Southwell Racing Tips & Predictions – Tuesday 7th April 2026

Southwell racing tips are front and centre for a tidy five-race Flat card this Tuesday (7th April 2026). We don’t get official going or distances in the race feed today, but Southwell’s surface demands a very particular kind of runner: you want pace, balance, and a horse who travels without being asked — because if you’re off the bridle early here, you’re basically done.

The headline act is the 19:00 Sky Sports Racing Mile Series Final (Class 2), where the market is deep and the form is strong. Earlier on, there’s a cracking little Class 4 at 18:00 where the odds scream “competitive”, but our data analysis still points to a couple who look a shade ahead of their prices.

From the course-specialist list, Castan (4 runs here, 1 win, 50% place rate) and Blue Lakota (5 runs, 1 win) are the obvious Southwell regulars in action. On the jockey front, Hector Crouch (22.11% win rate at the track) is always worth noting, while James Tate (26.15% wins; 55.38% placed at Southwell) is the trainer I want onside when the chips are down. Plenty of angles, plenty of bets — proper Southwell racing tips territory.

16:55 – Download The At The Races App Fillies’ Handicap

Race Details: Distance | Class 5 | Going | Prize Money | Race Type: flat

This is a 9-runner fillies’ handicap where the market has latched onto recent winning form, and frankly it’s hard to argue. Galileo Charm arrives as the obvious progressive three-year-old (form 4-6321), and the numbers back that up: she’s top-rated in the field on 69 and she’s got enough tactical speed to hold a position. The main threat looks the consistent Pickersgill, who ran well when second last time (00-472) and owns a solid 60 topspeed figure, right in the mix for this grade.

What makes this race tricky is the mid-division of lightly raced three-year-olds — they can improve, but they can also look like they’ve never seen the place. If you’re hunting a price, you’re basically betting on a step forward rather than proven output. For Southwell racing tips, I’m keeping it simple: side with the filly in form and use the more battle-hardened one as the each-way anchor.

Top selections

WIN – Galileo Charm (Jockey: Robert Havlin | Trainer: Marco Botti | Form: 4-6321 | Rating: 69 | Draw: | Weight: 132)

She’s the one the market can’t ignore and I’m not going to be the hero trying to beat her. That last-time win (the “1” on the end of 4-6321) is exactly what you want coming into a Class 5: a filly who’s learned how to win rather than one who flatters to deceive. Her rating of 69 already puts her right at the top of this field and the opposition isn’t stacked with fast figures either. The price is short enough (best of 85/40 on Betfair), but in a race where several have topspeed numbers in the 20s and 30s, she rates the clear pick. Robert Havlin is a proper Southwell operator too (18.55% strike rate here in our data sources), which is a nice extra.

EACH-WAY – Pickersgill (Jockey: Lewis Edmunds | Trainer: Iain Jardine | Form: 00-472 | Rating: 68 | Draw: | Weight: 141)

Pickersgill is the solid one to keep you out of trouble. She’s already posted a topspeed of 60, which is right up there in this line-up, and her recent second suggests she’s back on an upward curve after those two duck eggs earlier in the string. At 10/3 with Bet365 she’s not a monster price, but with 9 runners and three places on offer (1/5 odds), she looks a sensible each-way play behind the favourite. Lewis Edmunds can be patient — and you’ll need that if Galileo Charm gets first run — but Pickersgill should be finishing her race better than most of these. Honest sort, strong claims to hit the frame.

Betting strategy

Keep it tight: Galileo Charm is the win bet even at a shortish price, because she’s the one with momentum and the top rating. If you want an insurance policy, Pickersgill each-way makes sense with three places available. I’m not piling into the outsiders here — too many need to find chunks of improvement on our data.

