last year in decent nick, and Star Of Jupiter has claims if resuming in the same mood. With Regal Glory a non-runner, it looks a slightly thinner puzzle than first appeared, but it is still a race where attitude and stamina will matter as much as raw ability.
Top Selections
1. Yakhabar – 9/2 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Miss Amy Collier | Trainer: Liam Bailey | Form: 70-914 | Rating: 42 | Topspeed: 34
Yakhabar looks the solid win play in a race where very few arrive with much momentum. He got his head in front two starts back and backed that up with a respectable fourth, so the recent profile is healthier than plenty of these. Off a mark of 42, he does not have to improve much to take this, especially as he is one of the few in here who has shown he can still put a race together. Liam Bailey also runs Angelardo, but this one appeals as the more dependable option right now. At 9/2, he is hardly a gift in a Class 6 like this, but he still makes most appeal. Bet: WIN
2. Hiccups – 12/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Mr Cameron Hillhouse | Trainer: Tony Forbes | Form: 46124- | Rating: 46 | Topspeed:
Hiccups is the each-way angle at a much more tempting price. He signed off last year with figures of 1, 2 and 4 in his final three starts, which is stronger recent substance than many of these can offer, and his mark of 46 is certainly workable in this basement grade. The slight concern is the absence, but in a race lacking reliable stayers with current form, he is exactly the sort you can forgive that for. Tony Forbes does not need to have him improving to get involved; a repeat of last autumn’s level could easily see him hit the frame. At 12/1, he looks overpriced for an each-way punt. Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Yakhabar is the straightforward win bet because he brings the best recent balance of form and reliability to a poor race. Hiccups is the each-way alternative at double-figure odds, especially with four places on offer. Nymphaea is the obvious danger if you want to keep things simple, while Angelardo also has enough recent form to feature if building on his latest run.

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This is a modest enough Class 6, but not an impossible race to get a handle on. Roman Secret arrives on the back of a win and is the obvious starting point from stall 1, while Recobella also shaped well on her return and looks a solid player back in the same sort of grade. Arranmore comes here after getting his head back in front and is weighted to be competitive again, whereas The Bay Warrior has become one of those regulars who keeps hinting his turn is near without quite delivering. Cloudside Rock is respected for David Simcock after a break, but his profile is a little patchy. In a race where recent sharpness could matter, I’d rather side with the pair who come here off encouraging efforts than trust the more speculative types.
Top Selections
1. Roman Secret – 7/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Alec Voikhansky | Trainer: Kevin Frost | Form: 2367-1 | Rating: 70 | Topspeed: 61
Roman Secret looks the percentage call. He returned from a break to win last time and did it with the best recent Topspeed figure in this field, which matters in a race lacking depth. A 5lb rise asks a question, but he still sits on a mark of 70 and this doesn’t look a deeper contest than the one he won. The inside draw is another plus around Southwell, and Alec Voikhansky should be able to hold a handy position without wasting ground. At 7/2 he is not being missed by the market, but he still makes plenty of appeal as the runner with the clearest current momentum. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Recobella – 7/2 with Betfair
Jockey: Cam Hardie | Trainer: Philip Kirby | Form: 1277-3 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 43
Recobella is the each-way alternative, especially in an eight-runner race with three places on offer. She made a perfectly fair return when third on her latest start and that reads well enough in the context of this contest, given several of these arrive with shakier profiles. She races from just 1lb lower than Roman Secret and has a handy middle draw, so there are no obvious excuses on paper. Cam Hardie is a rider you want onside in this grade and, if she can build on that comeback run, she should be right in the mix again. Around 7/2 is not massive, but she looks one of the likelier solid place candidates. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Roman Secret is the win play after that recent success, with his current sharpness and useful draw making him hard to oppose in a race of this level. Recobella is the each-way punt in an eight-runner field, as she looks reliable enough to hit the frame if building on her reappearance third. The main dangers are Arranmore, who arrives off a win, and The Bay Warrior, who is edging back towards a workable level.

Race Details: 1m 3f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This doesn’t look a deep novice by any means, but it does have a fairly obvious shape to it. Pure Moon sets the standard on the figures after a pair of runner-up efforts and is the one they all have to beat if seeing out this longer trip. Heroics is the other 3yo with the right sort of profile, having shown ability in both starts, while Al Za’Ama is interesting for a yard that knows the time of day even if his form has been a bit mixed. The older horses Moonrunner and Too Farhh Gone get weight concessions no longer and bring solid enough ratings, but both may just lack the upside of the principals. In short, it’s not a vintage contest, though there are a couple of progressive sorts here and that should decide it.
Top Selections
1. Pure Moon – 11/10 with Betfair
Jockey: Jack Mitchell | Trainer: Tom Clover | Form: 2-2 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 34
Pure Moon is the percentage call. He has already posted the best rating in the field, arrives off two runner-up efforts and, crucially, looks the one most likely to improve again now stepping up to 1m3f. This restricted novice does not scream depth and he won’t need to be anything out of the ordinary to get the job done. Stall 1 should help Jack Mitchell hold a handy position around Southwell, and Tom Clover’s colt has shown enough professionalism to suggest he can cope with Tapeta. At around 11/10 he is hardly a hidden gem, but he is still hard to oppose given what the others have achieved so far. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Heroics – 9/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Grace McEntee | Trainer: Alan King | Form: 42- | Rating: 70 | Topspeed:
Heroics makes plenty of each-way appeal in a race where the market may focus heavily on the favourite. Alan King’s gelding shaped with promise in both starts last year, particularly when finishing second on his latest outing, and his mark of 70 leaves him with something to work with against these. He doesn’t have to find a mountain on the bare numbers and he strikes me as the type who could appreciate this sort of trip now back from a break. Grace McEntee takes over and, in a field of eight, 9/2 looks fair enough for a horse with a solid juvenile foundation and more progress potentially to come. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Keep it simple: Pure Moon is the win bet because he brings the strongest form and sets the standard on ratings. Heroics is the each-way play at a much more workable price, especially with three places on offer in an eight-runner field. The main dangers are Al Za’Ama if improving for Andrew Balding and Too Farhh Gone, who has at least shown a bit of consistency.