17:30 – Sky Sports Racing Sky 415 Handicap

Race Details: Distance | Class 5 | Going | Prize Money | Race Type: flat

Nine runners again, but this is a different kettle of fish: higher ratings clustered together and several with proper speed figures. The one that jumps off the page on our numbers is Blue Lakota — a topspeed of 81 is the best in the field and in these Southwell handicaps that matters because it tells you a horse can actually quicken. Binadham is the obvious market leader at around 11/4, and that’s fair: he’s rated 87, consistent (342-63), and you can see why Kevin Philippart De Foy has him here with Daniel Muscutt.

Course form is a nice sweetener too: Castan has a 50% place rate at Southwell in our reputable data sources, and Toomuchforme is also a track winner. But both are priced as if they need plenty to fall right, and I’m not convinced this sets up for late closers if the pace is sensible. For Southwell racing tips, I want the horse with the standout speed number and the one with the profile to run his race.

Top selections

WIN – Blue Lakota (Jockey: Jack Callan | Trainer: Kevin Ryan | Form: -21634 | Rating: 86 | Draw: | Weight: 134)

This is a proper “numbers horse”. Blue Lakota’s topspeed 81 is clear best in the field and it’s not a marginal edge either — the next tier are in the 70s. In a Class 5 where plenty are closely matched on ratings, that’s the sort of separator I trust. He’s also a course winner (1 win from 5 here in our course specialist list), so you’re not guessing about whether he handles the place. Jack Callan has a healthy Southwell record too (18.92% win rate), and at 3/1 with Bet365 I think that’s fair for the horse with the best raw speed and proven suitability. Hard to oppose if he gets anything like a clean run.

EACH-WAY – Castan (Jockey: Paul Mulrennan | Trainer: Bryan Smart | Form: 53-228 | Rating: 86 | Draw: | Weight: 134)

Castan isn’t flashy, but he’s the type I like each-way at Southwell: keeps turning up and running to a level. He’s got a strong topspeed of 76, he’s bang there on ratings, and the big thing is he’s a track regular who’s placed in half his Southwell starts (2 from 4). You can get 13/2 with Paddy Power which is more than workable in a 9-runner race paying three places. If Blue Lakota is the one I want to win, Castan is the one I want on my side in case the favourite doesn’t quite fire. Looks booked for a minor role, but that’s exactly what we’re buying.

Betting strategy

Win bet: Blue Lakota at 3/1 is a straightforward play given the standout topspeed and course win. Each-way: Castan at 13/2 with three places is sensible if you want a bit of cover. If you’re playing exotics, keep Binadham onside as the solid, consistent danger at the head of the market.

18:00 – Sky Sports Racing Virgin 512 Handicap

Race Details: Distance | Class 4 | Going | Prize Money | Race Type: flat

Seven runners, Class 4, and it’s the kind of race where people will overthink it because the market is tight. Don’t. With this field size there’s no each-way value — it’s a straight win bet or nothing. The race revolves around three progressive types: Captain Fox (523-1) who comes here off a win and brings a big topspeed of 79; Gatehouse (21-) who’s lightly raced and clearly capable of better; and Island Bear, who’s rated 88 but we don’t have a topspeed figure in the data feed, so you’re leaning more on the handicapper than the stopwatch.

The trainer angle matters here: James Tate is a monster at Southwell (26.15% winners and 55.38% placed in our data) and he runs Sovereign View, who arrives in good nick (44231-). But on pure “who can go and win now” evidence, Captain Fox looks the one with the clearest upside and the strongest speed figure. For Southwell racing tips, this is where I want to be brave and decisive.

Top selections

WIN – Captain Fox (Jockey: Finley Marsh | Trainer: Richard Hughes | Form: 523-1 | Rating: 86 | Draw: | Weight: 136)

He’s my idea of the right favourite in the right race. Captain Fox has already shown he can finish a race properly — that last-time win caps a progressive profile — and the 79 topspeed is the best on offer in this seven-runner field. Richard Hughes also does well at Southwell in our track data (21.48% winners; 50.37% placed), which gives me confidence this has been placed with intent rather than hope. The market has him prominent and you can still grab 4/1 with Bet365, which looks generous for the horse with the standout speed figure and recent winning momentum. If he runs to that 79 again, they’re all playing for places… except there are no each-way places worth buying today. Win only.