Race Details: 7f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
A compact seven-runner handicap, but not a straightforward one. Jimmy Speaking arrives on the back of a win and is easy to see why he heads the market, though a 7lb rise and stall 7 ask a different question this time. Packetofbiscuits has a solid enough profile for this grade and is one of the more obvious threats, while Commander Of Life keeps knocking on the door without quite getting his head in front. The interesting angle may be with those on handy marks rather than the one carrying top weight. State Of Madness has the best Topspeed figure in the field and is weighted to get involved if bouncing back, while King Of Ithaca and Jersey Maverick are not without hope in a race where track position over this sharp 7f could prove decisive. Tricky rather than deep.
Top Selections
1. State Of Madness – 11/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Jack Mitchell | Trainer: Mark Loughnane | Form: 4-3259 | Rating: 91 | Topspeed: 86
He is the one that makes most appeal at the prices. The latest ninth does not look pretty on paper, but his earlier efforts this year suggested he was well up to winning a race of this nature, and that Topspeed mark of 86 is the best on offer here. Drawn in stall 2 and carrying just 128, he should get the run of things if Jack Mitchell can hold a handy position early. In a race where the favourite has to prove he can defy top weight again, State Of Madness looks overpriced at 11/1 and very much the value play. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Commander Of Life – 11/2 with Bet365
Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Jessica Macey | Form: 224243 | Rating: 91 | Topspeed: 78
Few arrive in better nick than Commander Of Life, even if he has become a touch frustrating. His recent form figures tell the story: he keeps running his race, keeps hitting the frame, and he is usually there or thereabouts at this level. From stall 5 he should have options, and Paul Mulrennan is the sort to make efficient use of that draw. He does not have masses in hand from a handicap perspective, but in a race lacking many convincing alternatives after the principals, his consistency counts for plenty. At around 11/2, he makes obvious each-way appeal for those wanting something a little safer than a swing at a bigger price.
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
State Of Madness is the win play at double-figure odds, with his low weight and standout Topspeed figure making him the most interesting proposition. Commander Of Life is the sensible each-way option given how regularly he hits the frame. Jimmy Speaking is the clear danger after that latest win, while Packetofbiscuits also has the profile to be involved if getting a smooth trip.

19:30 – Free Race Replays On attheraces.com Handicap
Race Details: 6f | Class 4 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This looks a tight little 6f handicap rather than a race full of lurking improvers, and the market has understandably clustered around the solid recent form of Stanley Spencer, Roberto Caro and Station X. The latter pair arrive off perfectly respectable efforts, while Stanley Spencer has been knocking loudly on the door and is drawn well enough to get involved again. Alondra is interesting back in this company off a light weight, and Alpha Magic has the ability to outrun his price if building on his reappearance. Still, this feels like the kind of Southwell sprint where track position and timing matter as much as raw ability. It is competitive, but not impossible to solve, and there are two that make more appeal than the rest.
Top Selections
1. Stanley Spencer – 3/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: James Tate | Form: 786392 | Rating: 94 | Topspeed: 68
He has been shaping like a winner waiting to happen and his latest second reads well in the context of this race. The form string does not scream superstar, but it does show a horse coming to the boil, and James Tate’s sprinters are always worth noting around Southwell when they begin to stack solid runs together. From stall 4, Clifford Lee should be able to keep things simple and hold a handy pitch. At 3/1 he is hardly a hidden gem, but he is the runner with the fewest questions to answer and he looks the percentage call in a race where several of his rivals are threatening rather than delivering. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Alondra – 9/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Silvestre De Sousa | Trainer: Scott Dixon | Form: -11253 | Rating: 94 | Topspeed: 78
Alondra is the one that makes each-way appeal because she is operating consistently, carries only 129, and has a much more convincing recent profile than her price suggests. Two wins earlier in the sequence showed she can finish her race off properly, and her last two efforts have been perfectly respectable in defeat rather than disappointing. Silvestre De Sousa is exactly the sort you want on a filly like this in a tactical sprint, especially from stall 3 where she can be smuggled into the race. At 9/1 with three places on offer, she looks a sensible each-way punt against a few shorter-priced rivals who are beginning to look expensive for what they have actually achieved. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Stanley Spencer is the win play because he brings the most reliable recent form and looks ready to strike. For an each-way alternative, Alondra makes plenty of sense at the prices given her consistency and handy racing weight. The obvious dangers are Roberto Caro, who has been running creditably, and Station X, another with strong claims if the race unfolds his way.

20:00 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap
Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This is a tight little 7-runner sprint rather than a deep one, and the market has understandably centred on Style King, Spirit Of Jenny and Initial Blue. Style King arrives on the back of a solid second and has the services of Silvestre De Sousa, while Spirit Of Jenny shaped well enough on her return to suggest she is ready to strike. Initial Blue is the one with the strongest recent body of form, though he does need to shrug off a below-par latest run. Behind them, Velvet Skies and What What What have bits and pieces of form that give them a squeak if the principals underperform. In a race lacking much depth, track position and who gets the cleanest run in the final furlong could easily prove decisive.
Top Selections
1. Spirit Of Jenny – 3/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Clifford Lee | Trainer: Steph Hollinshead | Form: 2378-2 | Rating: 75 | Topspeed: 49
She looks the percentage call. That comeback second after a break was a good sign in the context of this race, especially as she had shown enough last year to suggest a mark of 75 is workable in this grade. Drawn in stall 1, she should get a handy tow into the race and Clifford Lee is more than capable of delivering her late if they go hard enough early. She does not have the flashiest Topspeed figure in the field, but this is Class 6 company and reliability counts for plenty. At 3/1, she makes more appeal than some similarly priced rivals because her latest effort hinted there is still a bit left in the locker. Bet: WIN
2. Velvet Skies – 13/2 with Paddy Power
Jockey: Conor Whiteley | Trainer: Stephen Hanlon | Form: 235789 | Rating: 74 | Topspeed: 69
He is not exactly arriving in peak form, but this is the sort of race where an each-way punt on a well-treated sprinter makes sense. Velvet Skies has the joint-best recent Topspeed number of those near the head of the weights and, on older efforts, he is certainly capable of being involved off 74. The recent sequence is untidy, no question, but the market has reacted and 13/2 feels a fair price in a 7-runner race where only a handful make serious appeal. If he can sit just off the pace from stall 4 and travel a bit sweeter than he has lately, he is the one I can see sneaking into the frame at the very least. Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Spirit Of Jenny is the win play after that encouraging return, and she looks the most solid option in a race where not many arrive in compelling form. For an each-way alternative, Velvet Skies is worth chancing at the bigger price. Style King is the obvious danger on his latest second, while Initial Blue is respected if forgiving his last run.

20:30 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Handicap
Race Details: 6f | Class 6 | Going: Standard (Tapeta) | | flat
This is a modest but fairly competitive 3yo handicap to close the card, and there are a few with obvious chances without anything looking bombproof. Marra Donna sets the standard on recent form after a string of solid efforts, while Taaklam also arrives in good order and The Tunguska Event has already shown he can get his head in front. Obsidian Verse represents a yard you always note in these races, but stall 12 is not ideal over this trip, while Barry The Worm is interesting on his final 2yo success after a break. In truth, this looks more of a trappy Class 6 than a strong one, and it may come down to who gets the smoothest passage and can travel best into the straight.
Top Selections
1. Marra Donna – 16/5 with Betfair
Jockey: Sean D Bowen | Trainer: Ollie Sangster | Form: 9-3332 | Rating: 73 | Topspeed: 70
Marra Donna is hardly hiding from the assessor, but she keeps running her race and this does not look the deepest Class 6 you will ever see. Her recent figures of 3332 tell the story: reliable, competitive and knocking loudly at the door. A topspeed figure of 70 is the best on offer here and that matters in a race where several of these are still proving what they actually are. Drawn in 5, she should have every chance to sit handy and strike at the right time. At 16/5 she is not a giveaway, but she is the one with the clearest, strongest claims. Bet: WIN
Bet: WIN
2. Belling The Cat – 12/1 with Bet365
Jockey: Andrew Mullen | Trainer: Tony Coyle & Kaine Wood | Form: 66-624 | Rating: 69 | Topspeed: 65
If you want something at a price, Belling The Cat makes plenty of each-way appeal. He is not obviously ahead of the handicapper, but he has been shaping as though a race like this is within reach, especially with recent form figures of 624 suggesting he is holding his level well. The big eye-catcher is the feather weight of 119, which could be handy late on if this turns into a proper burn-up. He is also not badly berthed in 9 and his topspeed of 65 puts him closer to the principals than the market implies. At 12/1, he looks the value each-way punt in a race full of ifs and buts. Bet: EACH-WAY
Bet: EACH-WAY
Betting Strategy
Marra Donna is the solid one and the straight win bet in a race lacking depth. For an each-way alternative, Belling The Cat looks overpriced given his recent consistency and low weight. The obvious dangers are Taaklam, who should be thereabouts again, and The Tunguska Event, who arrives after a win and a solid second.