Betting strategy

Seven runners means no each-way bet from me — keep your edge. Captain Fox is the win play at 4/1 because his topspeed is the best in the race and he’s coming here off a win. If you’re looking for dangers, Gatehouse is the “could be anything” type and Sovereign View brings James Tate’s Southwell strike-rate into the equation.

18:30 – Free Tips On attheraces.com Handicap

Race Details: Distance | Class 5 | Going | Prize Money | Race Type: flat

Now we’re talking: 12 runners, Class 5, and the kind of handicap where you can make a case for half the field… which is exactly why you shouldn’t. The market has Faithful Dream heading it at 4/1 and that’s not a bad read — he’s been knocking on the door (524253) and crucially gets in here with a light weight of 124. The interesting bit is how the prices line up with the speed figures: Explosive Finnish has a huge topspeed of 77 and is somehow a double-figure price with most firms (best 12/1 on Betfair). That’s the sort of mismatch I’m happy to attack.

Real Jack (topspeed 70) and Fanjove (66) are solid, while Queen Sana comes here in form and has Billy Loughnane booked, which will attract money. But for Southwell racing tips, I want one “right at the head of the market” and one proper value swing.

Top selections

WIN – Faithful Dream (Jockey: Jason Watson | Trainer: Michael Appleby | Form: 524253 | Rating: 76 | Draw: | Weight: 124)

Faithful Dream is the definition of an honest sort, and in these big-field Southwell handicaps that counts for plenty. He keeps running his race, he’s effective off his mark (rating 76), and the weight is a big deal: 124 is a lovely racing weight when others are lugging 134 and 135. The market has it about right at 4/1 with Bet365, but I don’t think he should be bigger than that given how consistently he’s hitting the frame. Jason Watson is a strong booking for a horse who needs delivering late, and Appleby is exactly the kind of trainer you want in these gritty all-weather handicaps. If he gets a clean passage, he’s fancied to go close and I’m happy to call him the one to beat.

EACH-WAY – Explosive Finnish (Jockey: Jack Mitchell | Trainer: Kevin Frost | Form: 543- | Rating: 74 | Draw: | Weight: 135)

Here’s the bet that makes this race worth playing. Explosive Finnish has a topspeed of 77 — that’s the best figure we see in the entire 18:30 field — yet you can still find 12/1 on Betfair. That’s value, plain and simple, because the market is pricing him like a mid-division type rather than a horse with legitimate winning speed for this grade. Jack Mitchell is a positive as well (15.36% win rate at Southwell in our data sources), and if he can sit handy rather than getting shuffled back, he’ll outrun that price more often than not. With four places on offer each-way (1/5 odds), this is the one I want carrying my stake.

Danger: Real Jack has the rating (77) and a 70 topspeed — if he gets the breaks, he’s absolutely in the shake-up.

19:00 – Sky Sports Racing Mile Series Final Handicap (CCR Mile Series Final)

Race Details: Distance | Class 2 | Going | Prize Money | Race Type: flat

Thirteen runners, Class 2 final, and you can feel the quality lift immediately. The market says Moonjid is the one to beat at around 10/3, and with a 92 rating and a 70 topspeed, that’s logical. But this is a final — it’s meant to be competitive — and the value often sits with the horses who keep running well without winning.

Tonal is interesting: he’s in cracking form (21-131) and sits near the top of the ratings at 91. Meanwhile, Signcastle City brings the standout topspeed of 82 and is available at 10/1 on Betfair, which immediately catches the eye as potentially mispriced if you believe the race will be run to suit a horse who can quicken. There are also a cluster of Ian Williams runners (Tonal, Echalar, Uniting, Law Of Design, Giant) which adds a tactical subplot, but we don’t have pace maps in the provided data, so I’m sticking to what we can prove: ratings, recent form strings, and speed figures. For Southwell racing tips, this is the race to be selective and price-sensitive.

Top selections

WIN – Tonal (Jockey: Ryan Kavanagh | Trainer: Ian Williams | Form: 21-131 | Rating: 91 | Draw: | Weight: 136)

He’s the bet I want to have, not the horse I want to admire. Tonal is coming here off a win (the final “1” in 21-131) and the profile screams thriving: three wins from his last four starts in that sequence. In a competitive final, give me the lad who knows how to get his head in front. The price is fair rather than flashy — 9/2 with Bet365 — but I’d still rather be with him than take short odds about Moonjid in a 13-runner handicap. Ryan Kavanagh has solid Southwell numbers too (16.39% wins), and that matters when you’re trying to win a race that will be decided by small margins and timing. Tonal holds strong claims and rates my clear win play.

EACH-WAY – Signcastle City (Jockey: Joe Leavy | Trainer: Richard Hannon | Form: 672154 | Rating: 92 | Draw: | Weight: 130)

This is the value angle in the big one. Signcastle City has the best topspeed in the field at 82, and in a final where plenty are closely matched on official marks, that’s a serious weapon. He’s also well treated on weight compared to the top-laden horses — 130 is manageable in a race full of hardened handicappers. The market has him at 10/1 on Betfair, which looks generous when you stack his speed figure up against rivals at half the price. Joe Leavy isn’t on the course specialists list, but Richard Hannon is never here for the scenery and this horse’s raw ability is there in black and white. With four places each-way, he’s the bet to hit the frame and could easily win if the race sets up for a late punch.

Danger: Moonjid is the obvious threat at 10/3 — highest-rated (92) and respected, even if the price is tight in a 13-runner final.

Betting strategy

This is the race for structured staking. Tonal is the win bet because the recent winning profile matters in finals, and 9/2 feels a fair exchange. Signcastle City is the each-way special at 10/1 with four places — the 82 topspeed is the best in the field and the price hasn’t caught up. If you’re worried about class, Moonjid is the obvious danger but short enough.

Summary & best bets

That’s your Southwell racing tips card in a nutshell: a couple of short-ish favourites who make sense, and two proper betting races where price and speed figures can tilt the edge your way.

NAP of the Day: Captain Fox (18:00) — seven-runner Class 4, best topspeed in the field (79) and comes here off a win. At 4/1 with Bet365 he’s the bet I’m happiest to build around.

Best Value Bet: Explosive Finnish (18:30) each-way — topspeed 77 and available at 12/1 on Betfair in a 12-runner handicap paying four places. That’s the definition of an angle.

Banker: Galileo Charm (16:55) — best of 85/40 and I can see why; top-rated, in form, and partnered by Robert Havlin who has strong Southwell numbers.

Each-Way Special: Signcastle City (19:00) — best topspeed in the final (82) and a chunky 10/1 on Betfair. In big-field finals, that’s exactly the sort of each-way swing I want taking. More Southwell racing tips tomorrow, but this set gives you a solid, disciplined set of plays today.

A: James Tate is the standout in the provided course stats with a 26.15% win rate and a massive 55.38% place rate at Southwell.

Q: Which jockey has the best Southwell strike-rate from the listed course notes?
A: From the jockeys-to-note list, Hector Crouch leads on 22.11% wins at the course.

Q: What’s the best each-way angle on the card?
A: On our numbers versus price, Explosive Finnish at 12/1 (Betfair) in the 18:30 looks strong each-way because he has the best topspeed in that field (77) and there are four places.

Q: Why do you avoid each-way bets in some races?
A: With small fields (like the 7-runner 18:00), each-way terms usually offer poor value. Our staking approach for these Southwell racing tips is win-only in smaller fields and each-way only when the place terms justify it.
